- Activation timings of the scapular stabilizers in subjects with a stroke affecting the right versus left hemispheresPublication . Ferreira, S.; Silva, Cláudia; Silva, A.; Carvalho, Paulo; Santos, RubimLesions affecting the right hemisphere influence the ability to plan the virtual reaching trajectory and, consequently the postural control. On the other hand, left hemisphere lesions affect the ability to select the adequate motor program to reach the target. This study aimed to explore the existence of differences at the activation timings and sequence of activation of the scapular stabilizers, mainly the serratus anterior, superior, middle and inferior trapezius fibers, in relation to the anterior deltoid, in subjects with a stroke affecting the right versus left hemispheres, during reaching. Besides, it aimed to establish comparisons between both sides of each subject and a group of subjects without of each subject and a group of subjects without pathology.
- Adiposity indicators and cardiovascular risk factors in Azorean adolescentsPublication . Moreira, C.; Santos, R.; Vale, S.; Santos, Paula Clara; Marques, A.; Abreu, S.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Mota, J.This study was conducted to evaluate the association of adiposity indicators (body mass index, waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio) with cardiovascular risk factors in lean andobese Azorean adolescents.
- Ankle behaviour during sitting to standing sequence in premature infantsPublication . Machado, Sónia; Moreira, Ana; Silva, Cláudia; Araújo, Daniela; Santos, RubimPremature infants often presents a different CNS structure and maturity, that frequently has influence on postural control (PC), and prematurity is also a risk factor for spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP). The movement sequence from sitting to standing (STS), being one of motor learning tasks that requires PC at the level of the ankle, seems to be a functional task often compromised in premature infants with and without CP.
- Antagonist coativation in stroke vs healthy subjects during sit-to-standPublication . Silva, Augusta; Sousa, Andreia S. P.; Silva, Cláudia; Santos, Rubim; Tavares, João Manuel R. S.; Calheno, Teresa; Sousa, FilipaHigh levels og antagonista coativation is frequently found in post stroke subjects, related with postural control impairments. The bilateral postural control dysfunction expected in post-stroke subjects is due to the bilateral disposal of reticulospinal system.
- Association between milk intake, leisure-time physical activity and abdominal obesity in girls 2012Publication . Abreu, Sandra; Santos, Rute; Moreira, Carla; Santos, Paula Clara; Vale, Susana; Soares-Miranda, Luísa; Mota, Jorge; Moreira, PedroDiet and physical activity are recognized as important factors to prevent abdominal obesity (AO), which is strongly associated with chronic disease (type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, etc.).
- Body fatness, cardiorespiratory fitness and inflammatory markers In adolescentsPublication . Moreira, Carla; Abreu, Sandra; Santos, Paula C.; Lopes, LuísThe alarming increase in obesity worldwide and the decrease in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels among adolescents are of concern in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between body fatness, CRF, and inflammatory markers [C-reactive protein (C-RP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and leptin] in a sample of Portuguese adolescents. We assessed the hypothesis that adolescents with higher body fatness and lower CRF levels will have an increased level of inflammatory markers. A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted on 529 Portuguese adolescents (268 girls) aged 12-18 years (mean age 14.3±1.7). Body fatness (BF) was assessed using the Bioelectric Impedance Analysis. Intravenous blood samples were taken after an overnight fast to determine inflammatory markers (C-RP, IL-6, TNF-α, and leptin). CRF was measured with the 20m-Shuttle-Run-Test from the Fitnessgram battery test as number of laps. Pearson correlation was used for bivariate associations between BF, CRF and inflammatory markers. Linear regression analyses were used to examine the association between BF, CRF and inflammation markers with adjustments for age and sex. Pearson’s correlation analyses, adjusted for age and sex, revealed that BF was positively correlated with leptin (r=0.640, P <0.001) and C-RP (r=0.235, P <0.001), and negatively correlated with CRF (r= -0.473, P <0.001) whereas CRF was inversely correlated leptin (r= -0.420, P <0.001) and C-RP (r= –0.226, P <0.001). Among the inflammatory markers leptin (β= 0.188, p<0.001) and C-RP (β= 0.030, p<0.05) were positively associated with BF whereas leptin (β= -0,160, p<0.001) and C-RP (β= -0.56, p<0.001) were inversely associated with CRF, conversely, TNF-α (β= 0.118, p<0.05) showed a positive association with CRF. No associations were found between BF, CRF and IL-6. Our findings emphasize the importance of increasing CRF levels and decrease body fatness among adolescents in order to prevent metabolic abnormalities predisposed to or associated inflammation and thus contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases later in life.
- Can ankle anticipatory postural adjustments associated with gait initiation be modifiede in post stroke subjects submitted to a physiotherapy program?Publication . Pereira, S.; Silva, A.; Silva, C.; Sousa, A.; Gomes, J.; Faria, S.; Santos, RubimPostural control is a complex ability of the central nervous system, fundamental prerequisite in several motor programs, that is often compromised after central nervous system injury, particularly in ischemic events involving the middle cerebral artery. Stroke in this territory frequently compromise cortical output from pre-motor and supplementary motor areas and their connectivity with subcortical structures such as reticular formation.
- Committed to quality in physical activity programmes for elderly people – The customer resultsPublication . Marques, A.; Soares, P.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Santos, Paula Clara; Moreira, C.; Vale, S.; Santos, R.; Carvalho, J.There has been a growing concern in conceiving physical activity (PA) programmes for elderly people since the evidence indicates that this type of health promotion interventions may reduce the deleterious effects of the aging process. In Portugal, the Public Administration is the sector that offers the largest supply of goods and services and as such, it is the sector that must devote most attention to Quality Some studies support the EFQM Excellence Model as an operational framework for Total Quality Management. Excellent Results with respect to Performance, Customers, People and Society are achieved through Leadership driving Policy and Strategy that is delivered through People, Partnerships and Resources, as well as Processes. Consequently, the EFQM Model might be used as a self-assessment instrument, to discern the strengths of the programmes, as well as areas in which improvement can be made. The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the existence of customers’ outcomes measurement in Portuguese PA programmes for elderly people, comparing it with programmes’ characteristics and 2) to analyse the associations between the different evaluated items. Data were collected by an on-line questionnaire sent to 26 Coordinators of PA Programmes. Descriptive statistics were used in order to characterize de PA programmes and the participants’ outcome measurement items. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher’s Exact Test and Pearson’s Qui-square test. 57,7 % of the programmes recorded participants’ outcome measures at regular intervals. Most of them (73,3%; p 0.05) were free of charge programmes. Statistically significant associations were found between the following outcomes items: cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, coordination, balance and body composition. Portuguese PA programmes for elderly people showed a feeble attention on participants’ outcome measures, even though the measurement process represents one of the most important components of customer results from an exercise programme. Furthermore, there are significant differences between customers’ outcome measures chosen by each programme.
