- Artificial intelligence in problem-based learning in higher education: A scoping reviewPublication . Alexandrino, Ana; Cunha, Christine; Lima, Teresa; Alexandrino, Ana Silva; Cunha, ChristineThe rapid evolution of technology calls for continuous pedagogical innovation in higher education, with active approaches like Problem-Based Learning (PBL) fostering critical thinking and collaboration. Artificial Intelligence (AI) shows strong potential to enhance PBL, yet there is a clear need for comprehensive research on its integration within higher education (HE) curricula. This study aims to map the scope of existing evidence on the use of AI in PBL contexts for higher education students. The eligibility criteria follow the PCC framework: Population: Higher education students; Concept: Use of Artificial Intelligence; Context: Problem-Based Learning. Methodology: Following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and reporting according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines, this scoping review addresses the main research question: What is the scope of existing evidence on the use of AI in PBL for higher education students? The sub-questions are: 1. What types of AI tools and systems are used and how are they pedagogically integrated into PBL approaches for HE students? 2. What are the identified benefits and challenges in using AI in PBL contexts for HE students? 3. What are the identified research gaps regarding the use of AI in PBL for HE students? A systematic search will be conducted in electronic databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and ScienceDirect, including studies published between 2015 and 2025, available in English or Portuguese. Study selection will be done by two independent reviewers. Results will be synthesized narratively, grouping findings thematically. This review expects to identify AI tools applied in PBL, pedagogical strategies, benefits, challenges, and gaps in the literature, offering evidence-based insights for pedagogical practice, and guide future research in this emerging domain.
- Nano versus bulk: Evaluating the toxicity of lanthanum, yttrium, and cerium oxides on Enchytraeus crypticusPublication . Santos, Joana; Neca, Inês; Capitão, Ana; Nogueira, João; Santos, José A. S.; Pinto, Edgar; Barreto, Angela; Silva, Ana L. Daniel da; Maria, Vera L.; Pinto, EdgarConsidering the increase in demand for rare earth elements (REEs) and their accumulation in soil ecosystems, it is crucial to understand their toxicity. However, the impact of lanthanum, yttrium and cerium oxides (La2O3, Y2O3 and CeO2, respectively) on soil organisms remains insufficiently studied. This study aims to unravel the effects of La2O3, Y2O3 and CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and their corresponding bulk forms (0, 156, 313, 625, 1250 and 2500 mg/kg) on the terrestrial species Enchytraeus crypticus. The effects on survival, reproduction (21 days (d)), avoidance behavior (2 d) and DNA integrity (2 and 7 d) of E. crypticus were evaluated. No significant effects on survival were observed. For La2O3, the bulk form affected more endpoints than the NPs, inducing avoidance behavior (1250 mg/kg) and DNA damage (1250 mg/kg - 2 d; 2500 mg/kg - 7 d). The Y2O3 NPs demonstrated higher toxicity than the bulk form: decreased reproduction (≥ 1250 mg/kg); induced avoidance behavior (≥ 625 mg/kg) and DNA damage (≥ 156 mg/kg - 2 d; 2500 mg/kg - 7 d). For CeO2, both forms exhibited similar toxicity, decreasing reproduction (625 mg/kg for bulk and 2500 mg/kg for NPs) and inducing DNA damage at all tested concentrations for both forms. REEs oxides toxicity was influenced by the REEs type and concentration, exposure time and material form, suggesting different modes of action. This study highlights the distinct responses of E. crypticus after exposure to REEs oxides and shows that REEs exposure may differently affect soil organisms, emphasizing the importance of risk assessment.
- Scapular muscle dynamic stiffness of asymptomatic subjects and subjects with chronic shoulder pain, at rest and isometric contraction conditionsPublication . Melo, Ana S. C.; Pinheiro de Sousa, Andreia Sofia; Montóia, Bárbara; Cruz, Eduardo B.; Vilas-Boas, J. Paulo; Sousa, Andreia S. P.Muscle stiffness had a crucial role in joint stability, particularly, at the shoulder complex. Although changes in upper trapezius muscle stiffness have been described for shoulder pain, contradictory findings have been obtained. Also, existing data regarding scapular muscles are, majorly, about trapezius. Myotonometry is a method used to assess stiffness; however, the reliability values of scapular muscle stiffness through this method have not been assessed in shoulder pain conditions. The present study aims to compare scapular muscles’ stiffness (trapezius, serratus anterior, and levator scapulae) between subjects with and without chronic shoulder pain and to evaluate the related test-retest reliability. Twenty-two symptomatic and twenty-two asymptomatic subjects participated in a cross-sectional study. The dynamic muscular stiffness of scapular muscles, at rest and during an isometric contraction, was measured bilaterally with myotonometry, in two moments. The differences in bilateral averaged values between symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects and the effect of the group (group presenting pain in the dominant or non-dominant side, and asymptomatic group) and of the limb (unilateral painful or asymptomatic limb, and bilateral asymptomatic limbs) were investigated. Test-retest intra-rater reliability was determined. An effect of the group was observed at rest, for middle trapezius stiffness, and during contraction, for middle and lower trapezius stiffness. For middle trapezius, increased values were observed in the group presenting pain in non-dominant side comparing to both groups or to group presenting pain in dominant side. The intraclass correlation coefficient, majorly, ranged between 0.775 and 0.989. Participants with pain in the non-dominant side presented an increased middle trapezius’ stiffness. Globally, high reliability was observed for scapular muscles dynamic stiffness.

