- Assessing assessmentPublication . Peres, Paula; Silva, Manuel; Tavares, CéliaIn the online environments some case studies we’ve developed and day-to-day experience have shown that, several times, online learning activities are promoted without considering the assessment of cognitive results that derive from those activities. Engaging students appears as the main justification. And when students’ involvement is not what it was expected? Should a student be penalized by not being a part of an online activity? Isn’t he/she also participating with the silent follow up that he/she chooses to do? Isn’t he/she learning? In the teacher’s point of view, the analysis of each of the students’ interventions may be a hard and time consuming task, especially in large classes. On the other hand, an automated process of the students’ interventions may be overrated in messages of social nature that show little cognitive activity. This context led to a study that aims to determine which are the most suitable activities for the learning process and objectives assessment. The research led into an innovative assessment model that seeks an alignment between objectives, softskills, assessment, content and other variables. The model that we suggest describes a solution for the elaboration of assessment questions by nature and expected results. It also suggests online activities that, for their innovative character, seek the students’ engagement, the objectives accomplishment and the balance between the teachers pedagogical, managerial, social and technical dimensions.
- Paradigm shift: From ePortfolios to PLEsPublication . Tavares, Célia; Oliveira, Luciana; Moreira Silva, ManuelA Personal Learning Environment (PLE) reflects, as a concept, the combination of the set of tools that we use around internet, helping to perceive what we are and what we learn. PLEs are able to bring together all learning experiences acquired in different contexts and mix those experiences in order to reflect ones knowledge. This paper aims at analyzing and exploring the advantages of a PLE, focusing specially on the use of ePortfolios in this context, by considering different approaches and exploring the relationship between the development of an e-portfolio and the students learning styles and multiple intelligences. This focus results from our perception that being aware of the students learning preferences is essential to enhance the quality of the teaching-learning environment, developing different kinds of activities and using different learning tools. In order to understand if and how those concepts (ePortfolios, learning styles and multiple intelligences) are related and to develop some understanding on an approach to correlate them, we have used some assessment tools and applied them in a case study in the area of translation and terminology leaning. The study, briefly described in this paper, has been a well succeeded one. However, we expect to foster further knowledge on the factors that should be changed during the teaching-learning process, by detecting and suggesting improvements. For that we will also reflect on what should be done to achieve better results when using ePortfolios, and consider other tools and approaches to enhance this process, such as social networks.
- B-Learning – An Institutional and Operational Development ToolPublication . Silva, Manuel; Peres, Paula; Tavares, Célia; Oliveira, Lucianae-Learning has been gaining a huge acceptance among educators, specially in Higher Education Institutions (HEI). This happens due to the exponential growth of the use of Internet and educational technologies that allowed deep transformations in the teaching-learning process and paradigm. Nowadays Internet has been reinforcing its role as a mediator-facilitator platform in education, allowing the creation of new contexts where learning opportunities can be expanded and potencially collaborative and where the resources are widely available. In this context, HEI have great responsibility in granting teacher and student access to suitable educational technologies, in providing the adequate means for the adoption of those tools and in the creation of opportunities for the dissemination of technical knowledge and pedagogical expertise amongst all intervenient. In fact, e-learning has become a competitive factor amongst institutions, and schools are confronted with the need to realign their mission, by developing and implementing different initiatives and projects so as to support and motivate teachers and to offer today’s students complementary means for the acquisition of knowledge and skills. In this paper we will analyse the case the Online Support Project (PAOL) and the approach followed by the School of Accounting and Administration of Oporto (ISCAP). The main goals of PAOL are to provide the implementation of computer assisted education at ISCAP in a blended learning model and to assist teachers and students in their adjustment to educational technologies, by developing training opportunities and resources, offering technical facilities and sharing good practice. The project began its activity in 2003 with WebCT, but soon changed its approach with the adoption of the open source platform Moodle and the integration of specialized staff to assist teachers and students on a daily basis. Since then, the b-learning model that PAOL initiated has been maturing the school’s educational culture, according to the teacher’s willingness or availability to integrate technology in the teaching-learning process. The use of Web technologies follows a similar trend to that of Roger’s diffusion of innovation theory, as it developed due to the enthusiasm of some innovators and grew steadily in adepts, having now 162 teachers who use Moodle on a regular basis. Teacher’s role in this process can be classified into different types, having, for instance, teachers that are keener to participate and integrate technology, teachers that only allow themselves to participate if the experience is proven successful by others and teachers that are reluctant to participate in any form. It is important to analyse the impact of these roles in the institutional development of b-learning so that we can develop new solutions and approaches that better meet the expectations of the institution. Thus, this paper will focus on the knowledge acquired throughout the experience in the use of Moodle by PAOL at ISCAP throughout the years (2003-2009), as well as the collaborative and cooperative relationships that have been established between teachers, students and the use of b-learning educational approaches and technology.
