- The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in social workers’ quality of life—A study casePublication . Azevedo, Rui; Moreto, Joana; Sá, Maria ManuelQuality of life is associated with physical health, psychological state, level of independence, social relationships, personal beliefs and their relationship to salient features of their environment, reporting to a subjective evaluation, embedded in a cultural, social, environmental and professional context. On the other hand, some authors argue that people’s quality of life depends on their access to certain social and economic goods and services that naturally vary depending on the culture the subjects are inserted in. The pandemic brought about nefarious consequences to people’s routines and their quality of life. Some companies stopped or reduced production, and adopted telework, facing the governmental measures that emerged to tackle the pandemic. However, most IPSSs (Private Social Solidarity Institutions) kept with their work, which lead to physical and emotional burnout. This study aims to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the quality of life of IPSS workers, using the WHOQOL-BREF scale. We have found that workers hold a “reasonable” perception both of their quality of life and the state of their health. The physical, social and environmental domains, which were defined as facets of quality of life, were rated between “reasonable” and “good”. The psychological domain was rated the lowest, with a “reasonable” rate. We were able to establish a negative correlation between two domains (physical and environmental) and age. Conversely, level of education was positively correlated with the physical, psychological and environmental domains.
- Optimization of an HPLC-DAD method for Quercetin detectionPublication . Carvalho, Daniel; Moreira, Fernando; Oliveira, Ana IsabelHigh-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is one of the most used liquid chromatographic techniques owing to its versatility that allows an optimal resolution. Quercetin (QUE), a polyphenol, has received increasing attention due to its antioxidant properties. Efforts have been made to overcome the traditional poor oral bioavailability of quercetin, requiring the development of analytical techniques for quercetin detection in different matrices. The main objective of this work was the optimization of a HPLC-Diode Array Detector (DAD) method for quercetin. An optimization process was conducted to guarantee the best conditions and results. Detection and quantification were executed with a reverse phase C-18 column. Different mobile phase (MP) compositions, flow rates, and wavelengths (with DAD) were studied. Better results were achieved with a MP composition of water:acetonitrile:methanol (55:40:5), with 1.5% acetic acid at a 1.3 mL/minute flow rate, with good results regarding chromatogram resolution, and quercetin quantification and detection.
- Adverse reactions mediated by Strontium-89, Samarium-153, Rhenium-186 and Rhenium-188: A Systematic Review of LiteraturePublication . Pinho, Cláudia; Martins, Sara; Jesus, Ângelo; Suárez, Ana MartínOne of the therapies used for the palliative treatment of pain associated with bone metastases is radiopharmaceutical therapy. Radiopharmaceuticals can cause adverse reactions, and, therefore, the aim is to systematize the results and conclusions of studies on the use of the radiopharmaceuticals 89Sr, 153Sm, 186Re and 188Re in the palliative treatment of pain associated with bone metastases. A systematic literature review was conducted according to PRISMA statement, using the databases MEDLINE and EBSCO. After the selection process, 20 articles were included. The studies showed that the 4 radiopharmaceuticals analysed presented very similar results regarding pain relief after treatment, decrease in analgesic consumption, side effects at the time of administration, hematologic toxicity and disease progression after treatment. Concluding, the use of radiopharmaceuticals for pain palliation seems to be safe and an alternative to existing treatments.
- PML/ RARA variants and their role in Arsenic Trioxide resistance in APL: a scoping reviewPublication . Gonçalves, Patrícia; Santos, Claúdia dos; Sousa, Maria; Mota, SandraCurrently, the treatment of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) is grounded on therapeutic regimens based on arsenic trioxide (ATO). However, mutations in the PML component of the PML/RARA oncoprotein are believed to be involved in the mechanism of resistance to this agent. We performed a scoping review to understand the role of variant PML/RARA fusion proteins in the mechanism of resistance in APL. Applying the defined criteria, we selected 10 studies, in which patients presented a picture of relapse and/or resistance after the administration of ATO, having been identified at least one PML mutation. We also reported that RARA is the most frequently mutated gene, although we also found mutations in genes related to other processes involved in cell differentiation. Briefly, this is a multifactorial mechanism and PML/RARA variants are important but not an obligatory condition for ATO resistance to occur.
- Semi-quantitative methods for assessing the risk of occupational accidents: A literature reviewPublication . Noronha, Ana R.; Costa, Sónia L.; Ferreira, Adriana S.; Faria, Brígida Mónica; Vieira da Silva, Manuela; Rodrigues, MatildeThis study reviewed the existing literature on the application of semi-quantitative methods to assess the risk of occupational accidents. The main goal was to identify and describe the methods used in practical applications. PRISMA methodology was applied in this systematic literature review. Scientific articles were searched in Science Direct, PubMed and B-on (from 2010 until March 2022). After defining and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 3 articles were analyzed. It should be noted the limited availability of articles that describe the application of semi-quantitative methods to assess the risk of occupational accidents. Given its advantages in decision-making about risk acceptance and the need of control measures, we highlight the importance of future developments of these methods and the need to expand their practical applicability.
- Cyanobacteria in cosmetics: a natural alternative for anti-aging ingredientsPublication . Morone, Janaína; Lopes, Graciliana; Oliveira, Beatriz; Vasconcelos, Vítor; Martins, RosarioBeing exposed to endogenous and exogenous stressors, and being the body’s external defense line, skin protection is of pivotal importance, in order to maintain morphological and physiologic integrity and health. Fostering by individual psychological comfort, esthetic performance, and young appearance, along with motivation for natural products with less side effects and sustainable production, consumer’s demands drive the cosmetic industry into the relentless pursuit for innovation. In this context, cyanobacteria enforce as a promising source of ingredients with cosmetic potential. With the ability to withstand adverse conditions for survival, the adaptation to extreme environments is reflected in the production of compounds with moisturizing, photoprotective, antioxidant, and whitening potential, all attributes required in cosmetics, namely in anti-aging products. In this chapter, we will focus on the interconnection between cyanobacteria and skin, by presenting the main applications of these organisms in skincare products.
- Students’ perception of self-efficacy and academic engagement in School of Health of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto: an observational studyPublication . Amorim, Manuela; Tavares, Diana; Lamas, MC; Mota, Sandra; Salgado, Ana IsabelThe intense increase in students in Higher Education, observed in recent decades, has promoted profound changes quantitative and qualitative in demand, frequency, and student profile. In the context of these changes, we conducted a study to evaluate the self-efficacy and academic engagement of students using an online questionnaire. It includes some sociodemographic variables and the Self-Efficacy Scale in Higher Education (AEFS) and University Student Engagement Inventory (USEI). It was possible to verify that students had a score for academic engagement above the average, revealing an overall high level of academic engagement, an indicator of student success. Regarding self-efficacy, the score obtained is above 4 (on a scale of 1 to 5), close to 5, in social interaction, which indicates that these students overall have relatively robust self-efficacy beliefs. In all cases, the low values of standard deviation reveal a good degree of agreement between responses.
