- An Intercultural trip down the Old Continent – Analyzing A Tramp Abroad by Mark TwainPublication . Silva, Luís Pedro Maia; Cerqueira, Carina Raquel OliveiraThe present thesis is based on the literary analysis of the 19th Century Intercultural Travel book A Tramp Abroad by Mark Twain. In it, I approach a particular set of topics that are associated with the multiple fields studied throughout my degree, such as the characterization of various cultures, the contextualization of said cultures at the time (in this case study, the 19th Century), the first signs of touristic traveling, intercultural concepts as the formation of stereotypes or various forms of prejudice, and the construction of cultural identities, firstly introduced by Stuart Hall. Using a structured analysis, I start my dissertation by reading and interpreting the book that will serve as a main reference: A Tramp Abroad (1880), by Mark Twain. I present a brief biography of Mark Twain, with a description of some of the author’s main personal and professional accomplishments. With that, an historical contextualization of the author and the book that leads to a much deeper and enlightening recognition of the man and writer behind one of the most remarkable intercultural works in Western literary history. I also present a detailed analysis of A Tramp Abroad, with a brief summary of all chapters, appendixes, and characters of the book. From there, I select three of the most interculturally relevant chapters. This selection allows me to reflect, interpret, and display my argumentation based on the concepts within the realm of the study of interculturality, stereotypes, prejudice, and the formation of identity – theoretical observations cemented on a myriad of authors and cientific works within this area of study. Finally, as the analysis of a travel book is exhibited, it is important to understand the concept of tourism as well as the notion of a literary text (within this thematic context). Consequently, this thesis will also contemplate the history and cultural significance of touristic travel and the definitions of literature, literary text, and language as they all reveal themselves to have a valuable contribution to the connection that is ought to be made between the real-life experiences described by Mark Twain and the main theories and study areas related to this degree.
- Analysing the modern video game industry and Assassin´s Creed Origins case analysis: Learning with video gamesPublication . Teixeira, Diogo Martins; Santos, Clara Maria Laranjeira Sarmento eWith a recent rise of the video game industry, this type of entertainment medium is ever-more present in our culture. Nowadays, it is almost impossible to look at emerging indus-tries and not consider the video game industry as one of the top contenders in the enter-tainment sector, due to its rapid growth in the last decade. This dissertation aims at provid-ing an overview of this growth and, at the same time, add important context to the indus-try, its evolution and major players. On the other hand, I will also demonstrate some com-mon representations of video games, their benefits, and their impact on modern culture. In addition to that, I provide a case analysis with a unique video game from a popular franchise (Assassin’s Creed Origins) that uses one of its game modes as a tool for educa-tion. I will also explore examples of gamification and other video games’ related benefits that could prove crucial in the near future. Furthermore, this thesis will also focus on the future of video games and how their success has launched new and exciting careers in the industry. Finally, I will address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the entertain-ment sector, and more precisely on the video game industry.
- Analysis and promotion of the touristic and cultural heritage of Vila CaizPublication . Couto, Sónia Cristina Ribeiro; Santos, Clara Maria Laranjeira Sarmento eThe initial theme was chosen due to the lack of visibility and touristic attractions in Vila Caiz. There is a lack of investment in the area at the touristic level, which, along with the fact that the region has agriculture as their primary sector, leads people to look for other places to live, whether elsewhere in the country or even abroad. This study aims to raise awareness about the touristic and cultural potential of villages in the north of Portugal. We chose to define Vila Caiz as the area to be studied, a village that is part of the municipality of Amarante, in the Tâmega and Vale do Sousa sub-regions of the North of Portugal. This thesis mentions multiple definitions of tourism and the evolution it has had in recent years. It also identifies the impact that some transformations have had on this subject, such as the industrial revolution and globalization. After defining some crucial points in the history of tourism, different types of tourism such as Rural Tourism, Holiday Rentals, Experiential Tourism, Religious Tourism and Cultural Tourism are mentioned. After choosing the area in which we intend to develop a more in-depth study, its main characteristics are explained, taking into account the types of tourism mentioned throughout the literary review. Consequently, the projects developed that may solve the problem initially highlighted are presented. These proposals were structured according to an in-depth study of what already exists in terms of touristic offer in areas with similar characteristics or in nearby areas that have invested more in this sector. It is possible to conclude that, with some investment by government entities, parish councils and other private entities, strategies can be built and developed. Those strategies would help in the cultural and touristic visibility of Vila Caiz among national and international audiences, and they would also increase the levels of tourism that can bring profits for the local economy and for the investors themselves.

- Architecture, built environment and culturePublication . Kildir, Dilge Erdener; Pascoal, Sara Maria Cerqueira da SilvaThis dissertation is aspired to analyse the interrelationship between architecture and culture briefly. As a starting point, the following questions are asked: “What is the interrelationship between architecture and culture?” and “How does architecture/built environment affect culture and vice versa?” The first chapter starts by explaining the multicultural and multidisciplinary state of architectural theory and practice. Then, the relation among architecture, built environment and culture is expanded with the help of a framework of theoretical ideas. In this respect, the theory of Environment-Behavior Studies (EBS) is introduced. In the second chapter, the EBS, its nature and its interrelationship with some other related theories such as Architectural Phenomenology and Space Syntax are mentioned. The evolution of EBS and its depiction are described. The definition and the practical usage of culture is also explained within this context by providing solid examples from past and present built environments. In the third chapter, explanations regarding culturally responsive environments are made, and the built forms are classified by contemplating Vernacular Architecture Studies (VAS). The evolution of these studies, how they emerged as a reaction towards the Modernist Movement’s deterministic approach, and the outcomes of these movements are elaborated. In this sense, gated community housing estates, mass housing projects and squatter settlements of Istanbul are handled as examples. In the fourth and last chapter, three landmark images which represent the cultural shifts in the modern built environment are chosen and explained, while aiming to demonstrate a link of all the topics that have been handled in the study.
- Artificial aesthetic: exploring the convergence of creativity, artificial intelligence, and human expression in artPublication .
- Backpacking culture: digital nomads in Porto - a Selina case studyPublication . Barroso, Catarina Fernandes; Silva, Manuel Fernando Moreira daThis report incorporates the curricular internship of the Master’s degree in Intercultural Studies for Business, from Porto Accounting and Business School. The internship was performed at Selina Porto, an international company originally from Panama. As globalization provides a more efficient path to mobility meanwhile facilitating the search for information, the urge to travel and seek new cultures became intense. People from around the world engaged in the act of traveling more deeply than what was known previously. The backpacker phenomenon evolved into a lifestyle, as being a tourist simply was not fulfilling for this new generation of travelers. This type of culture also leads to the transformation of organizational culture. As digital transformation takes over due to a market in need of change and innovation, the work regulation adapts itself to flexible schedules and remote work. In this specific case, the hotel chain Selina faced the need of adapting their business in order to respond to the new demand, assuming a new role. The purpose of this report is to present and analyze my internship at Selina, as an example of creativity and innovation in the hospitality business. This company targets backpackers and digital nomads, creating a market strategy suitable not only for them but locals as well, by enhancing national cultures. A study, based on qualitative research, was conducted by analyzing solo travelers’ reviews on Booking – a reservation platform –, in order to better perceive what attracts this particular cluster of travelers and the vision conveyed by the company. Features such as location, staff and environment are decidedly the most attractive. It is also proposed to depict in full detail the tasks and functions carried out throughout the internship, alluding to the evolution experienced, as well as the challenges and difficulties encountered due to Covid-19.

- Casa quântica de cultura-project and business planPublication .
- Case study: how to create a more sustainable culture at Colunex: project workPublication .
