- Comparison of allergic rhinitis treatments on patient satisfaction: A MASK-air and EAACI Methodological Committee ReportPublication . Bousquet, Jean; Amaral, RitaSatisfaction with treatments may affect medication adherence and use patterns, including the use of comedication. We aimed to compare different medications for allergic rhinitis (AR) on (i) patients' satisfaction and (ii) co-medication use frequency. We assessed data from the mHealth app MASK-air. We evaluated days on which users with self-reported AR had used—alone or in co-medication—intranasal corticosteroids (INCS), intranasal antihistamines (INAH), fixed combinations of INAH+INCS, or oral antihistamines (OAH). We built multivariable regression models to compare these different AR medication classes (as well as individual medications) on their (i) treatment satisfaction levels (measured using a specific daily visual analogue scale [‘VAS satisfaction’]) and (ii) odds of being used in co-medication. We assessed 28,177days reported by 1691 MASK-air users. For all medication classes, co-medication usage was associated with lower treatment satisfaction. When used in monotherapy, OAH were associated with lower VAS satisfaction than INCS (−1.7 points; 95% CI=–2.7; –0.7) or INAH+INCS (−2.1 points; 95% CI=–3.5; –0.7). INCS displayed higher odds of being used in co-medication than OAH (OR=1.3; 95% CI=1.0; 1.6) or INAH+INCS (OR=1.3; 95% CI=0.8; 1.8). When comparing individual intranasal medications, fluticasone furoate and fluticasone propionate tended to be more frequently used in co-medication. Among individual OAH, desloratadine and rupatadine were associated with higher satisfaction, while fexofenadine was more frequently used in co-medication. Using patient-reported data, we evaluated different medication classes and treatments in terms of satisfaction and co-medication frequency. These results provide key insights into the acceptability of AR treatments and will contribute to future treatment guidelines.

- A comprehensive analysis of viability assays for Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas vaginalis trophozoites: a systematic reviewPublication . Sequeira, Susie; Sousa, Mariana; Cruz, AgostinhoGiardia lamblia and Trichomonas vaginalis are flagellated protozoan parasites that often cause asymptomatic infections but may lead to gastrointestinal or genitourinary symptoms. Improved treatment options are needed due to emerging resistance. However, selecting an appropriate method for assessing the in vitro susceptibility of G. lamblia and T. vaginalis in the presence of potential therapeutic compounds remains challenging due to the variability in these methods. This study aimed to provide an overview of commonly employed methods for determining trophozoite viability in the presence of potential therapeutic compounds and to propose a standardized viability assay for susceptibility testing for G. lamblia and T. vaginalis. A systematic literature review was conducted according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) 2020 statement, using databases including MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science, with the following search equation: “in vitro” AND “method” AND (“susceptibility” OR “viability” OR “sensitivity”) AND (“giardia” OR “trichomonas”). The search identified 32 experimental studies with diverse viability assays. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, adherence inhibition assay, and [3H]-thymidine incorporation assay were prominent for G. lamblia. The trypan blue assay, motility assessment, and resazurin assay were frequently used for T. vaginalis. These findings underscore the diversity in viability assessment methods, highlighting the importance of standardizing viability assays to ensure accurate and reproducible results in drug susceptibility studies. The fluorometric resazurin assay has emerged as a suitable choice for standardization in both parasites, offering cost-effectiveness, reliability, and ease of use.
- Unlocking the functional potential of Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum: Insights into digestibility, safety and intestinal uptakePublication . Pinto, Diana; Vieira, Raquel; Teixeira, Filipa; Sut, Stefania; Vieira, Mónica; Salazar, Miguel; Delerue-Matos, Cristina; Dall’Acqua, Stefano; Rodrigues, Francisca; Vieira, MónicaMesembryanthemum nodiflorum, commonly known as slenderleaf iceplant, is an undervalued edible halophyte. The nutraceutical potential of M. nodiflorum was investigated in the current study by extracting bioactive compounds using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and assessing the influence of gastrointestinal digestion and intestinal permeability on their bioactive composition. The phenolic and flavonoid contents were the highest in the alcoholic extract, along with exceptional antioxidant/antiradical effects. The gastrointestinal digestion enhances the release and detectability of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity, with bioaccessibility exceeding 100 %. Additionally, the extracts stimulated antioxidant enzymes and inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE), with alcoholic extract showing the highest inhibition (38 %). UPLC-QTOF-MS unveiled high concentrations of glycerophospholipids, tryptophan, and 5,5 ′-dihydroferulic acid. Ethanol was the most effective solvent for extracting bioactive compounds. Through an intestinal co-culture model, the intestinal digest from the alcoholic extract demonstrated notable permeation (66 % for rosmanol, 30 % for Lys-Asp-Tyr, and 15 % for tryptophan). These results highlight the bioactivity and intestinal absorption of M. nodiflorum extracts, repurposing this halophyte as a nutraceutical.
