- Designing a virtual exhibition for a Google Arts&Culture: public art, technology and intercultural communicationPublication . Costa, Hugo Miguel Moreira dos Reis; Pascoal, Sara Maria Cerqueira da SilvaO presente relatório de estágio tem como objetivo descrever o trabalho desenvolvido no estágio realizado no Centro de Estudos Interculturais relativo à recolha, tratamento e implementação de material de investigação no âmbito do projeto interdisciplinar, desenvolvido no Mestrado em Estudos Interculturais para Negócios. Este projeto relaciona-se com o processo de curadoria da exposição virtual do Museu Internacional de Escultura Contemporânea de Santo Tirso, através do contacto direto com a plataforma Google Arts&Culture. Num primeiro momento, a instituição onde o estágio foi realizado é introduzida, seguindo-se uma análise minuciosa do estudo das exposições virtuais, efetuada através da revisão de literatura. Num segundo momento, o projeto interdisciplinar, a plataforma Google Arts&Culture e o Museu Internacional de Escultura Contemporânea de Santo Tirso são cuidadosamente caracterizados. O segmento mais importante do relatório baseia-se na descrição da metodologia de trabalho em que consistiu o estágio no Centro de Estudos Interculturais. O relatório é concluído com uma análise dos resultados obtidos e propostas cruciais de melhoria relacionadas com o projeto.
- Difficulties in learning western and oriental languages: a comparative approach to learning german and mandarin chinesePublication . Mechsheryakova, Alexandra; Santos, Clara Maria Laranjeira Sarmento eThe following internship report aims to analyse and compare the learning difficulties underlying western and oriental languages. In this case, the first group of languages is represented by German, whereas the second group is represented by Mandarin Chinese. Regarding the report structure, it is organized in six parts. Firstly, in the introduction section, a brief contextualization of the research topic is made and the research method-ologies are defined. Secondly, in the second chapter, some general theoretical back-ground on foreign language learning, the general difficulties related to it and the role of the language teacher are given. After that, in the third chapter, a detailed characteriza-tion of the studied languages is made. Finished the theoretical part, in the fourth chapter, all the practical work performed during the internship as a language teacher is described. Further, in the fifth chapter, the results concerning the learning difficulties are presented. As last part, in the conclusion section, a summing up of the main ideas and findings is made.
- English as a communication tool in a global world: the case of Wall Street EnglishPublication . Fernandes, Diana da Soledade Vieitas Pinto; Albuquerque, Alexandra Marina Nunes deA globalização é um processo que dura há seculos e tem modificado as dinâmicas do mundo em relação a, por exemplo, negócios, pessoas e culturas. O seu impacto tem tido consequências como a expansão internacional das empresas, os fluxos elevados de migração e o incremento da cooperação mundial. Estes exemplos promovem encontros interculturais, particularmente em empresas multinacionais, que agora procuram potenciais colaboradores para lá das fronteiras de países, o que pode criar dilemas, especialmente devido a barreiras linguísticas e culturais. Contudo, o uso da língua inglesa como uma ferramenta de comunicação intercultural tem sido uma solução amplamente usada, sendo, por muitos, considerada uma “língua global” (Crystal, D. 2003) – uma língua que tem um status não-oficial a nível internacional e que é favorável em contraste com outras línguas quando barreiras de comunicação precisam de uma solução. A necessidade de aprender Inglês tem, também por isso, vindo a crescer, sobretudo através de escolas e cursos de formação. Wall Street English, criada nos anos setenta do século XX, é uma das empresas que contribui para o crescimento do número de falantes do inglês, em Portugal e no mundo, daí ter sido escolhida como a empresa de acolhimento do meu estágio curricular. Este relatório dará, por isso, enfoque às atividades por mim desenvolvidas durante os seis meses de estágio na Wall Street English, ao perfil da organização e à importância da língua inglesa na sociedade global.
