Publication . Mesquita, Cristina; Lopes, Sofia; Neves, Inês; Silva, Daniela; Araújo, Filipa; Vitorino, Alice; Lopes, Patrícia; Moreira, Excelsa; Carneiro, Ana
Background and Objectives Patients with fibromyalgia often feel disable in daily function and admit a great impact in quality of life due to their health condition. The recommendations of an exercise program are important, because individuals with FM are often inactive and physically deconditioned, they fear that exercise exacerbates symptoms. The exercise programs for individuals with fibromyalgia have poor adhesion primarily by the need for equipment, facilities and travel, and the presence of depressive symptoms. All these factors are relevant and take into account when designing the home-based exercise program. The objective of this study was investigate the effect of a home-based exercise program in disability caused by neck pain in patients with fibromyalgia.
  • Cross-cultural adaptation and measurement properties of the Portuguese version of the Ankle Instability Instrument
Publication . Silva, Diogo C. F.; Vilas-Boas, J. Paulo; Mesquita, Cristina; Maia, José; Santos, Rubim; Peixoto, Tiago André Teixeira; Brito, Nuno; Pinheiro De Sousa, Andreia Sofia
Chronic ankle instability is one of the most common clinical conditions in the general population, especially in adult athletes. The cross-cultural adaptation of self-reported questionnaires that identify and classify this condition contribute to criteria standardization in research but also in rehabilitation. Aim of Study. To validate the Ankle Instability Instrument to the Portuguese population and to investigate its psychometric properties. Material and Methods. Linguistic and semantic equivalence of the original version of the Ankle Instability Instrument to the Portuguese population was firstly performed. The Portuguese version of the Ankle Instability Instrument was then applied to 81 higher education adult students, with (n = 59) and without history of ankle sprain (n = 22). Participants were evaluated two times with an interval of one week to assess the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Ankle Instability Instrument. Results. In the reliability of binary responses based on the test retest, the tetrachoric correlation coefficient ranged from 0.99 to 1.00. In addition, the Kuder–Richardson coefficient was 0.79 suggesting good internal consistency. Conclusions. Test-retest showed an almost perfect match in all answers between the two moments, which seem to be related to sample characteristics. The internal consistency value was similar to the one obtained in the original version. The Portuguese version of the Ankle Instability Instrument is highly reliable and can be used in clinical practice.
  • Occupational health: does compliance with physical activity recommendations have a preventive effect on musculoskeletal symptoms in computer workers?
Publication . Moreira, Sara; Salomé Ferreira, Maria; Begoña Criado, Maria; Machado, Jorge; Mesquita, Cristina; Lopes, Sofia; Santos, Paula Clara
A lack of physical activity in computer workers (CW) can contribute to the development of musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS). Aim: (i) Evaluate MSS over a 12 month and 7 days period, (ii) determine physical activity (PA) levels and compliance with World Health Organization (WHO) PA recommendations, and (iii) assess the relationship between compliance with WHO PA recommendations and MSS. A cross-sectional observational study comprising 119 computer workers. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was used to evaluate the MSS and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to analyse the perception of the level of PA. MSS occurred in the lumbar region (56.3%), neck (43.7%), and shoulders (39.5%). 44.7% of the participants reported a low level of PA. The percentage of compliance was similar among women and men (62.2% vs. 58.5%, respectively). Negative correlations were found between pain intensity and metabolic equivalent values. The participants who followed the WHO PA recommendations reported a lower frequency of MSS compared to those who did not, but the differences were not statistically significant. It was possible to conclude that computer workers presented a higher frequency of MSS in the lower back, neck, and shoulders. Regarding the level of PA, participants were mostly classified as low. Participants who followed the WHO PA recommendations reported lower MSS than those who did not. This finding could be important in obtaining successful programs that promote health-oriented physical activity in this group of workers.
  • Portuguese version of the standardized Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire: cross cultural and reliability
Publication . Mesquita, Cristina; Ribeiro, José Carlos; Moreira, Pedro
The self-administered questionnaires are fundamental for clinical assessment and research. The accessibility and constant use of recognized questionnaires in different languages facilitates the compilation of reliable data in international multicentre studies. The purpose of this study was to carry out a cross-cultural adaptation of the standardized Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire for Portuguese workers and to investigate the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version. Sixty warehouse workers completed the questionnaire booklet containing the newly translated version of the standardized Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire (NMQ) and the Oswestry disability index (ODI). After a week, to test reliability, all the individuals completed the standardized Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire for a second time. The study is in accordance with the ERGHO guidelines for cross cultural adaptation. The Kendall’s tau-b correlation coefficient demonstrated existence of association to the upper back region variable “last 7 days” (0.350 to p < 0.01), low back region variable “last 7 days” (0.290 to p < 0.05), and low back region variable “limitations in daily activities” (0.479 to p < 0.01). These results showed a moderate correlation between the NMQ and ODI. Through the Kappa agreement correlation coefficient, we observe that the majority of the correlation coefficients were between 0.8 and 1, showing the existence of a strong to a very strong association, indicative of good levels for test-retest reliability. The Kuder-Richarson coefficient of reliability showed a correlation coefficient of 0.855 indicative of good internal consistency. The Portuguese version of the standardized Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire for Portuguese workers seems to be valid revealing good coefficients of reliability.
