En el presente artículo se traduce y analiza el soneto del escritor inglés Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame... El ingenio de este poeta supone en muchas ocasiones un reto para el traductor, ya que exige, además del conocimiento de la lengua origen y de llegada, su misma inventiva creadora. Así pues, se presentan aquí dos posibles traducciones: la primera, más académica, y la segunda deliberadamente libre y quizá heterodoxa. Esta última puede ser cuestionadapor su forma, pero no por lo que al espíritu o intencionalidad subyacente de Hopkins se refiere.
n this paper, the sonnet As Kingfishers Catch Fire, Dragonflies Draw Flame, by the English writer Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889), is translated and analysed. An author endowed with great inventiveness, Hopkins’ compositions are often a challenge for the translator, since they require, in addition to knowledge of the source and target languages, a creative inventiveness parallel to that he possessed. Thus, two possible translations are presented here: the first, more academic, and the second deliberately free and perhaps heterodox. The latter can be questioned for its form, but not as far as Hopkins’ underlying spirit or intentionality is concerned.