- Enhancing reflexivity and technology in translation learning: case study on the use of ePortfolio as a training environmentPublication . Tavares, Célia; Albuquerque, Alexandra; Silva, Manuel; Instituto Politécnico do Porto. Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração do PortoIn this paper we describe a casestudy of an experiment on how reflexivity and technology can enhance learning, by using ePorfolios as a training environment to develop translation skills. Translation is today a multiskilled job and translators need to assure their clients a good performance and quality, both in language and in technology domains. In order to accomplish it, for the translator all the tasks and processes he develops appear as crucial, being pretranslation and posttranslation processes equally important as the translation itself, namely as far as autonomy, reflexive and critical skills are concerned. Finally, the need and relevance for collaborative tasks and networks amongst virtual translation communities, led us to the decision of implementing ePortfolios as a tool to develop the requested skills and extend the use of Internet in translation, namely in terminology management phases, for the completion of each task, by helping students in the management of the projects deadlines, improving their knowledge on the construction and management of translation resources and deepening their awareness about the concepts related to the development and usability of ePorfolios.
- Enhancing young Male learners’ motivation for language learningPublication . Ribeiro, Sandra; Tavares, Célia; Mesquita, AnabelaAt a time when mass education system predominates on all levels throughout Europe, it is necessary to acknowledge that everyone is unique and, thus learns differently. As such, the European Project Love Language and More (under the Leonardo Da Vinci program) proposes to address the uniqueness of young male learners within a language learning context and implement, culturally adapt and test a developed Handbook and a Toolbox to offer language course providers and their trainers and tutors an appealing approach for young male language learners by introducing learning contents which we believe reflect male interests. This paper seeks to present the results of the implementation and cultural adaptation process of the language learning methodologies and activities proposed by the Portuguese partners of the Love Language and More Project and address and discuss young male learner’s reactions to ICT-based activities within the Language Learning Classroom.
- Terminology Management for Social Media Communication During Covid 19 Pandemic: A Case Study with a Portuguese Higher Education InstitutionPublication . Pinto, Susana; Tavares, Célia; Moreira Silva, ManuelThe process of attracting new students is a constant challenge for Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is challenging because it implies the definition of a communication strategy that uses both traditional and digital tactics to promote the institution and its educational offer. Considering the constraints resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, HEIs had to change their strategies and, in a short period, create digital communication mechanisms to facilitate new students' access to relevant information about the institution. This paper intends thus to determine and evaluate which are the predominant factors in seeking information about a degree in business sciences, specifically regarding the Porto Accounting and Business School in Portugal. To do that, we will consider the various factors that tend to influence the decision-making process of choosing a higher education degree, namely: the institutional website, social networks (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), other contact mechanisms (live chat, e-mail, text messages, ZOOM videoconference) and alumni testimonials. This study will also consider the role of terminology and positive language to obtain a successful communication strategy for social media. The analysis of these factors, combined with research developed with a focus group of high school students' graduates to assess their online preferences, will allow the presentation of a digital communication proposal whose purpose is to attract and retain new students. This proposal will consider the role of a strategic terminology management approach to capture students' attention when responding to their social media preferences. This paper results from the perception that being aware of the students' online preferences and communication skills and needs is essential to enhance the quality of the digital communication that HEIs promote in social media channels, especially in a time frame as specific and multifaceted as the one that we are currently experiencing.
- DIGITOOLS – Innovative tools for enhancing e-learning solutions in universitiesPublication . Moreira Silva, Manuel; Terra, Ana Lúcia; Tavares, Célia; Lopes, Cristina; Valente, Iolanda; Gonçalves, Maria José Angélico; Bernardes, OscarMethodology of the data preparation: 1. Data from each country survey was exported to IBM SPSS (using the syntax file provided by Limesurvey when exporting data to SPSS). 2. Qualitative variables Q00 and Q02 were automatically recorded into numerical form. 3. A binary variable “Completed” was created from the “submitdate”, using “recode into different variable” (Missing ->0, ELSE->1) to mark the complete answers from the incomplete 4. All string variables with Likert scales were transformed into numerical variables, using the “automatic recode” feature of IBM SPSS. Options ``Treat blank as user missing” and “Use same recording scheme” were activated. Then, all remaining codes for missing values or non-available data were coded with SYSMIS using “Recode into the same variable”. 5. The three questions S01c, L01c, and T02m had the scale of answers with an inverted logic. It was necessary to create new variables inverting the scale, using “Recode into different variables”. (1->5, 2->4, 4->2, 5->1, ELSE-> copy) 6. Measure of the numerical variables was corrected. 7. The labels of the questions were simplified (removing the answer options and non necessary text) 8. New variables for the constructs were computed using “Compute variable” with the mean of the variables that contribute to each construct in each group. (The syntax file “Data preparation.sps” can be used to automatize the procedure of data preparation. Just change the path in FILE=’…’ to your full directory path. The formulas for building the constructs are in lines 80-372.)
