- Legacy of war, pillars of peace: german WWII bunkers and fortifications as touristic assets in northern France, Belgium, and PolandPublication . Silva, Gonçalo José Pinheiro da; Furtado, Marco António Cerqueira MendesThis thesis looks on the conversion of German World War II bunkers and defences in Northern France, Belgium, and Poland into valuable tourist and educational resources. These once-powerful military fortifications, built by Nazi Germany as defensive strongholds, have subsequently been transformed as places of recollection and historical reflection. The study digs into the complex process by which these bunkers transitioned from being emblems of war and oppression to being vital parts of dark tourism and heritage preservation. The study's primary concerns include the ethical implications of reusing locations of trauma and violence. The thesis critically investigates how these constructions, which are often located in war-torn areas, have become commodified as tourist attractions. This commodification poses crucial considerations about how to strike a balance between honouring those who have suffered and capitalising on tourism's economic benefits. Furthermore, the study investigates the significance of these sites in conserving collective memory, emphasising how they serve as effective teaching instruments for engaging the public with the historical events of World War II. The dissertation illustrates how communities have integrated these bunkers into local economies while preserving their historical relevance by examining both the cultural and economic implications of converting them into tourist attractions. The study also includes case studies of successfully changed bunkers, which demonstrate best practices for sustainable tourism, preservation, and community involvement. At last, this thesis explains how WWII bunkers and fortifications, which were once symbols of violence and division, have developed into pillars of peace and education. Their transformation not only preserves World War II history, but also contributes to the socioeconomic development of the communities in which they are located, teaching lessons in recollection, contemplation, and responsible heritage tourism.
- Migratory movements in Portugal: an analysis on the city of BragaPublication . Magalhães, Rafaela Carina Martins; Furtado, Marco António Cerqueira MendesThis study investigates the impact of migratory flows on the city of Braga, exploring how these movements have contributed to the urban, social, economic, and cultural transformation of the region. Portugal, with its unique situation, has experienced significant changes in migratory dynamics, making it an increasingly attractive destination for immigrants from various parts of the world. The objective of this dissertation is to analyse these migratory flows both historically and currently, with a specific focus on Braga, a city in northern Portugal with a history dating back to the Roman era. To achieve a comprehensive understanding, a mixed methodology was employed. The qualitative method included interviews with the Mayor of Braga, Ricardo Rio, and the President of the Immigrant Integration Association, providing direct insights from management sources on the influence of recent migratory dynamics in the city. Concurrently, the quantitative method involved the administration of questionnaires to immigrants, enabling the collection of data on their experiences and perceptions. The results indicate that the number of immigrants in Braga has significantly increased in recent years, due to various factors that will be examined in the chapters of the dissertation. Beyond the numbers, this study analyses the social, cultural, and economic implications of this growth. The arrival of new residents brings benefits, such as the introduction of new cultures and customs, but also challenges, such as the need for new integration policies and the adaptation of social services. The analysis also explores the connection between migratory movements and regional economic development, highlighting the complexity of integrating newcomers into Braga's society. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the current migratory dynamics, examining the advantages and disadvantages that migration brings to the city of Braga.
- Navigating intercultural dynamics and employer branding: strategies for talent retentionPublication . Ferreira, Sara Beatriz Guedes; Furtado, Marco António Cerqueira MendesThis report provides a comprehensive study of the intricate interaction between intercultural studies, employer branding, and employee satisfaction within a globalized business context. In an era of rapid globalization, understanding cultural dynamics is crucial for organizations to achieve outstanding outcomes from diverse workgroups. This research emphasizes that organizations promoting interculturalism and aligning corporate culture with employee expectations can significantly enhance retention, satisfaction, and overall mission effectiveness. A case study of VML Enterprise Solutions illustrates how cultural initiatives, such as a cultural calendar, have markedly improved employee engagement in a hybrid, multicultural environment. As part of this case study, a survey titled "Exploring Interaction and Cultural Elements in the Workplace," was conducted which provided valuable insights into employee perceptions and experiences related to cultural initiatives. Additionally, an interview with Magdalena Kornaś-Owsiana, the Group Head of Employer Branding & Communication, to gain insights into the employer branding plan and its alignment with cultural initiatives. The findings from both the survey and the interview underscore the importance of integrating cultural initiatives into a broader strategy that addresses work-life balance, career development, and fair compensation. Ultimately, prioritizing inclusivity, recognition, and effective communication enables organizations to cultivate a positive workplace culture that attracts and retains top talent, ensuring long-term success in an increasingly competitive market.
- Organizational culture: toxic organizational environment and benefits of the application of the psychological safety concept at the workplacePublication . Carneiro, Sandra Daniela Brito; Furtado, Marco António Cerqueira MendesThe present study experimentally researches the characteristics of toxic cultures and the proper way to detox organizations giving special emphasis to the application of the psychological safety concept at the workplace by studying its benefits. To reach that level of empirical investigation and analysis, concepts such as organizational culture, its dynamics, as well as their different tangible and intangible levels needed to be explored. These concepts are inherently connected to toxicity lived at the workplace because to work on a company detox, it is necessary to study any company’s visible layers, as well as its most deepest layers of assumptions that form its cultural DNA. Besides, other studies where toxicity was debated as a current problem in many companies were explored with the main objective to compare what have been discovered with what the interviewees from this research reported to have lived in their organizational context. The ultimate objective of this dissertation was to compare the perspective of both employees and managers on the mentioned topics, giving contours to other related questions within the theme, as a way to contribute to the measures and strategies that can help mitigate toxicity in the corporative world. Both involved groups present similarities in many circumnstances but always with different visions in mind, whereas employees are more focused on preserving their own individuality, managers observe this same individuality as a beneficial contribution not only to the personal growth of the employee, but also for the economic growth of the company itself.
