Publication .

  • International Conference on Mathematical Analysis and Applications in Science and Engineering – Book of Extended Abstracts
Publication . Pinto, C.M.A.; Mendonça, Jorge; Babo, Lurdes; Baleanu, Dumitru
The present volume on Mathematical Analysis and Applications in Science and Engineering - Book of Extended Abstracts of the ICMASC’2022 collects the extended abstracts of the talks presented at the International Conference on Mathematical Analysis and Applications in Science and Engineering – ICMA2SC'22 that took place at the beautiful city of Porto, Portugal, in June 27th-June 29th 2022 (3 days). Its aim was to bring together researchers in every discipline of applied mathematics, science, engineering, industry, and technology, to discuss the development of new mathematical models, theories, and applications that contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and practice. Authors proposed research in topics including partial and ordinary differential equations, integer and fractional order equations, linear algebra, numerical analysis, operations research, discrete mathematics, optimization, control, probability, computational mathematics, amongst others. The conference was designed to maximize the involvement of all participants and will present the state-of- the-art research and the latest achievements.
  • Matemática I
Publication .
  • Low-Cost Videos for Learning Mathematics by Teaching
Publication . Caldeira, Amélia; Lopes, S. O.; Figueiredo, Isabel; Costa, Alexandra R.
Technology plays an important role in everyday life and can be used in education. Video is a source of material that can play an important role in the teaching and learning field. Using videos engages students, aids student retention of knowledge, motivates interest in the subject matter, and illustrates the relevance of many concepts. In this chapter, the authors describe two teaching experiences involving videos, where the students made a video about solving a concrete mathematical problem. In this video, the students should explain the problem resolution to their colleagues (playing the role of teacher). The results of the impact of this kind of project in the students' motivation are also presented.
  • Control Banding applied to engineered nanomaterials: Short review
Publication . Pereira, Andréa; Meira Castro, Ana C.; Baptista, J. Santos
Control Banding (CB) methodology is one of the approaches developed on assessment and management of the risk of hazardous substances exposure. In the last decade, several CB tools were developed regarding workers’ exposure to nanomaterials. This review intends to identify CB methods already applied in occupational settings in industrial activities and laboratories with exposure to nanoma- terials, aiming to help the selection of a CB tool to be applied in a specific scenario, allowing to achieve most reliable results. The results of the data base search revealed seven CB tools applied to laboratories and industrial activities. Although the similarities, these tools present differences that may affect the con- sistency of the resulting conclusions. CB methodologies allow to define priorities in applying adequate control measures. However, the results also indicate that workplaces’ measurements and its comparison with CB results are valuable to support possible future adjustments to seek more consistent results.
  • Health effects on workers exposed to engineered nanomaterials: Short review
Publication . Pereira, André; Meira Castro, Ana C.; Costa, J. Torres; Baptista, J. Santos
The huge increase in the nanotechnology industry has also resulted in an enormous growth in the number of workers exposure in nanoparticles. Consequently, researches has been carried out regarding health and safety risks of engineered nanomaterials and the regulation of potencial new hazards is a global concern. However little is known about the impact of engineered nanomaterials in human health. This short review purpose is to identify the potencial human health effects resulting from occupational exposure to engineered nanomaterials, supported on data base search. the article search revealed 5 studies on health performed in work-places and 14 in vitro and in vivo studies. Lung inflammatory effects, cytoxicity, oxidative stress and DNA damage were the most referred as potencial health effects. However, more studies are still needed to obtain reliable data about nanomaterials effects on human health.
  • The use of prescribed fire in Portugal as a tool for forest management
Publication . Meira Castro, Ana C.; Meixido, João Paulo
Prescribed fires in forest areas are frequently used in most Mediterranean countries as a preventive technique to avoid several wildfires in the summer season. In Portugal this forest management pratice is a common tool used for biota control and for reduction of forest fuel mass availability, and therefore to promote the reduce of wildfire occurrence and a shorter fire suppression effort. Although the use of precribed fire has been shown to be beneficial - as annual statistical reports confirm the the decrease of wildfires accurrence has a direct relationship with the controlled fire practice - serious side effects, in some forest soil properties, were also reported. Taking in consideration the pros and cons, ICNF - the Portuguese Institute of Nature and Forest Conservation - still adopts the use of prescribed fires nowadays as a tool for the maintenance of forest sustainability. In this work, we describe the use of prescribed fire in Portugal under a forest management perspective and we reflect over the evolution of the term forest sustainability in the last decades and how it played an important role on forest management options.
