- Replication management in reliable real-time systemsPublication . Pinho, Luís Miguel; Vasques, Francisco; Wellings, AndyBuilding reliable real-time applications on top of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components is not a straightforward task. Thus, it is essential to provide a simple and transparent programming model, in order to abstract programmers from the low-level implementation details of distribution and replication. However, the recent trend for incorporating pre-emptive multitasking applications in reliable real-time systems inherently increases its complexity. It is therefore important to provide a transparent programming model, enabling pre-emptive multitasking applications to be implemented without resorting to simultaneously dealing with both system requirements and distribution and replication issues. The distributed embedded architecture using COTS components (DEAR-COTS) architecture has been previously proposed as an architecture to support real-time and reliable distributed computer-controlled systems (DCCS) using COTS components. Within the DEAR-COTS architecture, the hard real-time subsystem provides a framework for the development of reliable real-time applications, which are the core of DCCS applications. This paper presents the proposed framework, and demonstrates how it can be used to support the transparent replication of software components.
- Analysis of Systems with Backlash and Impacts through the Describing FunctionPublication . Barbosa, Ramiro S.; Machado, J. A. TenreiroThis paper analyses the dynamical properties of systems with backlash and impact phenomena based on the describing function method. The dynamics is illustrated using the Nyquist and Bode plots and the results are compared with those of standard models.
- The Greatest lover: a post-colonial rewriting of My Fair LadyPublication . Chen, ChapmenINTRODUCTION The popular Hong Kong comedy, The Greatest Lover, re-incarnates one of the most popular western musicals, My Fair Lady. OBJECTIVES 1. To find out in what major ways My Fair Lady was rewritten as the Hong Kong Cantonese movie, Gungzi Docing (The Greatest Lover). 2. To find out the socio-political, socio-linguistic, and gender ideology behind the rewriting. METHODOLOGY 1. To note the similarity of the themes for both works – a creator falling in love with his/her creation, and class prejudice and cross-class romance. 2. To note how the times of The Greatest Lover differ from that of My Fair Lady. 3. To note how the main characters in The Greatest Lover differ from My Fair Lady in terms of profession, gender, etc. 4. To note how the plot of The Greatest Lover differs from that of My Fair Lady. 5. To note how focus on language in The Greatest Lover compares with that in My Fair Lady. 6. To discuss the ideological implications of the differences noted above, e.g. women in Hong Kong today have much higher status than women in Victorian England; the conflict between local Hong Kong people and both legal and illegal immigrants from Mainland China is even more serious than that between the British upper middle class and the lower class during the Victorian period. 7. Andre Lefevere (1992) argues that translation and adaptation are rewriting informed and influenced by the rewriter’s ideology, among other things. 8. Both Aline Remael (1995) and Patrick Cattrysse (1992) think that film adaptation is a kind of translation. 9. Sirkkus Aaltonen (2000) argues that drama translation mirrors the ideologies of the target society. CONCLUSION 1. The Greatest Lover projects local cultural significance onto My Fair Lady by helping us to appreciate an important Western work of art through the Hong Kong Cantonese perspective. 2. Broader issues in translation and intercultural studies are also considered.
- Music education in context: the construction of the teacher's identity within cross-disciplinary collaboration in the artsPublication . Mota, Maria; Costa, Jorge Alexandre; Leite, A.This study was part of a research project that examined innovative practices in a primary school with an integrated arts curriculum. While the school started an expansion of its curriculum, a music teacher was hired to become part of the arts learning area. Her commitment to the overall project determines that she works in collaboration with the other arts teachers, namely, Visual Arts and Drama. Baring in mind a theoretical background that traces the lines of a liberating, autonomy promoting, and collaborative education, the development of the identity process of the music teacher was analyzed through her diary, fi eld notes, and other observational data, gathered by the research team. Findings indicate that, while signifi cant gains were brought about by crossdisciplinary collaboration, some problems remain to solve, concerning the role of specifi c musical skills development. The implications for music education research are suggested, with reference to the relationship between music skills development and integrated art projects.

- New Concepts Towards the Synthesis of Digital Circuits Through Genetic AlgorithmsPublication . Reis, Cecília; Machado, J. A. Tenreiro; Cunha, J. BoaventuraThis paper analyses the performance of a Genetic Algorithm using two new concepts, namely a static fitness function including a discontinuity measure and a fractional-order dynamic fitness function, for the synthesis of combinational logic circuits. In both cases, experiments reveal superior results in terms of speed and convergence to achieve a solution.
- Communication protocol for the rempli projectPublication . Porneală, Cătălina; Alves, MárioThe overall goal of the REMPLI project is to design and implement a communication infrastructure for distributed data acquisition and remote control operations using the power grid as the communication medium. The primary target application is remote meter reading with high time resolution, where the meters can be energy, heat, gas, or water meters. The users of the system (e.g. utility companies) will benefit from the REMPLI system by gaining more detailed information about how energy is consumed by the end-users. In this context, the power-line communication (PLC) is deployed to cover the distance between utility company’s Private Network and the end user. This document specifies a protocol for real-time PLC, in the framework of the REMPLI project. It mainly comprises the Network Layer and Data Link Layer. The protocol was designed having into consideration the specific aspects of the network: different network typologies (star, tree, ring, multiple paths), dynamic changes in network topology (due to network maintenance, hazards, etc.), communication lines strongly affected by noise.
