  • Is there a film in this text? The commercial success of Rubem Fonseca's cinematic literature
Publication . Lopes, Helena Isabel da Silva
This dissertation focuses on the language of film in Rubem Fonseca’s literary fiction. Fonseca’s literature’s complicity with the language of cinema is examined through the appropriation of mass film narrative conventions, the observance of screenplay guidelines and the literary recreation of an illusionist rhetoric of film characterized by fluidity, transparency and immediacy. Effective in producing speed and readability, Fonseca’s assimilation of a cinematic rhetoric subsumable in David Bordwell’s notion of continuity system constitutes a cornerstone of his modality of literary realism, sometimes capable of producing effects of real. Unveiled by means of a transmedial and intercultural approach, the psychological operations of mental imagery during the consumption of this intermedial artifact classified as cinematic literature in the age of post-cinema are described. Fueled by cinema, the accessibility of Fonseca’s broadbrow fiction is framed in a postmodernist protocol of reading capable of crossing the border between high and lowbrow audiences, thus closing a sociologic gap between elites and masses. After assessing the commercial success of Fonseca’s books in Portugal and Brazil, the monography proceeds to exhort publishing houses to extend the marketing of his books to low and middlebrow audiences, with a view to fulfilling the sales potential this research finds in Fonseca’s ingeniously salable transmedial recipe. A strategy for the measurement of the author’s value as an intangible asset of Sextante, Rubem Fonseca’s Portuguese publishing house, is proposed. The microeconomic benefits of such monetization of Intellectual Capital for the company are highlighted. The benefits of increasing the sales of Fonseca’s broadbrow literature at the macroeconomic level are also emphasized with regard to the generation of wealth and increase of sustainability through the extension of literacy.
  • Backpacking culture: digital nomads in Porto - brief approach to Selina case study
Publication . Barroso, Catarina Fernandes; Moreira Silva, Manuel
As globalization provided a more efficient path to mobility meanwhile facilitating the search for information, the urge to travel and seek new cultures became intense. People from around the world engaged in the act of traveling more deeply than what was known previously. The backpacker phenomenon evolved into a lifestyle, as being a tourist simply was not fulfilling for this new generation of travellers; an evolution of Cohen’s “drifters”. Backpacking culture has been growing exponentially over the years, becoming the answer for young, creative, and adventurous individuals to find freedom and life purpose. Consequently, as digital transformation takes over due to a market in need of change and innovation, the work regulation adapts itself to flexible schedules, remote work and begins to value change in organizational culture as a major factor inside each business. Moreover, as digital nomadism progresses, spreads a high concern from companies to extend their vision and include this profile as their workers. Through the creation of cowork spaces, the objective is to develop an environment of mutual help, embracing new connections and, above all, strengthen productivity. With this in mind, this article aims to briefly present and analyze a case study - Selina -, as an example of innovation and creativity in the hospitality business. This is a company that targets backpackers and digital nomads, creating a market strategy suitable not only for them but locals as well, by enhancing intercultural exchange. Our focus will be an approach to the creation and organization of Selina, the beliefs of its’ employees and values inside the firm, and how that internal culture is in consensus with that of the audience they wish to capture. Furthermore, following the same line of thinking and on a detail attempt, understanding how the company appropriates itself and encourages new behaviors (coworking) as a way to attract clients for its business.
  • Condição feminina no império colonial português
Publication .

  • From here to diversity: globalization and intercultural dialogues
Publication . Centro de Estudos Interculturais
From Here to Diversity: Globalization and Intercultural Dialogues sees interculturalism as movement, transit, travel, the dynamics between cultures. Contemporary intercultural travel is a global journey, a circumnavigation at the speed of light that underwrites all the comings and goings, the departures and arrivals, the transmissions and receptions that are implicit in this title. Hence, From Here to Diversity examines the motivations, characteristics and implications of cultural interactions in their perpetual movement, devoid of spatial or temporal borders, in a dangerous but stimulating indefinition of limits. In the contemporary intercultural dialogue, new voices are making themselves heard, as valuable sources of study: the voices of women; non-occidentals; the non-powerful; forgotten narratives of a past that was as intercultural as the present (after all, what is colonialism other than a perverse form of interculturality?); global entertainment; tourism; oral literature; diaries; mythical narratives; the cinema; ethnography; new teachings, among so many others. Because this project is also intercultural at its source and subject, From Here to Diversity: Globalization and Intercultural Dialogues adds to the coherence of the project by including contributions from the most wide-ranging backgrounds and nationalities, without fear of the alterity that, after all, we propose to study.
