- Portuguese social solidarity cooperatives between recovery and resilience in the context of covid-19: preliminary results of the COOPVID ProjectPublication . Meira, Deolinda; Azevedo, Ana; Castro, Conceição; Tomé, Brízida; Rodrigues, Ana C.; Bernardino, Susana; Martinho, Ana Luisa; Malta, Mariana Curado; Pinto, Agostinho Sousa; Coutinho, Bruno; Vasconcelos, Paulo; Fernandes, Tiago Pimenta; Bandeira, Ana M.; Rocha, Ana Paula; Silva, Marlene; Gomes, MafaldaCovid-19 posed several challenges to all organisations in general and to social solidarity cooperatives in particular. However, the challenges faced by these cooperatives have unique features arising from their special characteristics compared to other types of cooperatives. Therefore it is vital to study these challenges and the impacts of covid-19. This study has as main goal to understand those challenges and their impact. An exploratory study was undertaken by applying 11 interviews to 11 social solidarity cooperatives. The cooperatives were chosen to be heterogeneous among the existent cooperatives in Portugal. This study corresponds to the first phase of a project that is still underway. This article presents the main results of the content analysis of the data collected from the interviews. Data show cooperatives could promptly adapt and continue their mission under pressure from the pandemic despite the first difficulties encountered in a new and unknown situation, showing a capacity to adapt and serve their members. However, these members were also submitted to several increasing and new challenges. The adaptations were possible due to legal changes in the work organisation law, from layoff to telework, government support involving financial programs, VAT, and other tax relaxation, as well as due to human resources reorganisation and the cooperatives’ staff positive attitude towards the difficulties (both leaders and general workers). Differences between the social solidarity cooperatives under study concerning digital technologies showed that those already having some infrastructure had minor adapting difficulties.

- Human resources development: engaging employability skills into curriculum design and deliveryPublication . Meirinhos, Viviana; Rodrigues, Ana C.; Martins, DoraThere is widespread recognition that nowadays human resources development is not an exclusive responsibility of employing organizations. People individually have to assume the task of preparing themselves to the employment world, and for higher education institutions this has risen to be one of the top priorities. This paper presents a case study of how curriculum design and delivery may support university-business communication, and consequently facilitate the development of employability skills. Employability skills are in this work conceptualised as all the technical and non-technical skills that are desirable to have in order to be proficient in a specific labour market. Three different experiences on a higher education course are described: a project based curricula, an educational-professional network, and a curricular individual development program. With specific aims each, all the three educational strategies work complementarily as drivers for the alignment of students’ development with labour specific needs. Together these curriculum design and delivery options are based on two fundamental foundations, university-business cooperation and students´ engagement in skills’ selection and development.

- Organizational culture in cooperatives: an exploratory approachPublication . Ferreira, Marisa R.; Rodrigues, Ana C.; Marques, Cristina P.In recent years, organizational culture has become one of the common themes of interest of scientific and academic research. Each organization has its own unique cultural identity. Based on the recognition that organizational culture is considered important to an organization’s results, and social economy organizations are concerned with improving managerial practices and results, our objective is to study organizational culture in cooperatives: identifying their organizational culture as a specific type of organization of the social economy, recognized as increasingly important economic agents; and in doing so, explore the usage of a widely known model, the Competing Values Framework (Quinn & Rohrbaugh 1983). Three cooperatives were studied. Their presidents were interviewed, and a questionnaire was applied to cooperative members to obtain demographic and organizational culture data. Differences between the cooperatives’ cultural profiles seem to be consistent with both the circumstances of Portuguese social economy organizations (SEOs), and to the organizations’ uniqueness regarding their trade, focuses, and history. International firm trends were compared with this study’s results, and also appear to be explained by the SEO’s management practices evolution standpoint: lack of structured way of working, and the need to improvise and innovate in order to get things done. The importance of our research is held in the fact that social economy, and the cooperative movement in particular, has a developing importance in the expansion of many economies, the lack of literature on culture in SEOs, and the exploratory usage of a well-known model of management literature in cooperatives.

- A competing values framework approach on growth and performance in micro firmsPublication . Rodrigues, Ana C.; Caetano, AntónioThis study aims to analyze and compare four micro-firms' organizational culture, evaluated through the Competing Values Framework (Quinn & Rohbaugh, 1983). Data was collected in 2011 and 2013 in firms selling the same type of software and providing the same kind of services, focusing on the years between 2008-2011. Findings point to somewhat different results of micro-firms, when comparing to other samples in the literature. Suggestions for future research are given.
- An organizational culture approach to performance in information technology micro-firmsPublication . Rodrigues, Ana C.; Caetano, AntónioThis study aims to analyze and compare micro-firms’ organizational culture related to organizational performance. A case study methodology was used based on four firms, competitors among themselves in the Information Technology business, focusing on the years between 2008-2013. Findings pointed out many similarities to larger firms, but some specificities of micro-firms were found and propositions were defined: clan culture predominance is related to best performing micro-firms; the configuration of several culture types seemed to be the most suitable for obtaining good organizational results, provided that they do not focus only on hierarchy and market types of culture; the market culture predominance perception by employees is associated with low job satisfaction; and, after a certain time in business, micro-firms, as do larger companies, seek to standardize and control processes. Recognizing that organizational culture is considered important to firms’ results, this study sheds some light on that important factor for micro-firms.