- Adverse reactions mediated by 99mTc-tetrofosmin: Literature review and analysis of post-marketing reportsPublication . Martins, Sara; Costa, Sara Poças; Sousa, Mariana; Moreira, Fernando; Martín-Suaréz, A.; Jesus, Ângelo; Jesus, Ângelo; Moreira, Fernando99mTc-tetrofosmin is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical used to evaluate cardiac pathologies. Despite the lower incidence of reactions compared to other drugs, radiopharmaceuticals can still cause adverse reactions. For this reason, pharmacovigilance plays a crucial role in detecting, understanding, evaluating and preventing them. This study aims to review the available literature,on the safety of99mTc-tetrofosmin, and to analyze spontaneous adverse drug reaction reports from the European EudraVigilance database. A literature review was conducted according to PRISMA methodology. An analysis of spontaneous notifications was carried out in EudraVigilance, until 2022. The review identified a selection of 7 articles. The most reported adverse reactions were skin irritation, strange taste in the mouth and nausea. Regarding the EudraVigilance analysis, 220 notifications were identified, accounting for 477 adverse reactions. The majority belong to males (51%), between 18-64 years (45%). Health professionals were the main reporters (84%). The most prevalent System Organ Class was “general disorders and administration site conditions” (21%) and the most reported adverse reaction was pruritus (10%). Approximately 67% of reactions were considered serious, with 6 fatal cases recorded. The results demonstrated that adverse reactions associated with99mTc-tetrofosmin do occur and should not be minimized. Over a period of 17 years, only 220 notifications were recorded, which may highlight potential challenges in pharmacovigilance for radiopharmaceuticals. Therefore, raising awareness about the importance of reporting adverse reactions is crucial.
- Is endometriosis staging related to the type and intensity of patients’ complaints? A systematic review and meta-analysisPublication . Alves, João Sequeira; Meneses, Tânia; Mariano, Mafalda; Serra, Sofia Silvério; Costa, Teresa; Martins, João Paulo; Rabishong, Benoit; Lima, Jorge; Oliveira Martins, João PauloTo evaluate the association between the endometriosis staging and the type and intensity of pain reported by patients, describing the pain intensity across different pain types. On January 27, 2025, a systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library. The search terms included endometriosis, pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, pelvic pain, dyschezia, dysuria, and classification. Eligible studies examined women with endometriosis, assessing how endometriosis staging (rASRM or ENZIAN classification) correlated with pain symptoms (dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, dyschezia, dysuria, and chronic pelvic pain) measured with validated tools. Two reviewers extracted data independently, with a third verifying results. Pain scores were log-transformed to stabilize variance, and proportions of women with advanced endometriosis were analyzed on the logit scale. Given high heterogeneity, random-effects models with restricted maximum likelihood were used. Of 2527 records, 112 studies were reviewed and eight met inclusion criteria (seven using rASRM, one using ENZIAN). Dysmenorrhea showed the highest mean intensity (6.61, 95% CI: 4.43–10.10), while dysuria was lowest (1.08, 95% CI: 0.62–1.89). Pain intensity did not differ significantly between rASRM stages I/II and III/IV (p > 0.05), though chronic pelvic pain was more frequent in advanced disease (p < 0.05). Dysmenorrhea is linked to higher pain intensity in women with endometriosis, while dysuria is linked to lower intensity. Pain intensity is not associated with the rASRM stage; however, chronic pelvic pain seems more prevalent in advanced stages of the disease.
- Ultrafine Ru on Reduced Graphene Oxide-La2O3 Binary Support for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution ReactionPublication . Jiaying Zhang; Qijing Zhang; Jingyi Qiu; Xiaoying Zhang; Zhiyuan Zhu; Hongyan Chen; Konggang Qu; Lijian MengRu-based catalysts are recognized as one of the most competitive candidates for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nonetheless, reducing Ru loading and maximizing atomic utilization remain paramount priorities for achieving optimal cost efficiency. Herein, the ultrafine Ru nanoparticles loaded on a reduced graphene oxide- La2O3 binary support (Ru/La2O3-rGO) was rationally designed via a simple liquid impregnation method with a low-content Ru of 6.1 wt%. Benefitting from the synergistic interplay of the binary substrate, Ru/La2O3-rGO achieves a current density of 10 mA cm 2 at an ultrasmall overpotential of 15.8 mV for alkaline HER, outperforming Pt/C, while also exhibiting good stability and high intrinsic activity. This work offers novel insights into the rational design of high-performance, stable, and cost-effective Ru-based HER catalysts.
- Cost analysis of Multidose Drug Dispensing (MDD) system implementation in a community pharmacy in PortugalPublication . Reis, Ana; Jesus, Ângelo; Martín, Maria Luisa; Jesus, ÂngeloCommunity pharmacies are increasingly delivering structured services to support chronic disease management, such as Multidose Drug Dispensing (MDD). This strategy can improve adherence and safety, but evidence of its economic feasibility in Portuguese pharmacies remains limited. To estimate the cost of implementing and operating an MDD system in a community pharmacy, informing reimbursement models and policy. A micro-costing approach assessed fixed and variable expenses for serving polymedicated elderly patients. Costs were calculated in euros (2024/2025) and expressed per working day based on 253 annual preparation days. First-year costs totaled €70,985.68, including €8184.00 for setup, €21,579.00 for supplies, and €41,222.68 for staff salaries. The daily operating cost was €280.58, with labour representing the major expense. A break-even analysis indicated sustainability with around 700 users at €10/month. Although requiring significant initial investment, MDD can become financially viable through scaling, workflow efficiency, and supportive reimbursement strategies.
