Pereira, Raquel; Dias Pinto Ribeiro, Maria Clara; Castro, LuizThe international trade of marble and granite products, in particular that of ornamental stones and cladding material, has seen, in recent decades, a marked increase in world demand and trade. In this sector, Brazil is a major world player, either as a producer or as exporter. In this sense, it is important to identify which are the factors and the competitive advantages of Brazilian exports of these commodities. The approach followed in this study was based on an ex-post analysis, through the calculation of some international trade indicators, in the 2004-2015 period, namely the Revealed Comparative Advantages Index (RCAI), the Regional Orientation Index (ROI) and the Constant Market Share (CMS) model. The goal is to analyze the performance of Brazilian exports, of the main ornamental and cladding rocks, and to identify their main sources of growth, compared to world exports. The results indicate that, on an aggregate perspective, Brazil has comparative advantages in the entire period (2004-2015), as well as an increase in the share of Brazilian exports in the international market in the recent period, 2012-2015. The ROI results indicate that the Brazilian exports of these products are moving towards the United States of America (USA) and, to a lesser extent, to Italy, Mexico, Canada and Taiwan. Also, the US presents the most dynamic growth rate for the ROI. In addition, the results indicate that some traditional European markets such as the United Kingdom and Spain, are losing relative importance as destination markets for Brazilian exports of these commodities. Regarding the main sources of exports growth, in the first two subperiods, 2004-2007 and 2008-2011, the results indicate that the Brazilian export growth, for the whole sector, was due, mainly, to the growth effect of world trade and that the competitiveness effect was negative in both subperiods. For the most recent period, 2012-2015, the results indicate that the destination effect of exports seems to be the main source of the Brazilian exports growth of these products. Additionally, in this period, the competitiveness effect reaches a positive value. Recognizing the methodology limitations, which can’t identify the variables that determined Brazil's competitiveness in these commodities trade, the results indicate that Brazilian exporters of these commodities may increase exports, especially to new markets with a very dynamic demand.

- Flexible 2D and 3D conductive hydrogel platforms for wearable applicationsPublication . Aguiar, Leonor; Pereira, Raquel; Sharma, Sanjiv; Martins, GabrielaHydrogels have risen as exceptionally promising support materials in the development of novel wearable electronic devices. Their remarkable biocompatibility coupled with customizable mechanical features make these biomaterials ideal choices for applications involving direct contact with biological tissues. In this study, a simple and straightforward manufacturing process using bio-sourced polysaccharide chitosan (Chi) was employed for the fabrication of flexible and transparent biopolymeric membranes. Subsequently, this two-dimensional (2D) platform was made conductive, through a one-step process, by utilizing an optimized ratio of chitosan, lactic acid, and silver nanowires (Chi-LaA-AgNWs) dispersion. These electrodes were produced by screen printing technique. Furthermore, a solvent casting technique employing inverse polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds was used to fabricate mechanically stable chitosan microneedles (Chi-MNs). These three dimensional (3D) structures were enriched with a carbon-based ink during the casting of concentrated Chi hydrogels into the mold while utilizing centrifugal forces. The electrochemical properties of the fabricated 2D and 3D conductive platforms were evaluated through cyclic voltammetry (CV). Along this study, the water swelling properties of Chi hydrogels were investigated by incorporating natural crosslinkers and plasticizing compounds like citric acid, glycerol, and sorbitol. Optimization of fabrication, physico-chemical and morphological analysis of the membranes and MNs were also performed. Ultimately, the use of Chi combined with environmentally friendly agents enabled the fabrication of flexible conductive platforms holding good stability, uniformity, and desirable electrical attributes.
- Internationalization strategies – a study case for portuguese firmsPublication . Pereira, Raquel; Pinto, MarleneInternationalization remains widely debated as it is seen as a key strategy for the competitiveness of companies and economies. In the Portuguese context, where there has been a favorable and sustained evolution of exports for several years, the internationalization and diversification of markets seems to play a fundamental role for the sustainability of companies. Following a qualitative methodology, our goal is to analyze the internationalization process (IP) of three SMEs to find out how they approach the international markets. The results suggest some evidence concerning the usefulness of the reviewed literature. They indicate that Uppsala model is useful to understand part of the SMEs IP. However, they also indicate that some firms begin their IP very quickly to dispersed markets, diverging from some of the principles of the Uppsala model. For the firms under study, exporting is the main strategy or entry mode in the external markets and the reasons to begin the IP are related to factors such as the manager’s profile, the business model and the networks which the company may be a part of.

- Thermal tourism: study of the profile and motivations of the practitioner in PortugalPublication . Loureiro, Isabel Sofia; Gomes, Helena; Costa, Vânia; Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Pereira, Raquel; Nunes, AlcinaHealth and wellness tourism had a growing interest in the Portuguese population until 2019. However, with the appearance of Covid-19, several establishments had to close over these two years, this segment being one of the most affected areas. Many water users looked forward to the opening of the spa resorts to continue their treatments. Given the importance of this theme, this work has as its main goal the definition of a consumer profile and to identify the determinants of satisfaction of the thermal tourists, as well as to gauge the degree of knowledge of thermal tourism and specifically of spas in the Portuguese context. In methodological terms, a questionnaire survey was conducted among the tourists to achieve the research objectives. The results show a younger, healthier and diversified thermal tourism practitioner. It also reveals similarities with other profile and motivations studies. However, it is possible to notice a few differences. Practitioners are seeking a combination of a leisure and health dimension and valorise factors such as location and access of the establishments, quality of the services provided and rest and tranquillity. An issue regarding their length of stay has been identified. As they are locals and live in the same country as the thermal spa, most respondents do not stay overnight at the destination. In the future, it would be interesting to research product development and market strategies for diversified thermal practitioners.
