- 2D:4D digit ratio is associated with cognitive decline but not frailty in community-dwelling older adultsPublication . Gonçalves, Celina; Coelho, Tiago; Machado, Sérgio; Rocha, NunoObjectives To understand the relation between 2D:4D ratio, frailty, and cognitive decline in community-dwelling elderly people. Methods A total of 175 community-dwelling elderly people were included. To determine frailty, participants completed the Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) and the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE-FI). Cognitive functioning was determined using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). 2D and 4D finger lengths of each hand were measured using a scanner. Barthel Index, Lawton, and Brody scale were also completed for each participant to determine the level of daily living functioning. Results We did not find any correlations between 2D:4D ratio and frailty measures. We found a significant correlation between 2D:4D ratio and MMSE scores in the women sampled. Conclusions We cannot ascertain any contribution of prenatal exposure to androgens to the frailty status of community-dwelling elderly people. We found that reduced prenatal exposure to testosterone in women may contribute to the prevention of cognitive decline in elderly women
- Assessing the social dimension of frailty in old age: A systematic reviewPublication . Bessa, Bruno; Ribeiro, Oscar; Coelho, TiagoIntroduction Different concepts of frailty have resulted in different assessment tools covering distinct dimensions. Despite the growing recognition that there is an association between frailty and social factors, there’s a lack of clarity on what is being assessed in terms of “social aspects” of frailty. Objective This paper provides a review of frailty assessment instruments (screening tools and severity measures) with a special focus on their social components. Methods Systematic review of studies published in English between 2001 and March 2018 in the PubMed database using a combination of MeSH Terms and logical operators through inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results A total of 27 assessment tools including at least one social question were identified. Three instruments focuses exclusively on social frailty, whereas the weight of social dimensions in the other instruments ranges between 5% and 43%. Social activities, social support, social network, loneliness and living alone were the social concepts most represented by the social components of the various frailty instruments. Conclusion Social components of frailty vary from instrument to instrument and cover the concepts of social isolation, loneliness, social network, social support and social participation.
- Comparing the effects of two balance intervention programs on the center of pressure oscillation of elderly individualsPublication . Oliveira, Bibiana; Silva, Ana Sofia; Azevedo, Ricardo; Matos, Paula; Coelho, Tiago; Lopes, Daniela; Fernandes, Ângela; Portugal, Paula; Santos, RubimWith the ageign process, changes occur that compromise mobility and balance. These changes increase the risk of falls in the elderly.
- Comparing the effects of two different intervention programs on mobility, balance and risk of falls in elderly individualsPublication . Azevedo, Ricardo; Oliveira, Bibiana; Silva, Ana Sofia; Matos, Paula; Coelho, Tiago; Fernandes, Ângela; Santos, Rubim; Portugal, PaulaMobility and balance impairments are frequent in old age. Consequently, elderly individuals may present a higher risk of falling, which in turn can have dire consequences.

Silva, Ana Sofia; Oliveira, Bibiana; Matos, Paula; Lopes, Daniela; Portugal, Paula; Coelho, Tiago; Fernandes, Ângela; Santos, RubimThroughout the process of aging, there are several changes that can cause postural instability or balance disability, increasing the number of fall in elderly.
- Comparison of the frailty phenotype and the Tilburg Frailty Indicator regarding the prediction of quality of life in a two-year follow-upPublication . Coelho, Tiago; Paúl, C.; Fernandes, L.Frail individuals are highly vulnerable to minor stressful events, presenting a higher risk for adverse health outcomes (e.g. falls, disability, hospitalization), which can lead to a decline in quality of life (QoL). In this context, an early screening of elderly frailty is of crucial importance.
- Determinants of frailty: the added value of assessing medicationPublication . Coelho, Tiago; Paúl, Constança; Gobbens, Robbert JJ; Fernandes, LiaThis study aims to analyze which determinants predict frailty in general and each frailty domain (physical, psychological, and social), considering the integral conceptual model of frailty, and particularly to examine the contribution of medication in this prediction. A cross-sectional study was designed using a non-probabilistic sample of 252 community-dwelling elderly from three Portuguese cities. Frailty and determinants of frailty were assessed with the Tilburg Frailty Indicator. The amount and type of different daily-consumed medication were also examined. Hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. The mean age of the participants was 79.2 years (±7.3), and most of them were women (75.8%), widowed (55.6%) and with a low educational level (0–4 years: 63.9%). In this study, determinants explained 46% of the variance of total frailty, and 39.8, 25.3, and 27.7% of physical, psychological, and social frailty respectively. Age, gender, income, death of a loved one in the past year, lifestyle, satisfaction with living environment and self-reported comorbidity predicted total frailty, while each frailty domain was associated with a different set of determinants. The number of daily-consumed drugs was independently associated with physical frailty, and the consumption of medication for the cardiovascular system and for the blood and blood-forming organs explained part of the variance of total and physical frailty. The adverse effects of polymedication and its direct link with the level of comorbidities could explain the independent contribution of the amount of prescribed drugs to frailty prediction. On the other hand, findings in regard to medication type provide further evidence of the association of frailty with cardiovascular risk. In the present study, a significant part of frailty was predicted, and the different contributions of each determinant to frailty domains highlight the relevance of the integral model of frailty. The added value of a simple assessment of medication was considerable, and it should be taken into account for effective identification of frailty.
