- Value Analysis approach in the resources pre-selection of agile/virtual enterprises: Domain of applicability and selection timePublication . Pires, Antonio; Ávila, Paulo; Putnik, GoranFor the project of an Agile/Virtual Enterprise (A/V E) the resources selection is a key factor. The resources systems (output of the selection process) should be prepared to guarantee quality, efficiency and cost-attractiveness, in order to ensure the agility and integrability of the A/V E. This is a difficult matter because it can be a combinatorial and multi-criteria problem. Despite the potential of Value Analysis (VA), none of the resources selection models found in the literature incorporates the evaluation of the resources value. They approach mainly the factors cost and/or time. So, our model constitutes an innovative approach because it gives the highest importance to the value of the resources systems, through the incorporation of VA. The main objective is to quantify the selection process performance with VA integrated into the pre-selection of resources in accordance with the developed model. The paper contribution is the positive confirmation, through the simulation results analysis, of the benefits of VA integration in the resources selection process: greater applicability domain for candidate resources and number of tasks; and reduction of the selection time. In conclusion, the increased efficiency and the superior applicability domain of the model are demonstrated.
- A Lean Set-Based Design Approach for Development of Customizable Products in Collaborative NetworksPublication . Bastos, João; Azevedo, Américo; Ávila, PauloIn nowadays competing market, companies are constantly challenged to reduce the lead time for new products design process by diminishing the time response that goes from the arise of the market opportunity to the satisfaction of the customer need. Simultaneously, companies and networked organizations face a growing number of product configurations, lower product volumes, a continuously growing appetence for personalized products, pressing the decision makers into adopting more efficient product development processes. The present paper addresses the main collaborative product development issues by proposing a responsive and efficient use of knowledge on networked environments through a lean-based framework for collaborative networks. In particular, this work describes the main lean concepts and tools that are enhancers of an efficient and distributed customizable product development process in networked environment.
- Guidelines for Machine Tool Sensing and Smart Manufacturing IntegrationPublication . Costa, S.; Silva, Francisco J. G; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Pereira, TeresaNowadays the Industry is becoming increasingly competitive with the emergence of even more advanced technologies. This environment leads the companies to look for a bigger availability of the assets, a higher quality of the products and consequently less costs. Thus, is because of this purpose that Maintenance is becoming even more fundamental. The focus of this paper was to develop a strategy of Predictive Maintenance on a Machine Tool with the aim of reducing the unplanned stops, increasing the productivity and creating the bases for an Industry 4.0 environment in the short term. Thus, a model has been created in order to fulfil this goal. The first step was the selection of the critical component of the machine tool that would be studied. In the next phase the variables that will be monitored were selected and their trigger limits. Finally, the necessary components to monitor this system were chosen. In order to reach the objective, a system of condition-based maintenance where the acoustic emissions and vibration of the bearing of a machine tool were monitor was proposed.
- Lean and Ergonomics decision support tool assessment in a plastic packaging companyPublication . Brito, Marlene; Vale, M.; Leão, J.; Ferreira, Luís Pinto; Silva, Francisco J. G.; Gonçalves, Maria AntóniaThis paper intends to apply and improve a workstation assessment tool called ErgoSafeCI. Lean manufacturing methods and guidelines, together with safety and ergonomics aspects, were thoroughly researched with the ultimate objective of finding a way to improve the workplace by considering the efficiency and well-being of workers. The assessment tool was applied in the plastics packaging sector, in a process which relied on both practical and theoretical ideas. This tool originates in the notion that for a successful Lean implementation, managers should start the Lean process with a Lean assessment which is then repeated on a regular basis. In addition, it is also important to integrate ergonomic conditions in this journey because ergonomic risks can sometimes result in Lean wastes and vice versa, so workplace ergonomics and Lean manufacturing are to a great extent inter-related. This tool aids practitioners in the assessment of the implementation of Lean principles and safety matters in their processes.
- Numerical simulation of adhesively-bonded T-stiffeners by cohesive zone modelsPublication . Ferreira, J.A.M.; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Cardoso, Mónica G.; Silva, Francisco J. G.Nowadays, the adhesive bonding method has a strong presence in the most varied industries. The bonding of composite materials with structural adhesives became more relevant in the industry, such as the aeronautical industry, which takes advantage of stiffener structures in composite materials using adhesive bonds. In any area of industry, large-scale application of a particular bonding technique requires reliable tools for the design and prediction of failure. This work evaluates the performance of a structural adhesive (Araldite® 2015) on a T-stiffener with composite adherends composed of an epoxy matrix reinforced with carbon fibers. The aim of the work is to numerically study, by the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Cohesive Zone Models (CZM), the behavior of different T-stiffener configurations under peel loads. A parametric study was carried out, including elastic stress analysis and maximum load (Pm) prediction, considering four geometrical parameters: flat adherend thickness (tP), stiffener thickness (t0), overlap length (LO) and curved deltoid radius (R). A significant effect was found for all studied parameters, on both stress distributions and Pm, enabling to define the optimal joint parameters for the T-stiffeners.
- Analysis and Improvement of the Packaging Sector of an Industrial CompanyPublication . Alves, Diogo; Ferreira, Luís Pinto; Pereira, Maria Teresa; Sá, José Carlos; Silva, Francisco J. G.; Fernandes, N.O.Manual operations in manufacturing companies are still a common practice. This often results in high costs, high cycle times and therefore in lower productivity, particularly for companies operating in western countries. This is why many manufacturing companies relocated their production facilities in low age countries. This study was developed at a leading Portuguese material construction manufacturing company. The objective was to improve the packaging and labeling processes, that were identified as main bottlenecks in the factory. Lean was used to streamline these processes before being automated. This allowed for annual savings of 12432 €, with human operators being reallocated to other departments where they are more useful. Furthermore, cycle times were reduced by 42,9%, non-value-added activities were minimized, and operations with potentially high ergonomic risks were eliminated. In addition, a reduction of 84,3% in lithographed packaging was achieved, with a cost reduction of around 36 000 €/year, which is expected to continue in the forthcoming years.
- A new structural two-component epoxy adhesive: Strength and fracture characterizationPublication . Cardoso, M.G.; Pinto, J.E.C.; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Nóvoa, P.J.R.O.; Silva, Francisco J. G.; Ramalho, L.D.C.In the past decades, adhesive technology has been useful in order to solve numerous issues related with conventional joining techniques (bolting, riveting and welding). Several advantages of adhesive bonding can be pointed out, such as low weight (relevant in the automotive and aeronautical industries), capability to resist to adverse environmental conditions, lower manufacturing costs and possibility to join different materials. To predict crack propagation of an adhesive joint by advanced fracture mechanics-based techniques such as cohesive zone models (CZM) it is not enough to know the traditional mechanical properties, such as Young’s modulus (E), shear modulus (G), tensile strength (σf) and shear strength (τf). Actually, it is also mandatory to estimate the tensile (GIC) and shear fracture energies (GIIC). The purpose of this work is to carry out the mechanical and fracture property characterization of a new structural two-component epoxy adhesive. With this purpose, four tests which were conducted: tensile testing to bulk specimens, shear testing with thick adherend shear tests (TAST), double-cantilever beam (DCB) and end-notched flexure (ENF). With these tests, it was possible to determine the mechanical and fracture properties of the adhesive in tension and shear. Different data reduction methods were evaluated for the fracture properties. The test results agreed with the data provided by the manufacturer and will enable the design of bonded structures with this adhesive.
