- 21st Century Challenges in Engineering and Technological learningPublication . Viegas, Clara; Marques, Arcelina; Alves, Gustavo R.The success of 21st century engineers1 depends on demanding challenges, involving a large scope of scientific and social competences. College education must help students to develop those competences in collaborative environments and better address these needs. Developing students’ knowledge and skills in contextualized engineering environments, practicing teamwork, leadership, decision-making, experimental work and critical thinking are some of the important aspects addressed in this track.
- A 360º overview of the VISIR remote laboratory in a handbookPublication . García-Zubía, Javier; Hernandez-Jayo, Unai; Alves, GustavoThe Virtual Instrument Systems In Reality (VISIR) remote laboratory was considered the best remote laboratory in the world, by the Global Online Laboratory Consortium (GOLC), in 2015. The first operational version of the VISIR remote laboratory was deployed in 2001. It was designed by Ingvar Gus tavsson, with the collaboration of Kristian Nilsson and Johan Zackrisson. Since then, VISIR has been deployed 21 times, in 19 universities, in 14 countries, on five continents. Because of it, there is a very powerful user community that serves thousands of students and is articulated around the VISIR Special Interest Group (SIG) and the VISIR Federation. However, this community of users does not have a unique document that integrates all the knowledge created and needed by the group. This paper describes the first handbook fully dedicated to the VISIR re mote laboratory, aimed at closing that gap.
- Academic effectiveness of VISIR remote lab in analog electronicsPublication . Garcia-Zúbia, Javier; Henandez-Jayo, Unai; Gustavsson, Ingvar; Alves, Gustavo R.The effectiveness of VISIR is compared to other experimentation activities under the point of view presented by the professor Soysal in 2000. Advantages and limitations are discussed in terms of equipment availability, infrastructure cost, and contribution to various elements of experimental learning.
- Activated Carbon Produced from Tanning Industry Residues Used to Remove Carbamazepine from WastewaterPublication . Marques, David; Freitas, Maria Madalena; Silva, P. C.According to UNESCO, emerging pollutants are posing a threat to ecosystems and human health. These compounds can be either synthetic or natural chemicals or microorganisms, that are not usually regulated, and can be found in hospital wastewater, even after conventional treatment processes. Carbamazepine is a mood stabilizing drug and an anticonvulsant. Due to its persistence, carbamazepine is one of the most frequently detected pharmaceuticals in wastewater. Though there are many methods to remove such pollutants, adsorption is one of the most effective treatments. To remove carbamazepine from solution, an activated carbon prepared from leather residues and a commercial activated carbon were used as adsorbents. The adsorption tests show that the leather residue derived activated carbons have higher specific surface area (>1500 m’/g) and higher adsorption capacity (q > 300 mgcnz/g) for carbamazepine when compared to commercial activated carbon (992 m’/g and q < 180 mgcaz/g, respectively).
- Active learning of DC circuits: spreading the use of the VISIR remote lab in ArgentinaPublication . Evangelista, Ignacio; Cadierno, Matías; Farina, Juan; Roldán, Gabriel; García-Zubía, Javier; Hernández, Unai; Alves, Gustavo R.; Pozzo, María I.; Dobboletta, Elsa; Marchisio, Susana; Concari, Sonia; Nilsson, KristianThe VISIR+ Project was launched in 2015 with the objective of spreading the use of the VISIR remote laboratory in Latin America, promoting an enquiry-based approach to teaching and learning on electric and electronic circuits. Within the scope of this project, several didactical implementations were achieved both in Argentina and in Brazil. This article describes the latest implementation of VISIR in a pre-university technical school in Argentina (associated partner of the VISIR+ team) in three Physics courses with students having different background knowledge and interests. A set of activities comprising simulations, remote and hands-on experiments were designed in order to engage students in the learning process. The implementation was assessed in terms of the learning objectives and outcomes. Results showed that VISIR is an effective tool to promote active learning. Moreover, this experience seems highly valuable to encourage the dissemination of VISIR in Argentina
- Advances on Sustainable Development in Higher EducationPublication . Caetano, Nídia; Felgueiras, CarlosSustainable development has been linked to the ecological, economic and social dimensions, and it appears from the outset that it is a complex task to include several very different aspects while planning and projecting. This multi-dimensional feature migrates to education sustainable development that is, as expected, a complex task. Traditional education based on specialization of subjects and unidirectionality of strategies has often proved to be insufficient. The present Track intends to be a space of debate of the challenges posed to Higher Education professionals as strategic partners for the development of different mindsets, able to tackle the real problems.
- An Automated Verification Process Based on Scan TechniquePublication . Alves, Gustavo R.; Krug, Margrit R.; Lubaszewski, Marcelo S.; Ferreira, Jose M.Matching the results achieved during circuit simulation with those extracted from circuit functioning is a common verification process. A large number of current verification techniques use the input / output vectors produced during functional simulation as the test vectors applied / compared against the circuit responses. Techniques that are more complete include extracting the values of internal sequential nodes and comparing these using internal scans. This paper describes a solution for verifying digital designs implemented in currently commercial available CPLDs. All internal flip-flops are included in a scan-chain accessible through the BST infrastructure (using a user-defined optional instruction), while the BS cells are used to apply the input test vectors and capture the circuit responses. These BS cells can either belong to the device-under-test or to other devices, the first controlled through the optional INTEST instruction and the second controlled through the mandatory EXTEST instruction. To speed up the verification process, the test program is automatically generated from information that encompasses the design & development phase.
