- An approach for automated service selection and ranking using services choreographyPublication . Silva, Firmino; Chituc, Claudia-Melania; Grefen, PaulIn today’s highly competitive market, it is critical to provide customers services with a high level of configuration to answer their business needs. Knowing in advance the performance associated with a specific choreography of services (e.g., by taking into account the expected results of each component service) represents an important asset that allows businesses to provide a global service tailored to customers’ specific requests. This research work aims at advancing the state-of-the-art in this area by proposing an approach for service selection and ranking using services choreography, predicting the behavior of the services considering customers’ requirements and preferences, business process constraints and characteristics of the execution environment.
- An architecture for an effective usage of data mining in business intelligence systemsPublication . Azevedo, Ana; Santos, Manuel FilipeBusiness Intelligence (BI) is one emergent area of the Decision Support Systems (DSS) discipline. Over the last years, the evolution in this area has been considerable. Similarly, in the last years, there has been a huge growth and consolidation of the Data Mining (DM) field. DM is being used with success in BI systems, but a truly DM integration with BI is lacking. Therefore, a lack of an effective usage of DM in BI can be found in some BI systems. An architecture that pretends to conduct to an effective usage of DM in BI is presented.

- Challenges of digital transformation in higher education institutions: a brief discussionPublication . Rodrigues, Luis SilvaLike many industries, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been exploiting emerging technologies as a way to improve performance and adapt to the increasingly technology-driven society. Although digital transformation is most often associated with business organizations, it is also an important issue for HEIs and presents some challenges that must be considered when defining digital policies and strategies. In this paper, as a starting point for our research, a brief discussion on the main challenges of digital transformation in HEIs is presented.
- A DCAP for the social and solidarity economyPublication . Malta, Mariana Curado; Baptista, Ana Alice; Parente, CristinaThis article presents a work-in-progress version of a Dublin Core Application Profile (DCAP) developed to serve the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE). Studies revealed that this community is interested in implementing both internal interoperability between their Web platforms to build a global SSE e-marketplace, and external interoperability among their Web platforms and external ones. The Dublin Core Application Profile for Social and Solidarity Economy (DCAP-SSE) serves this purpose. SSE organisations are submerged in the market economy but they have specificities not taken into account in this economy. The DCAP-SSE integrates terms from well-known metadata schemas, Resource Description Framework (RDF) vocabularies or ontologies, in order to enhance interoperability and take advantage of the benefits of the Linked Open Data ecosystem. It also integrates terms from the new essglobal RDF vocabulary which was created with the goal to respond to the SSE-specific needs. The DCAP-SSE also integrates five new Vocabulary Encoding Schemes to be used with DCAP-SSE properties. The DCAP development was based on a method for the development of application profiles (Me4MAP). We believe that this article has an educational value since it presents the idea that it is important to base DCAP developments on a method. This article shows the main results of applying such a method.
- Dealing with plagiarism in undergraduate education to achieve intelectual property rights.Publication . Braga, InêsWe intend to reflect on a worrying issue in higher education – plagiarism, a practice that has existed for a long time but is now easier. In fact, it is worth remembering that the digital paradigm has been gaining even greater expression in the current context of a pandemic in which personal, academic, social and professional life has been predominantly reorganized digitally. This investigation is based on the concepts of Plagiarism and Intellectual Property Rights, within the framework of higher education in which the author has vast experience as a teacher who has always been concerned with instilling in students the ethical use of information, one of the aspects of Information Literacy. The methodology of this study includes a literature review, favoring good practices carried out by reference institutions in the field, such as The International Center for Academic Integrity and several universities that, in an organized and responsible manner, aim to promote an academic culture of honesty and intellectual integrity, guiding and training teachers and students. We highlight the University of Waterloo which has an Office of Academic Integrity, the Purdue University which has the Online Writing Lab (OWL), and the University of California San Diego whose website has a tab titled "Excel with integrity", all of them providing guidance, training, advice and pedagogical approaches related to academic integrity. In short, all this qualified information available on the internet, very easily, at the distance of a click, it is undoubtedly a very important help, above all, for students, to obtain knowledge and skills about what plagiarism is, ways to fight it, to achieve academic success while respecting legal issues and copyright. In conclusion, we are of the opinion that, more than punishing, Education policies should focus on training the various educational agents to fight a reprehensible and illegal intellectual act, they should clarify and clearly define important concepts related to this complex issue and should promote open debate on the subject. They must also invest resources and promote marketing policies in favor of intellectual property rights and must instill in teachers the courage to denounce and report the unethical use of information by students, even if this represents an inconvenience and an increase in work, at the bureaucratic level. Finally, it will certainly be through a collaborative work between Ministries, educational institutions, their leaders, teachers and students that the task of training for the safe and ethical use of information in an academic context will have more impact and better results.
- Developing a metadata application profile for the daily hire labourPublication . Sen, Sangeeta; Raza, Nishat; Dutta, Animesh; Malta, Mariana Curado; Baptista, Ana AliceEMPOWER SSE is a Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT, Portugal) and Department of Science & Technology (DST, India), financed research project that aims to use the Linked Open Data Framework to empower the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) Agents. It is a collaborative project between India and Portugal that is focused on defining a Semantic Web framework to consolidate players of the informal sector, enabling a paradigm shift. The Indian economy can be categorized into two sectors: formal and informal. The informal sector economy differs from the formal as it is an unorganized sector and comprised of economic activities that are not covered by formal arrangements such as taxation, labor protections, minimum wage regulations, unemployment benefits, or documentation. The major economy in India depends on the skilled labor of this informal sector such e.g. daily labor, farmers, electricians, food production, and small-scale industries (Kalyani, 2016). The informal sector is mainly made of skilled people that follow their family job traditions, sometimes they are not even formally trained. This sector struggles with the lack of information, data sharing needs and interoperability issues across systems and organizational boundaries. In fact, this sector does not have any visibility to the society not having the possibility to do business as most of the agents of this sector do not reach the end of the chain. This blocks them from getting proper exposure and a better livelihood.
