- A systematic literature review on maturity models for information systems in higher education institutionsPublication . João Vidal de Carvalho; Vidal de Carvalho, Joao; Pereira, Rui Humberto; Álvaro RochaMaturity models have been introduced over the last five decades as guides and references for information system (IS) management in organizations from different sectors. In the education sector, maturity models have also been used to evaluate higher education institutions (HEIs) across several dimensions, such as information and communication technology (ICT), management, process management, course curricula, course/HEI accreditation, e-/m-learning, online courses and pedagogical strategies. In fact, HEIs are faced with enormous complexity due to the specificity and quantity of their processes. Based on the guidelines concerning a methodology for a systematic literature review, the maturity models of different subareas of education are identified and categorized in this paper. For each maturity model associated with HEIs’ ISs, the appropriate methodology for development and validation is identified, as well as the scope, stages and their dimensional characteristics. This study highlights the need to develop an IS maturity model that supports HEIs in their core business activities and management.
- An aspect-oriented framework for orthogonal persistencePublication . Pereira, Rui Humberto; Perez-Schofield, J. Baltasar GarcíaThe life cycle of software applications in general is very short and with extreme volatile requirements. Within these conditions programmers need development tools and techniques with an extreme level of productivity. We consider the code reuse as the most prominent approach to solve that problem. Our proposal uses the advantages provided by the Aspect-Oriented Programming in order to build a reusable framework capable to turn both programmer and application oblivious as far as data persistence is concerned, thus avoiding the need to write any line of code about that concern. Besides the benefits to productivity, the software quality increases. This paper describes the actual state of the art, identifying the main challenge to build a complete and reusable framework for Orthogonal Persistence in concurrent environments with support for transactions. The present work also includes a successfully developed prototype of that framework, capable of freeing the programmer of implementing any read or write data operations. This prototype is supported by an object oriented database and, in the future, will also use a relational database and have support for transactions.
- Architecture of a maturity model for information systems in higher education institutions: multiple case study for dimensions identificationPublication . Pereira, Rui Humberto; Vidal De Carvalho, Joao; Rocha, ÁlvaroHigher education institutions (HEIs) are complex and dynamic organizations in terms of information management, forcing their information systems to respond to enormous challenges and threats. In order to evaluate the HEIs’ information systems, we propose the development of a maturity model capable of supporting the role of HEI’s managers, as well as accreditation agencies, in the assessment of the maturity of these systems, thus, promoting continuous improvement. In this paper, we present and discuss our proposal for an architecture of the maturity model being developed. This one is based on a two-dimensional architecture composed of vertical and horizontal dimensions. We selected a multi-case study approach, based on five Portuguese HEIs, and reviewed the literature to identify the dimensions. This case study was supported by interviews with experts from the selected HEI. The results of this research work were both encouraging and promising amongst the interviewed experts, revealing a high level of acceptance of the general model architecture, as well as positive expectations about its usefulness in the future. The development of our maturity model is carried out by following a formal methodology specially designed to support the construction of this type of model.

- Database evolution on an orthogonal persistent programming system: A semi-transparent approachPublication . Pereira, Rui Humberto; Perez-Schofield, J. Baltasar GarcíaIn this paper the problem of the evolution of an object-oriented database in the context of orthogonal persistent programming systems is addressed. We have observed two characteristics in that type of systems that offer particular conditions to implement the evolution in a semi-transparent fashion. That transparency can further be enhanced with the obliviousness provided by the Aspect-Oriented Programming techniques. Was conceived a meta-model and developed a prototype to test the feasibility of our approach. The system allows programs, written to a schema, access semi-transparently to data in other versions of the schema.
- Development methodology of a higher education institutions maturity modelPublication . Vidal de Carvalho, Joao; Pereira, Rui Humberto; Rocha, ÁlvaroMaturity models have been introduced, over the last four decades, as guides and references for Information System (IS) management in organizations from different sectors of activity. In the educational field, maturity models have also been used to deal with the enormous complexity and demand of Educational Information Systems. This article presents a research project that aims to develop a new comprehensive maturity model for the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) area. The HEIMM (Higher Education Institutions Maturity Model) will be developed to help HEI to address the complexity of there IS, as a useful tool for the demanding role of the management of these systems, and institutions as well. The HEIMM will have the peculiarity of congregating a set of key maturity influence factors and respective characteristics, enabling not only the assessment of the global maturity of the HEI IS but also the individual maturity of its different dimensions. In this article, we present the second phase of our project by discussing the methodology for the development of maturity models that will be adopted for the design of the HEIMM and the underlying reasons for its choice.
- DIMENSIONS OF A MATURITY MODEL FOR INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONSPublication . Rui Humberto Pereira; Pereira, Rui Humberto; João Vidal de Carvalho; Vidal de Carvalho, Joao; Álvaro RochaThe complexity of the information systems (IS) in the higher education institutions (HEI) has been continuously increasing during the last decades. Thus, managers need tools to evaluate the maturity of their IS, in order to continuously improve them. Additionally, the accreditation processes and rankings may also include organisational aspects in their criteria, in which the maturity models may be a useful tool. However, the existing literature is scarce on validated maturity models focused on the comprehensive management of complex HEI information systems. In previous papers, we came to the conclusion of the need and opportunity to propose a new maturity model to evaluate the IS of HEI, as well as the methodology to follow in the development of such model. In the present paper, we discuss our proposal for the architecture of the new model, synthetizing the state of the model that we intend to develop. This proposal is based on a two-dimensional approach, composed by vertical and horizontal dimensions of information. We believe that our approach, can mitigate the implications of the complexly issues of HEI on the maturity model to be developed. This proposal it the result of a multicase study, in which we identified the dimensions to consider in the model. In the further steps of our work, we will validate each of one of these dimensions and define the set of characteristics for each stage of maturity. Keywords: Stages of Growth, Maturity Models, Higher Education Institutions, Education Information Systems, Management.
