- Antipsychotic therapy and biochemical laboratory profile characterization of a sample of patients diagnosed with schizophreniaPublication . Amorim, Manuela; Moreira, A.; Condeço, Jorge; Monteiro, Pedro; Marques, António; Summavielle, TeresaSchizophrenia (SCZ) patients are reported to present significant abnormalities in lipid and glucose metabolism, that increase the risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, possibly induced by antipsychotic therapy (APT) and lifestyle.
- Effects of one session of physical exercise associated to abdominal microcurrent in the global lipolytic ratePublication . Vilarinho, Rui; Noites, Andreia; Couto, Miriam; Monteiro, Pedro; Melo, Cristina; Amorim, Manuela; Moreira, AnabelaDuring aerobic exercise lipid sources are global. Since the decrease of central obesity has more health gains, it's important to promote an increase in lipolysis from the abdominal region. Analyze the effect of one session of aerobic exercise associated to microcurrent in the adipose tissue of abdominal region in the global lipolytic rate through the values of glycerol in plasma.
- Evaluation of disturbances in metabolism related to lipid profile in patients with schizophreniaPublication . Moura, Lara; Moreira, Anabela; Ferreira, Stéphanie; Moreira, Teresa; Mota, Sandra; Marques, António; Amorim, ManuelaSchizophrenia (SCZ) is a complex and multifactorial mental disorder. Currently, pharmacologic antipsychotic therapy (AP) focuses in SCZ symptoms minimization. AP has been associated with potentially adverse metabolic effects that may lead to an increased cardiovascular risk (CVR). To characterize SCZ patients of a psychosocial rehabilitation association (PRA) regarding antipsychotic therapy and sociodemographic, clinical, biochemical (total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides) and anthropometric parameters; To describe the AP prescription when observed changes in biochemical parameters.
- Microbiological characterization of bathing areas of a county in the Northern regionPublication . Mendes, Joana; Mota, Sandra; Araújo, António; Rodrigues, Cecília; Moreira, Teresa; Amorim, ManuelaThe management of bathing water aims at the protection of human health and the preservation, protection and improvement of the quality of the environment. In order to control the quality of these same waters for recreational use, microbiological indicators of faecal contamination are monitored, according to Decree-Law 135/2009 of June 3rd. The microbiological indicators of faecal contamination used are Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp. since they are commensals of the gastrointestinal flora of humans and most animals. This study aimed to characterize the results of intestinal E. coli and Enterococcus parameters of inland bathing waters of a county in the northern region of Portugal during 2016.
- Microbiological characterization of food handlers in school canteensPublication . Gomes, Diana; Moreira, Teresa; Mota, Marlene; Rodrigues, Cecília; Araújo, António; Amorim, ManuelaFood-borne substances are a major concern of Public Health, given that food can be the source of various hazards (biological, physical and chemical). Approximately 20% of outbreaks of foodborne illness are associated with the personal hygiene of food handlers. The personal hygiene of manipulators is one of the best ways to block bacterial contamination and its extension to new areas. To evaluate the microbiological profile of the hands of food handlers in school canteens of the northern region of Portugal during 2016 and to verify the efficiency of the hygiene processes.
- Microbiological characterization on the smoked meat productsPublication . Relvas, Rita; Ferreira, Stéphanie; Moreira, Anabela; Moreira, Teresa; Mota, Sandra; Araújo, António; Amorim, ManuelaPortugal is a country characterized by production of a variety of sausage products. Many of these are subjected to conservation processes, including smoking to promote textures, flavors and bacterial inhibition. To microbiologically characterize whole and sliced smoked meat products, analyzed during 2014 at Biogerm Laboratory.
- Microbiological quality control of minced beef and porkPublication . Alves, Sílvia; Moreira, Anabela; Ferreira, Stephanie; Moreira, Teresa; Mota, Sandra; Araújo, António; Amorim, ManuelaFood-borne infections are responsible for high rates of mortality and morbidity. To evaluate and compare the results of microbiological analysis of minced beef and pork.
- Nucleic acids extraction equipment comparisonPublication . Marques, Ana; Monteiro, Fátima; Moreira, Anabela; Ferreira, Stephanie; Moreira, Teresa; Mota, Sandra; Amorim, ManuelaThe nucleic acids extraction is the first step towards molecular diagnostic tests. It is a process susceptible to various interferences that can cause target material shortage. The objective of this study is to compare the methodological and operational characteristics of nucleic acids extraction equipment MagnaPure LC and QIAsymphony SP.
- Peripheral metabolism in rat with olanzapine subchronic treatment supplemented with acetyl-L carnitinePublication . Amorim, Manuela; Silva, Ana Isabel; Alves, Cecília Juliana; Monteiro, Pedro R.; Magalhães, Ana; Summavielle, TeresaOlanzapine (Olz) have been reported to promote higher risk for metabolic side-effects, such as obesity, dyslipidemia, and diabetes. Moreover/On the other hand, acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) has been reported to improve homeostasis. This study aims to explore if ALC could improve metabolic homeostasis due to Olz effects on a rodent model. We investigated the effects of subchronic administration of Olz and with the addition of ALC on body weight gain and glucose metabolism in Wistar rats. Mid-term Olz exposure in rats significantly increases blood glucose levels in fasting and after the overload of glucose compared to the sali-ne-treated group (p<0.05). However, in rats mid-term treated with olanzapine plus acetyl-L-carnitine had no significant differences in fasting blood glucose levels compared to the saline-treated group. The findings suggest that ALC added to Olz treatment appeared to be effective to improve glucose metabolism during olanzapine subchronic treatment.
- Physical exercise and it influence in salivary cortisol levelsPublication . Trancoso, Ana; Ferreira, Stephanie; Moreira, Anabela; Moreira, Teresa; Mota, Sandra; Amorim, ManuelaCortisol is important for the individual survival since it interferes with several of the body's systems. Only free cortisol fraction can be determined in saliva. Although saliva presents advantages compared to other biological products for the cortisol measurement, it is influenced by several factors - physical and psychological stress.
