- Analysis and improvement in the Electrical Discharge Machining process used on the manufacturing of moulds for plastics injection mouldingPublication . Costa, A; Pinto Ferreira, Luís; Silva, F. J. G.; Sá, José Carlos; Pereira, Teresa; Ávila, PauloDue to increasing competitiveness in the industry, companies will invariably adopt strategies to ensure that their employees continuously eliminate waste and create more value. This concept was applied at a company that designs, develops, and manufactures steel moulds for the injection of thermoplastics, with the purpose of implementing Lean thinking in the production sector, thus achieving the following objectives: organization of production; preparation of documents to support production, and standardization of graphite stock. Regarding the application of the 5S tool, an improvement in worker safety, and in cleaning was observed, which also led to a reduction in the time wasted when locating tools. Through the implementation of 5S auditing, enabling to verify an overall improvement, from a rating of 35% in the first audit to 85% in the subsequent audit. The tools implemented allowed for improvements in communication between sectors, leading to increased productivity and productive autonomy. Finally, graphite stock was standardized by means of Kanban.
- Analysis and Improvement of the Packaging Sector of an Industrial CompanyPublication . Alves, Diogo; Ferreira, Luís Pinto; Pereira, Maria Teresa; Sá, José Carlos; Silva, Francisco J. G.; Fernandes, N.O.Manual operations in manufacturing companies are still a common practice. This often results in high costs, high cycle times and therefore in lower productivity, particularly for companies operating in western countries. This is why many manufacturing companies relocated their production facilities in low age countries. This study was developed at a leading Portuguese material construction manufacturing company. The objective was to improve the packaging and labeling processes, that were identified as main bottlenecks in the factory. Lean was used to streamline these processes before being automated. This allowed for annual savings of 12432 €, with human operators being reallocated to other departments where they are more useful. Furthermore, cycle times were reduced by 42,9%, non-value-added activities were minimized, and operations with potentially high ergonomic risks were eliminated. In addition, a reduction of 84,3% in lithographed packaging was achieved, with a cost reduction of around 36 000 €/year, which is expected to continue in the forthcoming years.

- Definition of a decision support model for calculating the economic production lot sizePublication . Pereira, M. Teresa; Magalhães, Hugo; Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Barreiras, AlcindaThis paper proposes a Decision Support System (DSS) for Calculating the Economic Production Lot Size. The focus is on the analysis of improvement of manufacturing productivity in the packaging industry, specifically in a metal packaging company. Through combining different SKUs (Stock Keeping Units) in the same production order, as opposed to the current single SKU orders production paradigm of, it is possible to increase the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). This study identified the most critical OEE products within the company portfolio. One critical OEE was selected from within company’s strategic fitting process for the assessment of all relevant parameters set for the manufacturing process so that no product variant was disregarded. Evaluation of the improvement achieved by the new production paradigm was possible through a DSS tool developed to combine different SKUs in due production order, taking into account real data from customers’ orders. Following the tool development, it was possible to proceed with simulations for various review periods. As this study is an iterative process, the results obtained within each simulation enabled an improved definition for subsequent analysis focusing on the goal set - improving the OEE without increasing stock value. Finally, results were evaluated and the operational and economic benefits of combining different SKUs within the same production order were unequivocal, representing an OEE increase of 20% and a maximum decrease of 367,215€ in stock value.
- Development of a suitable project management approach for projects with parallel planning and executionPublication . Freitas, F.; Silva, Francisco J. G; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Pimentel, C.; Godina, R.In a big company, project management (PM) is always present. Traditional predictive PM approach is concerned with planning everything in advance and then controlling and adjusting if necessary, throughout the project timeline. This may work well when the requirements are well established, but for maintenance projects brings inherent uncertainty. When the subject is aircraft maintenance, it is almost impossible to plan everything at the beginning and expect that it will occur as planned because however a scheduled maintenance plan exists, according to statistics 60% of the aircraft total failure can only be found with ground inspection which means, that even if a plan is established before receiving the aircraft, it will most certainly need to be significantly changed. This requires a big effort from the planning team to plan everything right and ensure that all tools and resources are available to perform the required tasks. To solve this issue, in this paper we propose a hybrid project management approach developed to a case study company from the aircraft repair sector, to enable a faster planning while taking into account the priorities and dependencies of the inherent project tasks with the available resources.
