  • Parkinson’s disease and cognitive-motor dual-task: is motor prioritization possible in the early stages of the disease?

    The authors aimed to compare the postural phase ofgait initiation under single-task (gait initiation) and dual-task (gaitinitiation plus Stroop test) conditions in healthy subjects and insubjects with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in the early stages (Hoehnand Yahr scale<3). The postural phase of gait initiation wasassessed through the centre of pressure in single and dual task in10 healthy subjects and 9 with PD. The analysis indicated that inthe early stages of PD, an additional cognitive task did not affectthe displacement of the gait initiation. No significant effectsoccurred between the groups and within-subjects (p>.05). Also,no interaction was found between the groups and the conditions(single- and dual-task). Differences were found in the duration ofthe mediolateral postural phase (pD.003), which was higher inPD subjects than in healthy subjects. The findings suggest thatsubjects in the early stages of PD prioritize gait initiation, as theirmotor performance was similar to that of healthy subjects.
  • Virtual reality interventions to improve function after stroke

    Stroke is the most common neurological disease and one of the most common fatal diseases in the world. Stroke patients suffer from several physical, cognitive, and sensory complications that impact their functionality and independence in daily activities and, consequently, can reduce their quality of life. Given this impact, it is important to assess the various ways to ensure effective and satisfactory rehabilitation for the stroke person. Virtual reality has been proven in recent times as a promising tool in stroke motor rehabilitation, being effective with its immersive elements and, at the same time, motivating patients. With all this in mind, this chapter aimed to analyze the current scientific evidence of Virtual Reality intervention for functional rehabilitation of stroke patients.
  • Autoavaliação e avaliação pelos pares: relato de prática pedagógica no processo de ensino aprendizagem PBL na licenciatura em Terapia Ocupacional da ESS IPP

    Nos modelos de ensino aprendizagem, centrados no estudante tal como é o caso do Problem Based Learning (PBL) aplicado na licenciatura em Terapia Ocupacional (TO) da ESS, é preconizada a participação dos discentes no sistema de avaliação como meio de promover o próprio processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Assim, é entendida uma avaliação para a aprendizagem, onde existe uma oportunidade para uma conexão relevante entre a aprendizagem e a avaliação. A utilização de formas colaborativas de aprendizagem, tais como a autoavaliação e a avaliação pelos pares, possibilita ao professor compreender melhor como é que o estudante está a aprender e consequentemente ajustar o planeamento pedagógico. Por outro lado, proporciona ao estudante um maior foco na identificação de competências a desenvolver, promovendo a reflexão, a metacognição e uma participação e envolvimento pró-ativos. Neste relato, mais qualitativo, de prática pedagógica pretende-se partilhar/expressar o processo de autoavaliação e avaliação pelos pares que tem vindo a ser utilizado pelos estudantes de TO na ESS IPP e analisar as respetivas vantagens e desafios deste método, numa perspetiva tanto dos estudantes como dos tutores.

  • The influence of pauses on the fatigue of upper limb muscles during the task of ironing

    The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of position and pauses on muscle activity and fatigue during the task of ironing. Ten female participants performed the task of ironing in two different positions (standing and sitting) for 10 min each with a 1-min pause at the end of each task. Muscle activity and fatigue from the upper trapezium, anterior deltoid, and pectoralis major were analyzed using surface electromyography. The results showed that the positions had no significant influence on muscle activity; nevertheless, they had significant influence on muscular fatigue. In addition, the pauses were possibly beneficial in decreasing the muscle fatigue, but the results were not conclusive.
  • Cognitive predictors of balance in Parkinson’s disease

    Postural instability is one of the most incapacitating symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) and appears to be related to cognitive deficits. This study aims to determine the cognitive factors that can predict deficits in static and dynamic balance in individuals with PD. A sociodemographic questionnaire characterized 52 individuals with PD for this work. The Trail Making Test, Rule Shift Cards Test, and Digit Span Test assessed the executive functions. The static balance was assessed using a plantar pressure platform, and dynamic balance was based on the Timed Up and Go Test. The results were statistically analysed using SPSS Statistics software through linear regression analysis. The results show that a statistically significant model based on cognitive outcomes was able to explain the variance of motor variables. Also, the explanatory value of the model tended to increase with the addition of individual and clinical variables, although the resulting model was not statistically significant The model explained 25-29% of the variability of the Timed Up and Go Test, while for the anteroposterior displacement it was 23-34%, and for the mediolateral displacement it was 24-39%. From the findings, we conclude that the cognitive performance, especially the executive functions, is a predictor of balance deficit in individuals with PD.
  • Handgrip strength time profile and frailty: an exploratory study

    This study aims to explore the use of force vs. time data obtained from an isometric handgrip test to match a frailty state based on the TFI score. BodyGrip, a novel prototype system, is used for handgrip strength over 10 s time interval tests. A cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic sample of community-dwelling elderly women was conducted. The force/time data collected from the dominant handgrip strength test, together with the Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) test results, were used to train artificial neural networks. Different models were tested, and the frailty matching of TFI scores reached a minimum accuracy of 75%. Despite the small sample size, the BodyGrip system appears to be a promising tool for exploring new frailty-related features. The adopted strategy foresees ultimately configuring the system to be used as an expedite mode for identifying individuals at risk, allowing an easy, quick, and frequent person-centered care approach. Additionally, it is suitable for following up of the elderly in particular, and it may assume a relevant role in the mitigation of the increase in frailty evolution during and after the imposed isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further use of the system will improve the robustness of the artificial neural network algorithm.
  • Aplicação do Relation Play em crianças com perturbação autista

    Este estudo teve como objectivo verificar a eficácia de um programa de Relation play em crianças com Perturbação Autista, incidindo na comunicação não verbal e de interacção social. A amostra foi constituída por 3 crianças com Perturbação Autista. Foi realizado um estudo de caso quantitativo de carácter pré-experimental do tipo ABA. Os participantes foram submetidos a um programa de Relation Play constituído por 13 sessões, duas vezes por semana. O instrumento utilizado foi uma lista de verificação de comportamentos. Verificaram--‐se melhorias em alguns aspectos da comunicação não verbal e interacção social.

  • Playing to improve memory: how serious games and gamification have contributed to the neurocognitive rehabilitation of the elderly

    The phenomenon of global population aging incites a change in the thinking and practice of health professionals, who are increasingly looking for effective techniques aimed at this age group. Among the various biological, social, and psychological changes that occur in the aging process, changes in cognitive processes are one of the most prevalent manifestations. Thus, motivating and effective proposals should be implemented to train and rehabilitate these functions. Among these proposals, health-centered gamification has become a major trend and is increasingly studied. The authors propose in this chapter to discuss gamification in the rehabilitation of cognitive functions, especially memory in the elderly population, presenting the advantages and potentialities of serious games and gamification against the current scenario of cognitive stimulation, which requires innovative solutions to increase motivation and involvement of the elderly in the process.
