C.; Mendonça, D.; Alves, O.; Barbosa, A.To determine the prevalence of Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) before, during pregnancy and following childbirth, and also to analyse the impact of a health education campaign about SUI prevention, following childbirth in Viana District, Portugal.
- Phonophoresis with diclofenac gel in the ankle sprainsPublication . Mendonça, C.; Torres, RuiThe ankle sprains represents one of the most frequent muscular-skeletal injuries in the physical therapy practice, specially at the acute stage, after the injury. The most common therapeutic modalities used to eliminate the pain and the inflammatory process in the acute stage are the administration of non-steroid Antiinflammatory drugs and the Ultrasound therapy. Even though the use of these type of drugs often brings some side effects related to it’s oral administration. The Transdermic administration of this drug in gel form brings some actual controversy about it’s deep penetration and therapeutic index.
- Gestational weght gain and body mass index in pre-school childrenPublication . Santos, P. C.; Vale, S.; Santos, R.; Moreira, C.; Marques, A. I.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Mota, J.To examine the association between gestational weight gain (GWG) and body mass index (BMI) in pre-school children.
- Influence of physical activity in weight gain, blood glucose levels and blood pressure in pregmant womenPublication . Santos, Paula Clara; Leal, I.; Santos, R.; Vale, S.; Alves, O.; Moreira, C.; Marques, AI.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Mota, J.The purpose of our study was to understand the influence of physical activity (PA) in weight gain, blood glucose levels, blood pressure in pregnancy and parity. Cross-sectional evaluation analysis of 100 women, aged between17 to 42, from Santo Antonio General Hospital was done. PA was assessed using the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ). We found that levels of PA and total weight gain of pregnant women were not associated (p = 0.352), and there was no linear correlation between the total score for PA and blood glucose levels (p = 0.849 for fasting glucose levels and p = 0.438 for blood sugar levels after 50 g glucose). In addition PA and blood pressure values were also not correlated (p = 0.166 for systolic blood pressure; p = 0.233 for diastolic It was found a correlation between PA and parity (multiparous had higher levels of PA: p = 0.020). The statistical tests used were the Spearman’s ρ and chi-square (p<0.05). In this study we did not find associations among PA and the following variables: gain weight, blood glucose and blood pressure. Howev we saw that PA levels were higher in multiparous compared to primiparous.
- Influence of physical activity on anxiety levels in pregnancyPublication . Santos, Paula Clara; Silva, S.; Vale, S.; Santos, R.; Alves, O.; Moreira, C.; Marques, AI.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Mota, J.The aims of this study were twofold. First to evaluate the influence of physical activity (PA) on anxiety levels on pregnancy. Second to analyse the influence of parity and a history of previous miscarriage in PA. In this observational, analytic and cross sectional study, it was used a sample of 100 women, aged 17 to 42 years, from Santo Antonio General Hospital. PA and anxiety were assessed using the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ) and the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale. It was found that levels of PA were not linearly correlated with the anxiety levels p= 0.144. It was also found an association between PA and parity, whereby multiparous women had higher levels of PA (p=0.020) and between PA and previous miscarriage women with levels of physical activity higher had fewer previous miscarriages (p=0,032). The statistical test used was the Spearman’s ρ and chichisquare. In all tests it was considered a significance level of 0,05. In conclusion, through this study it was not possible to verify that PA during pregnancy is related to anxiety. We concluded that there are only associations between, PA and number of births and PA and a history of previous miscarriage.
- Committed to quality in physical activity programmes for elderly people – The customer resultsPublication . Marques, A.; Soares, P.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Santos, Paula Clara; Moreira, C.; Vale, S.; Santos, R.; Carvalho, J.There has been a growing concern in conceiving physical activity (PA) programmes for elderly people since the evidence indicates that this type of health promotion interventions may reduce the deleterious effects of the aging process. In Portugal, the Public Administration is the sector that offers the largest supply of goods and services and as such, it is the sector that must devote most attention to Quality Some studies support the EFQM Excellence Model as an operational framework for Total Quality Management. Excellent Results with respect to Performance, Customers, People and Society are achieved through Leadership driving Policy and Strategy that is delivered through People, Partnerships and Resources, as well as Processes. Consequently, the EFQM Model might be used as a self-assessment instrument, to discern the strengths of the programmes, as well as areas in which improvement can be made. The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the existence of customers’ outcomes measurement in Portuguese PA programmes for elderly people, comparing it with programmes’ characteristics and 2) to analyse the associations between the different evaluated items. Data were collected by an on-line questionnaire sent to 26 Coordinators of PA Programmes. Descriptive statistics were used in order to characterize de PA programmes and the participants’ outcome measurement items. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher’s Exact Test and Pearson’s Qui-square test. 57,7 % of the programmes recorded participants’ outcome measures at regular intervals. Most of them (73,3%; p 0.05) were free of charge programmes. Statistically significant associations were found between the following outcomes items: cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, coordination, balance and body composition. Portuguese PA programmes for elderly people showed a feeble attention on participants’ outcome measures, even though the measurement process represents one of the most important components of customer results from an exercise programme. Furthermore, there are significant differences between customers’ outcome measures chosen by each programme.
- Influence of birthweight, socioeconomic status, cardio-respiratory fitness in body mass indexPublication . Vale, S.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Santos, R.; Moreira, C.; Marques, A. I.; Santos, P. C.; Aleixo, I.; Mota, J.The increasing overweight and obesity prevalence among children and adolescents may not only result in life quality prejudice but also increase obesity indexes at adult age. Perinatal factors such birthweight (BW) as well as socioeconomic factors (SES) and cardio respiratory fitness (CRF) have shown different associations with adolescents’ obesity level. Thus, the aims of the present study were to describe the prevalence of overweight/obesity (Ov/ Ob) and, to evaluate the associations of BW, SES and CRF on adolescents body mass index (BMI).
