The CIIMAR@E2S laboratories result from the integration of P.PORTO as an associate member of the Interdisciplinary Center of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR). This integration has been progressively consolidated at E2S through the long-standing involvement of integrated CIIMAR researchers. The creation of the CIIMAR@E2S laboratories has strengthened collaboration between the institutions and enhanced research capacity in the areas of blue biotechnology, health, environment and sustainability. The research carried out focuses mainly on the development of functional, innovative, safe and sustainable solutions, with applications in the fields of health and the environment. In the area of biotechnology applied to health, research focuses on the discovery of natural compounds with potential applications in neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, as well as on the development of natural alternatives for dermocosmetics and nutraceuticals. In the field of environmental sustainability, research is centered on the prospecting of pigments derived from microorganisms with potential industrial applications, as well as on the valorisation of textile and agri-food waste, promoting approaches aligned with the principles of the circular economy.