  • The influence of an aquatic exercise program on balance in patients with ankylosing spondylitis
Publication . Ferreira, Margarida; Mesquita, Cristina; Santos, Paula Clara; Borges, João; Graça, Maria; Henriques, Ana; Lopes, Sofia
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease that leads to a limitation of mobility, which can cause postural deficits and progressive loss of balance. Aquatic exercise improves this health condition. The objetive is to verify the influence of an aquatic exercise program, on balance and functionality, in individuals with AS. Pre-experimental study carried out on 6 individuals with AS. All individuals were assessed at baseline (M0) and 12 weeks after the intervention (M1) using the Bath indices (BASMI, BASFI and BASDAI) and the balance assessment protocol (‘Body Sway’) by the Physiosensing Platform. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Program Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 26. Were used descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon test to compare M0 and M1. The significance value was 0.05. We verify improvements in BASMI (P = 0.046), BASFI (P = 0.042) and BASDAI (P = 0.027) scores. Through the analysis of the center of pressure variables, there were no statistically significant differences, between moments, in the protocol. However, when assessing balance, in the anteroposterior mean distance in both the protocol (eyes open) and in the protocol (eyes closed), in the root mean square in both protocols and in mediolateral mean velocity, only in the protocol (eyes open), there was a slight decrease in the median value. The present study suggests that the specific aquatic exercise program, may influence balance and improve functionality in a population with AS. Therefore, the Bath indices translate improvements in the symptoms and functionalities of these participants.
  • Feasibility, clinical efficacy, and maternal outcomes of a remote exercise program in pregnant women with obesity: The GROB randomized control pilot study
Publication . Bernardo, Diana; Bobadilla-Agouborde, Carolina; Festas, Clarinda; Carvalho, Carlos; Abdalla, Pedro Pugliesi; Amezcua-Prieto, Carmen; Naia-Entonado, Zeltia; Mesquita, Cristina; Mota, Jorge; Santos, Paula Clara
Obesity is common in women of reproductive age and increases the risk during pregnancy. Exercising during this period reduces health complications. Home e-health programs are effective in overcoming exercise barriers as pregnant women use technology and the internet for health information. Methods: A single-blind randomized controlled feasibility study with pregnant women with obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥≥30 kg/m22) was conducted in the University Hospital Center of São João between January and April 2023. Pregnant women were randomized to a control group with standard care and to an experimental group with 8-week remote exercise program using a Phoenix® biofeedback device. Feasibility outcome measures were recruitment rate (≥≥35%), loss to follow-up (≤≤15%), and program fidelity (≥≥1 session/week). Secondary outcomes were evaluated through Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire, Oswestry Index on Disability, and weight assessments at baseline and at the end of the program. Results: Of the 63 eligible participants, 24 (38.1%) were successfully randomized and completed the baseline assessment. Of these, 3 (4.8%) from experimental group did not perform the initial onboarding. The control group had 8.3% of follow-up losses and for the experimental group there were no follow-up losses. Program fidelity (mean ≥≥1 session/week) was fulfilled by 66.7% of successfully randomized participants. Regarding secondary outcomes assessed between baseline and the 8th week, experimental group compared to control group had higher levels of physical activity for sports activities, a lower level of inactivity, and lower disability rates caused by low back pain. Conclusions: Based on the recruitment rate, losses to follow-up, and fidelity rate, the GROB (obesity in pregnancy) study was deemed feasible and worthy of consideration for a larger study. Moreover, the GROB study has the potential to improve maternal outcomes by reducing sedentarism and disability caused by low back pain.

  • An Exercise Program Improves Health-Related Quality of Life of Workers
    Publication . Mesquita, Cristina; Ribeiro, J. C.; Moreira, P.
Low back problems are associated with decreased quality of life. Specific exercises can improve quality of life, resulting in better professional performance and functionality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of following a 21-month exercise program on the quality of life of warehouse workers. The population included 557 male warehouse workers from a food distribution company in Oporto, Portugal. Upon application of the selection criteria, 249 workers were deemed eligible, which were randomized into two groups (125 in the intervention group and 124 in the control group). Then, subjects were asked to volunteer for the study, the sample being formed by 229 workers (112 in the intervention group and 117 in the control group). All subjects completed the SF-36 questionnaire prior to beginning the program and on the 11th and 21st months following it. The exercises were executed in the company facilities once a day for 8 min. Data were analyzed using SPSS® 17.0 for Windows®. After 11 months of following the exercise program, there was an increase in all scores for the experimental group, with statistically significant differences in the dimensions physical functioning (0.019), bodily pain (0.010), general health (0.004), and rolephysical (0.037). The results obtained at the end of the study (21 months) showed significant improvements in the dimensions physical functioning (p = 0.002), rolephysical (p = 0.007), bodily pain (p = 0.001), social functioning (p = 0.015), role-emotional (p = 0.011), and mental health (p = 0.001). In the control group all dimensions showed a decrease in mean scores. It can be concluded that the implementation of a low back specific exercise program has changed positively the quality of life of warehouse workers.
