- Affective, normative and continuance organizational commitment scales validation to the portuguese industrial workers populationPublication . Martins, Helena; Rebelo, Teresa; Tomás, InêsThe Affective, Normative and Continuance Organizational Commitment Scales are meant to evaluate the commitment of individuals towards the organization they work for. Although they can be used in any organizational context, this study focuses on workers from industrial enterprises.
- Analysis of oscillatory brain activity in gamers and non-gamers during different cognitive tasksPublication . Duarte, Vinicius; Dores, Artemisa Rocha; Tavares, DianaSome studies suggest that the pathological use of video games is related to high impulsivity and risky decision making. To analyze the EEG activity of compulsive gamers and non-gamers, while performing one inhibitory control and a decision-making task.
- Assessing coping, emotional regulation, and psychosocial perceptions of academic stress in undergraduatesPublication . Teixeira, Ricardo J.; Dores, Artemisa Rocha; Barreto, João Francisco; Sucena, Ana; Martins, Helena; Magalhães, AndreiaLiterature suggests most college students appear to lack the knowledge and skills to effectively cope with stressful academic experiences (Gall, Evans, & Bellrose, 2000). Ineffective coping strategies may increase students’ health problems, demand for health services, and attrition rates (Morrison & O’Connor, 2005). This study aims to examine the associations, and processes between psychosocial variables deemed important in academic transitions.
- Constructing and validating a scale of employee satisfaction with HRM practices in the healthcare contextPublication . Martins, Helena; Proença, TeresaThe concept of HRM perceptions is a growing interest in the literature, as one of the antecedents of HRM outcomes. Regardless, not only the cognitive aspect of perception is interesting in this field (what you think) but also the affective perspective is of interest (how you feel about it). In this study we propose a scale for assessing satisfaction with the perceptions of the HRM practices. A 24 item Likert-type scale was developed considering literature review, to assess subjects’ satisfaction with Human Resources Practices in a healthcare setting. Talked reflections were held and a survey encompassing all workers from a Hospital was conducted later, with a sample of 922 subjects. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis were performed; reliability was tested using Cronbach’s alpha. The scale presents good psychometric properties with alpha values that range from .71 to .91. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis demonstrated that the scale presents a very good fit with CFI= 0.94, AGFI= 0.88, and RMSEA= 0.07. The present study represents a first approach in the usage of this scale and despite having a large sample, respondents originate from a single institution. This study presents a pertinent scale towards measuring a seldom explored construct of the worker-organization relationship. The scale is parsimonious and results are promising. There seems to be very little research on how subjects feel about the HRM practices. This construct, very much in line with more recent studies concerning worker perceptions can be especially interesting in the context of the worker-organization relationship.
- Consumption of sweetened beverage in children and its relation with metabolic syndrome: needs assessment and health educationPublication . Teixeira, D.; Cunha, S.; Vieira, Mónica; Dores, Artemisa Rocha; Prudêncio, CristinaThe intake of sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) has been associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and dental caries. Thus, an increased consumption of SSB may potentiate metabolic syndrome (MS). The consumption of SSB has increased amongst children. The promotion of health education at parents/ tutors level may lead to a decrease in SSB intake by children, with an improvement in their quality of life in medium-long term and, consequently, diminished costs for public health.
- Cultural Intelligence (CQ) in Erasmus Mundus Students and Alumni: an exploratory study on the levels and antecedents of CQPublication . Martins, Helena; Lukic, Dane; Yarosh, Maria; Solari, MelinaErasmus Mundus Masters (EMM) are programs with a strong component of interculturality. Our study aimed at understanding the level of cultural intelligence (CQ) of EMM students and alumni, as well as some of the characteristics associated with higher levels of CQ. The study included 626 EMM students and alumni from 109 different countries that encompasses 6 continents. Ang and Van Dyne’s (2006) cultural intelligence scale was used; closed and open ended questions were used to describe the sample’s sociodemographic characteristics and experiences regarding interculturality. After validating and assessing the scale’s psychometric properties, relations between different variables were explored using Pearson’s correlation, ANOVA, t Tests, and GLM procedures. We then analysed the open ended responses to gain further insight on our results. Differences among respondents are mainly equated with international experience rather than nationality or training. Respondents’ open ended replies provided us with a deeper insight on why training seems to be so ineffective in developing CQ. This is a transversal study that uses self-reporting measures; also, questionnaires were conducted in English, which was not the mother tongue of most of the respondents. This work is consistent with the CQ literature, however we argue that training mentioned by respondents systematically fails to meet some of literature’s foremost conditions for effective CQ trainings and provide clues for the implementation of more successful initiatives. With an exceptionally diverse sample, this study contributes towards the understanding of mechanisms of developing CQ among EMM and international Students. Results can be useful for selection processes, training/development of CQ and reducing dropout/turnover.
- Cultural intelligence scale: validation in a multicultural setting of erasmus mundus students and alumniPublication . Martins, Helena; Yarosh, Maria; Lukic, DaneThis work aims at further developing and testing the psychometric properties of the Cultural Intelligence Scale (Ang & Van Dyne, 2006) in an Erasmus Mundus Students and Alumni Population, including reliability. The study included 626 participants from 109 different countries that emcompasses 6 continents. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis procedures were carried out in order to test the scale in a multicultural scale of Erasmus Mundus Students. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach Alpha. The scale presents excellent psychometric properties with alpha values that range from .84 to .90. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses demonstrated that the original model of the scale presents an exceptionally good fit. The present study was conducted using a convenience sample and online questionnaires that limit its conclusions when we consider the globality of the Erasmus Mundus Students. Research/Practical Implications: This study presents evidence that Ang and Van Dyne’s scale is an adequate measure instrument to assess intercultural intelligence in a multicultural setting of students and alumni. Multicultural samples and studies are becoming more and more present and relevant; the study of intercultural competences and habilities is becoming increasingly important, and in this task, solid psychometric instruments are of paramount importance. This study presents evidence that Ang and Van Dyne’s (2006) scale is a fairly recent and parsimonious instrument with excellent psychometric properties properties.