- Worker 4.0: A textile exoskeleton to support apparel industryPublication . Oliveira, João; Costa, Luani; Ramôa, Ana; Silva, Ricardo; Fertuzinhos, Aureliano; Estudante, Inês; Pinheiro, João; Vale, Bruno; Pilastri, André; Dias, Paula; Matta, Arthur; Sampaio, Rosane; Machado, Dário; Cortez, Paulo; Costa, Marta; Roças, Ana; Madureira, Pedro; Moreira, Juliana; Pereira, João Rui; Pereira, Carla; Bruno, FernandoSTVgoDigital project aims the transition of the textile and apparel industries to the new Industry 4.0 paradigm promoting the digitalization to increase productivity and efficiency of the entire value chain. Specifically, the PPS4 Worker 4.0 aims to develop an exoskeleton solution based on sensing and active components within a garment to support sewing operation movements that may cause injuries and/or pain in sewing machine workers. Seamstresses’ work requires physical efforts related to poor posture and repetitive tasks that increase the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders. In a general context, in industrial environments have been implemented lower and upper limb devices empowered for human ergonomic improvement, due to the high prevalence of postural complaints and consequently pain. With this, much has been developed in the realm of exoskeletons and artificial muscles aimed at various situations. To achieve the objectives of developing an exoskeleton that integrates a sensing component that monitors workers’ movements in real-time, identifying its ergonomic posture, feeds the actuation component, and uses machine learning algorithms to predict future ergonomic risks in a wearable, light, and flexible garment to support the execution of movements inherent to some professional activities, this research was based on an ergonomic risk assessment and definition of performance parameters, the definition of the architecture system and the wearable garment, and in the construction of prototypes and analysis in a laboratory environment with seamstress’ volunteers.
Pereira, Sílvia Catarina; Costa, Maria José; Mesquita, Cristina; Lopes, Sofia; Vieira, Ana Isabel; Santos, Paula ClaraA positive correlation has been presented between health literacy and physical activity which assume a central focus in public health issues as well as several benefits, namely for abdominal diastases. Determine the levels of Health Literacy related to Abdominal Diastasis in 18 to 65 years old Portuguese Women, residing in Portugal; verify the relationship between the domains of Literacy and the characteristics of the sample; and analyse the influence of Health Literacy on compliance with the WHO recommendations for the practice of Physical Activity. This is an observational, analytic, and transversal study, where the non-probabilistic sample, by convenience, is composed by 318 participants. For the collection of data, we used two digital self-fill questionnaires (QNLDRA e o IPAQ-short-version). The health literacy presents hit rates between 50%-75% (Sufficient). In addition, they also indicate that functional and interactive literacy appear to be the domains with the lower rates 25%-50% (Problematic). Whereas critical literacy points out to Excellent hit rates (75%-100%). Finally, the results show the absence of correlation between health literacy and the fulfilment of WHO recommendations as far as physical activity is concerned (p>0,005). Moreover, the analysis of the sample demonstrates the existence of sedentary behaviour and high levels of noncompliance of WHO recommendations (approximately 30%). Conclusion: There is a lack of knowledge as far as interactive and functional literacy are concerned, under the premise in study. High levels of noncompliance of WHO recommendations are noted. Finds show that physical activity is not influenced by health literacy.
- Health Literacy – knowledge about diastasis of the rectus and its relationship with pelvic floor dysfunctionsPublication . Costa, M. J.; Pereira, S. C.; Mesquita, Cristina; Lopes, Sofia; Vieira, A. I.; Santos, Paula ClaraHealth literacy (HL) enables people to be empowered, allowing them to make informed decisions and adopt healthy lifestyles. Throughout a woman's life cycle, events occur that can lead to the appearance of Diastasis of the Rectus Abdominal Muscles (ARD) and Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions (DPF). Assess the levels of HL related to ARD, through its domains – functional, interactive and critical – and its relationship with sociodemographic variables; as well analyze a possible relationship between the different levels of literacy and the presence of DPF. Cross-sectional study, consisting of 318 women who completed two online tests “Health Literacy - Knowledge about diastasis of the rectus abdominal muscles” and the “Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory”. Overall, the average literacy rate is low (Functional= 3,87±1,792; Interactive= 5,15±2,296; Critical= 10,49±1,779), since of the three domains analyzed, in two of them the levels of Literacy in ARD ranges from inappropriate to problematic. It was also verified the presence of better levels of literacy in younger women, in those with a higher academic degree and in health professionals. Finally, it was possible to verify that women who have one or more DPF have lower levels of literacy in all domains – functional, interactive and critical (s= - 0,271;p