- Evaluation of T-joints in aluminium structures under different geometriesPublication . Moreira, F.J.P.; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Cardoso, M.G.; Silva, Francisco J. G.The adhesive bonding technique is nowadays very popular in industrial applications, and is gradually replacing other more traditional bonding methods (fastened, welded and riveted joints) due to some advantages. However, its application supposes accurate methods for strength prediction. As a result, the techniques to predict the strength of adhesive joints has highly evolved. The eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) is a recent innovation implemented over the (Finite Element Method) FEM that enables crack growth to be modelled. However, its application to adhesive joints is still scarce. This work consists of an experimental and XFEM analysis of aluminium alloy T-joints, adhesively-bonded with three adhesive types. A parametric study is undertaken regarding the curved adherends’ thickness (tP2), with values between 1 and 4 mm. The adhesives Araldite® AV138 (strong but brittle), Araldite® 2015 (less strong but moderately ductile) and the Sikaforce® 7752 (with the smallest strength but highly ductile) were tested. A comparative analysis between the different joints conditions was undertaken by plotting peel (σу) and shear (τxy) stresses. The XFEM predictive capabilities were tested with different damage initiation criteria. It was found that, provided that the modelling conditions are properly set, accurate numerical results can be found.

- Guidelines for Machine Tool Sensing and Smart Manufacturing IntegrationPublication . Costa, S.; Silva, Francisco J. G; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Pereira, TeresaNowadays the Industry is becoming increasingly competitive with the emergence of even more advanced technologies. This environment leads the companies to look for a bigger availability of the assets, a higher quality of the products and consequently less costs. Thus, is because of this purpose that Maintenance is becoming even more fundamental. The focus of this paper was to develop a strategy of Predictive Maintenance on a Machine Tool with the aim of reducing the unplanned stops, increasing the productivity and creating the bases for an Industry 4.0 environment in the short term. Thus, a model has been created in order to fulfil this goal. The first step was the selection of the critical component of the machine tool that would be studied. In the next phase the variables that will be monitored were selected and their trigger limits. Finally, the necessary components to monitor this system were chosen. In order to reach the objective, a system of condition-based maintenance where the acoustic emissions and vibration of the bearing of a machine tool were monitor was proposed.
- How can technology on the automotive industry save the future?Publication . Dieguez, Teresa; Corcetti, L.; Silva, Francisco J. G.; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Ferreira, Luís PintoTransport is Europe is a biggest source of CO2, being responsible for the emission of over a quarter of all greenhouse gases. Unless transport emissions are brought under control national 2030 climate goals will be missed. To meet the 2050 Paris climate commitments cars and vans must be entirely decarbonized. This requires ending sales of cars with an internal combustion engine by 2035. Big challenges and huge efforts between all stakeholders are needed. Governments are, almost universally, unwilling to constrain demand for mobility and, in particular, car use and ownership. The future demands paradigm changes and better education for sustainable development. The present work aims to present a study on the currently used main vehicle motorization technologies, namely, the vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE), electric motors (EM), electric-hybrid vehicles (EHV) and vehicles fuel cells (VFC), regardless of the technology diffusion. The main objective of this study is to point out the best model to help reduce the amount of pollutant gas emission as well as contribute to public policy decision making. After a literature review, a Sustainability Index was applied to select a set of sixteen models of different brands and categories. The used management tool is the Hierarchy Process (AHP). After discussion of results, conclusions are presented.
