  • Programa de literacia em saúde mental: misofonia
Publication .
  • Virtual reality in the treatment of acrophobia
Publication . Maravalhas, Vanessa; Marques, António; Sousa, Sara; Monteiro, Pedro; Simões De Almeida, Raquel
Exposure Therapy using Virtual Reality has been indicated as one of the most promising therapeutic approaches in the treatment of Acrophobia, because Virtual Reality generates exposure conditions systematic controlled and customized desensitization of the individual concerning the phobic incitement and the impulsive responses related to it, potentiating the emotional self-regulated competence and the incorporated cognitive restructuration. This quasi-experimental study had the purpose to analyze the impact of an exposure therapy program using Virtual Reality in the reduction of fear of heights on a sample of the Portuguese population. In this study participated 19 people with and without fear of heights, being distributed by the experimental and control groups. The program was composed of 8 sessions distributed biweekly, corresponding to a total program duration of 4 weeks. The impact of the program was analyzed through the administration of anxiety and acrophobia level assessment instruments and operationalization of psychophysiological procedures, focused on the biofeedback principles, before and after the intervention. The results from both self-report and psychophysiological data revealed a significant reduction in fear of heights in the participants exposed to the exposure therapy program, showing a positive impact of this protocol on the treatment of Acrophobia.
  • Validation of the Portuguese version of community attitudes toward people with mental illness (CAMI) [artigo]
Publication . Lopes, Inês; Simões de Almeida, Raquel; Marques, António; Curral, Rosário; de Sousa, Sara
Stigma remains a feature that influences the lifestyle of people with mental illness. Negative attitudes, stereotypes, and discrimination are still prevalent in these people’s life. Stigma is considered a public health problem that occurs unconsciously in society, categorizing people. Portugal is the seventh-worst country concerning stigma in Mental Health. There have been few improvements in reducing stigma over time, and there is a great need to create investigations and validate instruments that measure stigma in the population. This study aims to address the gaps in the level of studies and normative instruments that measure the stigma of the Portuguese population in the face of mental illness. It, therefore, aims to adapt and validate community attitudes toward people with mental illness (CAMI) culturally and examine its psychometric properties. Method: The 27-item version of CAMI was translated and back-translated into English, which was analyzed and evaluated by a panel of experts. A sociodemographic survey and CAMI were applied in an online format, in which participated 427 adults representing the Portuguese population in general. Finally, the reliability and validity of the instrument were analyzed. CAMI showed positive values of reliability and validity but not optimal. The confirmatory factor analysis values satisfactory values that indicate good quality of fit: x2 /df=3.296; comparative fit index = 0.601; goodness of fit index = 0.817; and root mean square error of approximation = 0.073, indicates good quality of fit. Cronbach alpha was different for each factor, but it was positive. Spearman coefficient (r=–0.343) obtained a negative but consistent value. This study contributed to the achievement and validation of new measures to assess the stigma of the general population related to people with mental illness. We must continue to analyze this theme, complete the validation of this instrument, and understand the existing levels of stigma, its predominance in society, and the possible creation and implementation of new measures that support literacy in mental illness and anti-stigma.

This paper describes WEBECOOL, a hybrid web/mobile application with the purpose of improving the self-management of anxiety disorders. The development of WEBECOOL was driven by a multidisciplinary collaboration between computing engineers, psychologists and psychiatrics. The first stage of the web/mobile application test was performed to assess the satisfaction with the technological proposal. Also, several components were identified as crucial and were employed in WEBECOOL: stress management, problem solving, medication adherence, symptoms monitoring and social interaction. WEBECOOL also pretends to include caregivers in the process, with the purpose of implementing better help therapy strategies.
  • mHealth for illness self-management for people with schizophrenia: opportunities and implications in gamification
Publication . Simões de Almeida, Raquel
People with schizophrenia and other related disorders experience great difficulties in getting the appropriate treatment regarding not only the type of interventions available but also the conditions that required for a proper treatment, mainly cost, locale, and frequency. The use of gamified mHelath applications for this population is a proven way to provide a set of tools that may help patients to manage their condition using applications on mobile devices, like smartphones, that implemente game-like strategies and elements that transform unpleasant tasks into virtual challenges. This chapter addresses the impact and implications that the use of gamified mHealth applications have for people with schizophrenia, a comprehensive guide of recommendations and standards used by the industry on the development of gamified applications and provides a literature review on the subject. Publication .
  • Impact of a virtual reality-based simulation on empathy and knowledge toward Misophonia
Publication . Lopes, Inês; Simões De Almeida, Raquel; Marques, António
Virtual Reality (VR) is considered a powerful resource for developing empathy and pro-social behaviors since it allows individuals to experience a situation that is close to reality from another person's perspective. This quasi-experimental study was designed to measure the impact that a VR simulation which mimics the experience of misophonic symptoms, while performing a cognitive task, has on empathy and knowledge for this condition, compared to simply reading the descriptive vignette of the same simulation. The sample consisted of 98 higher education health students, randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The impact of the program was measured by filling out questionnaires on levels of empathy and knowledge about misophonia. Both methods (VR and vignette) were effective. However, the vignette proved to be more effective in some domains. These results suggest that not only VR, but also vignette texts may be interesting strategies for increasing empathy and knowledge towards people with misophonia in this population.
  • Forest bathing environments in virtual reality: enhancing well-being through immersive nature experiences
Publication . Almeida, Raquel Simões de; Gomes, Paulo Veloso; Marques, António; Pereira, Javier
The present study proposes an innovative approach to promote wellbeing by developing forest bathing environments in virtual reality (VR). Forest bathing, a practice rooted in traditional Japanese culture, involves immersing oneself in a forest atmosphere to enhance physical and mental health. VR technology enables the opportunity to recreate and simulate these natural environments, allowing individuals to experience the benefits of forest bathing regardless of their physical location and limitations of physical access to natural environments. This study aims to design and evaluate the effectiveness of a VR forest bathing environment in improving well-being, stress reduction, and overall relaxation.