- Erasmus+ VET projects: interculturaal communication and language strategies as a management toolPublication . Barros, Sara Catarina Oliveira; Albuquerque, Alexandra Marina Nunes deO objetivo para este relatório de estágio é estudar e explorar o tema da Comunicação Intercultural e da importância da língua, através da minha experiência de estágio na empresa Arts & Skills. É verdadeiramente importante entender que vivemos num mundo interligado, onde a comunicação intercultural desempenha um papel fundamental. O programa europeu Erasmus+ é conhecido por apoiar a mobilidade de alunos por toda a Europa e por permitir que os seus participantes experienciem ambientes interculturais, e assim, adquirir competências interculturais. No entanto, existem alguns desafios que os participantes Erasmus+ enfrentam durante a experiência de mobilidade. A língua é um deles. Ela está no centro das interações sociais e pode ser um obstáculo para uma comunicação efetiva. Há momentos em que este obstáculo é ultrapassado recorrendo ao uso correto de estratégias linguísticas, e há momentos em que os desafios são um pouco mais difíceis de ultrapassar. Para que seja possível apresentar o estágio desenvolvido na Arts & Skills e explorar como é que a língua e a cultura afetam a comunicação, este relatório de estágio encontra-se dividido em quatro capítulos. O primeiro capítulo apresenta o programa educacional europeu Erasmus+. O segundo capítulo discute a comunicação em ambientes internacionais. O terceiro capítulo apresenta a entidade acolhedora, Arts & Skills, e também as principais atividades desenvolvidas durante o meu estágio. Finalmente, o quarto capítulo analisa os momentos relevantes do estágio sob uma perspetiva intercultural.
- Working in an Intercultural Environment: experience at the Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences Internacional Office´sPublication . Vieira, Vera Cristina Maia da Silva; Furtado, Marco António Cerqueira MendesThis report is part of the curricular internship of the Master’s degree in Intercultural Studies for Business, from the Porto Accounting and Business School (Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração do Porto). This internship was carried out at the International Office of the Hochschule Aschaffenburg University, more specifically at the Incoming Coordination Unit. Nowadays, as a consequence of globalization, there is an interpenetration in the various aspects of reality, that higher education also belongs. In fact, higher education institutions around the world are increasingly intensifying co-operation. So there is an intensification of the internationalization of higher education and of the mobility of students and academic and non-academic staff that conducts to the allocation of ideas, cultures, identities, and skills generate entrepreneurship, innovation and competitiveness. The purpose of this report is to reflect on the internationalization of German higher education, especially at the University of the internship, as well as entrepreneurship in higher education. It is also intended to describe, in an exhaustive way, all the functions and activities carried out, as well as the processes and conclusions of the personal projects carried out during the internship.
- The integration rituals of mobility students in Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of PortoPublication . Intercultural encounters are a reality to the world, and the rise of outside countries experiences have almost become a must have. The competitive world demands that people are acquaintance with others’ reality –that is, different cultural backgrounds. To have an insight on others’ cultural reality can be an advantage. Nowadays, this experience is lived mainly by college students. It is due to this demand that mobility programmes are created. In this context, higher institutions have internationalized to follow the globalized world needs. However, an open world with more prepared and openminded people, does not stop the culture shock when confronted with other reality, which means it is crucial to have an adaption and integration process. It happens especially in student mobility context, where young people have a short period of time to have a full experience and live the whole process. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Porto was founded in 1919, and is nowadays University of Porto’s institution which receives more foreign people per year. Therefore, there is the need to develop its reception and integration process to compete with the number of people that arrive each year. In this internship report, we shall focus on the globalization and internationalization, the mobility programmes and its emergence, and the activities planned for the academic year 2018/2019.
- Demystifying Saudi Arabia: is western fashion changing Middle East´s most segregated country? How to approach it in business terms?Publication . Gonçalves, Tiago André Duarte Ferreira; Pascoal, Sara Maria Cerqueira da SilvaO objetivo desta dissertação é por um lado perceber se a moda do ocidente está a mudar o país mais segregado do Médio Oriente – Arábia Saudia, e por outro analisar as particularidades desta cultura em termos de business approach. Para se conseguir corroborar ou refutar a hipótese em causa foi feita toda uma investigação em termos de comunicação intercultural, comunicação não verbal, a moda e a sua origem bem como o mundo Árabe e o seu background cultural, considerando o caso específico da Arábia Saudita, para desta forma se poder inferir acerca da premissa. A dissertação culmina com um estudo empírico sob a forma de entrevistas que contribuem precisamente para testar a hipótese em causa.

