- Drawing in the visual identity design process: Casa da ArquitecturaPublication . Pereira, José Filipe; Serapicos, Pedro; Coelho, RitaThe outcome of a design project is judged by whether it succeeds or fails in achieving an objective, executing a function and the quality of how it manages to do it. This paper proposes an evaluation of the development process that leads to the final formalization and its consequent consideration. It is focused on the performative act of drawing and its performance as a tool for reflection, for mediating between rational intention and the mechanical consequence of the members who execute it (hand-brain operability), and its usefulness as a conductor of a process and communicator of development methodology and narrative. In graphic design, however synthetic and clear a manual of graphic standards and the presentation of a solution may be, the process validates the result not only by what works in practice, but by what has been discarded and has not withstood constant reflection, criticism, and testing. A final layer is added: the consideration of the aesthetic autonomy and transversal utility that the methodology anchored in the exploration of drawing can achieve. It is by investigating drawing that hypotheses are glimpsed, proposals are criticized and confirmed, and solutions are corrected and shaped. The practical case that illustrates this reflection is a two-year final project of a master’s degree in design, which includes the theoretical contextualization, the project record and the presentation of a solution for a new visual identity for the multidisciplinary cultural entity Casa da Arquitectura, in Matosinhos, Portugal. Our research question was to understand the value of drawing in the design process of this new flexible visual identity and through our active research we were able to validate drawing as a key instrument to assist ideation and testing for the solution.
- Dynamic visual identities: reflection on interaction and playfulness in visual identity design by Porto Design StudiosPublication . Coelho, Rita; Dias, SusanaThis paper is a part of an ongoing research conducted by the authors. As a primary effort of a bigger study, it aims to grasp a correlation between dynamic visual identities and contemporary society, considering the concepts of liquid modernity [1], mindfulness [2], playfulness [3] and relational design [4], among others. Some brands—particularly a sample of contemporary DVI’s from Porto Metropolitan Area’s design studios—are verified and analyzed through a condensing terminology, from Kopp [5], Kretuz [6], Olins [7, 8], Marriot [9], Nes [10], Oliveira et al. [11] to Lelis [12] and Martins et al. [13]. As methodology, we collected important references from literature review on several areas of study and some qualitative content visual analysis of dynamic visual identities from Porto’s graphic realm—our city’s design studios. As value, originality and motivation for this research, we advocate that DVIs do not seem to be taken into account by much of the scientific research in our field of expertise in our country, apart from certain authors that we refer to. We seek to share with design students and brand managers alike, the playful connections the design of a dynamic visual identity can have through a reduced attention span, that the fragmental media and capitalized culture have provoked. As a result of this exploratory research, we accomplish a preliminary contribution to the recognition of Portuguese DVIs, markedly from Porto graphic design studios—and critically reflect about how they are moving in that direction, discussing the benefits and consequences of play in DVIs.
- Exploring the users’ experience in healthcare servicesPublication . Rodrigues, Rita; Coelho, Rita; Tavares, João Manuel R. S.The challenge in Healthcare services concerns the development of an agreeable experience to the users without affecting the functionality of the service. The traditional approach of the facilities design is focused on providing the best care with the most functional service possible. Based on this paradigm, most of the times the users and their experiences and emotions are not considered when a service is designed. However, concerns with the users’ experience in services are growing, and mainly in Portugal we are starting to observe that the Institutions intend to improve and ameliorate their facilities in order to meet the users’ needs. The project described in this article was developed in one of the biggest Healthcare Institutions in the north of Portugal: Hospital de São João at Porto city. In this project, the main intention of the research was to understand which elements of the physical setting of the Institution had the most impact on the users’ experience and perceptions of the service under study. The methodologies applied to gather the data were questionnaires (applied to the patients of the institution), unstructured interviews (conducted with healthcare professionals) and direct observations performed in situ. The results revealed that the most problematic elements identified were the poor designed signage system that resulted in wayfinding difficulties for the users.

- Healthcare signage design: a review on recommendations for effective signing systemsPublication . Rodrigues, Rita; Coelho, Rita; Tavares, João Manuel R. S.This article provides a set of recommendations, selected from the systematic literature review carried out, regarding signage systems for healthcare institutions that can be used for designing or redesigning more competent signage systems. The signage systems in healthcare settings are usually poorly designed due to the expansion of the original facilities, a lack of awareness of existing guidelines by the developers, and a lack of agreement between the existing recommendations. There are several guidelines and recommendations available in the literature; however, each work was developed for specific cultural contexts, so there is a lack of uniformity among them. Hence, there is a need to uniformize the guidelines for signage design in healthcare, in order to provide supportive information for developers to build and implement effective and efficient signage systems. This study examined the available literature on the subject and established a set of guidelines organized in categories to help the design process. A literature review was conducted, and 34 selected publications were analyzed from which recommendations were created. A best practices manual was also studied and used as the analytical framework to establish the design categories of the developed recommendations. This review resulted in guidelines divided into nine design categories that should be considered in the design and implementation process of signage systems in healthcare facilities.
- Impact of telehealth on health outcomes and quality of life in the older adults population: a systematic reviewPublication . Fernandes, Gonçalo; Figueiredo, Teodora; Costa, Elísio; Coelho, Luís; Loyens, DirkBackground: The rapid aging of populations poses major challenges to health and social care systems. Supporting older adults in managing chronic conditions while promoting independence and quality of life requires innovative approaches that extend beyond senior institutional care. Telehealth has emerged as a promising approach to enhance access, continuity, and patient engagement. However, evidence regarding its effectiveness and best practices remains fragmented. Objectives: This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence on telehealth interventions for adults aged 65 years and older, focusing on their effects on health outcomes, quality of life, and well-being. Methods: A search across three databases in the last five years identified 37 eligible studies, and data analysis was guided by a comprehensive taxonomy. Interventions were diverse, spanning disease management, rehabilitation, health promotion, clinical decision support, and psychological support. Results: Reported benefits included improved physical function, better chronic disease control, greater health knowledge, and reductions in avoidable hospitalizations. Video-based programs showed greater effectiveness, while telephone-only interventions were most useful when combined with remote monitoring. Adherence was strengthened by professional guidance, caregiver support, and real-time feedback. Discussion: Despite encouraging findings, evidence remains inconsistent regarding quality-of-life outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and scalability across populations, with many studies limited by small samples, short duration, and methodological heterogeneity. Telehealth holds the potential to complement traditional care for older adults across multiple clinical domains, and future research must adopt consistent and comprehensive reporting practices to strengthen decision-making and ensure that this pathway evolves with patients’ needs.