Araújo, Goreti Margarida dos Santos; Pascoal, Sara Maria Cerqueira da SilvaO trabalho que se apresenta procura estabelecer relação entre o que é preconizado como uma Pessoa interculturalmente eficaz e como isso pode ser potenciado no âmbito dos negócios. Para esse fim, o Capítulo I introduz termos relacionados com eficácia intercultural e expressa as razões por que há uma necessidade crescente de pessoas cientes da eficácia intercultural. Em seguida, no Capítulo II, algumas ferramentas relacionadas com agilidade e seus respetivos valores utilizados nos negócios são apresentados, e que são Agile, Sociocracy, Beyond Budgeting e Open Space, bem como uma teoria sincrética - BOSSA - que juntos podem apoiar a prestação de Pessoas interculturalmente eficazes num ambiente de negócios. Para terminar, no Capítulo III a Ficção Científica é trazida à colação como possível campo de teste para a eficácia da agilidade em potenciar a interculturalidade nos negócios. Aqui a Star Trek Voyager é apresentada como um possível ambiente movido pela agilidade.
- Filling the gap - um projeto social de graffiti e street art no Grande PortoPublication . Silva, Maria Luísa Pinto da Fonseca; Pascoal, Sara Maria Cerqueira da SilvaO graffiti e a street art tornaram-se num fenómeno urbano universal, intercultural e multidisciplinar. O contributo da investigação científica aumentou consideravelmente o conhecimento desta cultura que, por sua vez, transformou a forma como vemos e participamos social e culturalmente a cidade. O objetivo geral desta tese é a criação de um projeto de empreendedorismo social, utilizando a cultura do graffiti e da street art como recurso agregador para a inclusão social, identidade local e empoderamento das comunidades. Para cumprir este propósito, realizou-se uma breve síntese da literatura existente sobre a cultura do graffiti e da street art, contudo significativa, para a perceção da sua evolução e envolvimento nos vários setores da sociedade contemporânea. Procedeu-se também à identificação de um conjunto de bens materiais e imateriais interligados na criação de sinergias culturais, tanto para benefício das populações locais como na atração de turistas, evidenciando-se como contributos relevantes para o desenvolvimento socioeconómico das comunidades. Por fim, a delimitação territorial da Área Metropolitana do Porto e correspondentes análises macro e micro ambientais, estabelecem as orientações para a implementação de um projeto empreendedor nas atividades culturais e criativas.
- Refugee integration policies, gender issues & traumaPublication . Figueiredo, Mariana Camelo; Veloso, Maria Manuela RibeiroThe recent influx of refugees has brought new adversities for countries which seek to grant asylum for displaced families. Policy makers and societies suddenly realize the challenges that urban systems face in integrating the sudden influx of newcomers. This dissertation provides an understanding of the role that states and societies play in the process of social integration of newcomers, using the context of Germany’s recent host of a large influx of refugee newcomers and subsequent integration policies mostly in the educational systems. This dissertation’s focal areas of study will be integration and refugee migrations as well as matters of gender and sexual orientation within the barriers of integration and the influence of trauma in performance and general well-being. I will provide context on the relevance in today’s political and social environment that understanding migration processes and what they bring to a society represents, I will contextualize as well the coming of mass migrations to Europe and the middle eastern conflicts that lead up to it. This research will include interviews with integration agents such as an education ministry member and professors and refugee students as well as community members which will allow me to reach meaningful conclusions towards policies and its real-life impacts. This dissertation brings together different data sources to describe the current characteristics of refugee integration; mostly in the educational system in Germany in the hope of informing future decision-making and policy formulation and provide awareness towards the importance and long-term range that integration measures carry.
