  • A sustainable approach to let students do more real experiments with electrical and electronic circuits

    The present paper focus on the use of remote laboratories in higher education from a sustainability viewpoint. The particular case of engineering education, and, within it, the more specific subject of experiments with electrical and electronic circuits is presented first, to then discuss the benefits of using remote labs, while considering the three dimensions of sustainable development, i.e.: economic practice, environmental protection, and social integration. The paper debates how remote labs address each dimension.
  • How Remote Labs Impact on Course Outcomes: Various Practices Using VISIR

    As technology is increasingly being seen as a fa- cilitator to learning, open remote laboratories are increasingly available and in widespread use around the world. They provide some advantages over traditional hands-on labs or simulations. This paper presents the results of integrating the open remote laboratory VISIR into several courses, in various contexts and using various methodologies. These integrations, all related to higher education engineering, were designed by teachers with different perspectives to achieve a range of learning outcomes. The degree to which these VISIR-related outcomes were accomplished is discussed. The results reect the levels of student engagement and learning and of teacher involvement. From the analysis, a connection between these two aspects was traced, although only related to the user proles. VISIR is shown to be always of benet for more motivated students, but this benet can be maximized under particular conditions and characteristics.
  • Towards a pneumatic insole concept to offloading plantar pressure in diabetic foot pathology

    Diabetic foot is a serious complication of diabetes that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by poor circulation, nerve damage and high plantar pressure that can lead to the development of foot ulcers and amputations. Offloading plantar pressure in certain regions is extremely important. In this paper we propose a preliminary methodology for a new concept of a pneumatic insole to offloading pressure on critical points in the plantar region of the diabetic foot. It is expected that this pneumatic insole will have an intelligent and differentiated performance in result of the pressures imposed inside the shoe. The proposed methodology consists of producing an insole with pockets, located in critical regions of the foot, which can be inflated with air to maintain a stable pressure. If any region is identified with a pressure above the defined threshold, these pockets can empty until the pressure is uniform. This pneumatic insole will promote a better redistribution of plantar pressure in the diabetic foot, it does not add significant weight or volume to the shoe and should bring greater comfort to the user.
  • Students' perception about using VISIR

    Remote Labs allows students a complementary way to learn. While working upon their experimental skills, they can practice their autonomy. VISIR is one of the remote labs more used in the field of Electricity and Electronics. This study was conducted in three countries and 14 educational institutions and gathered 952 students' opinions while using VISIR along with other experimental resources. Its goal was to perceive students' opinion about VISIR. Several advantages and disadvantages were identified, regardless the focus of the course or students' level of usage. Positively: “the potential of the equipment”, “access from anywhere/anytime” and “better/more complete understanding”; Negatively: “operating issues”, “problems in understanding” and “poor interface/old fashionable/too simple”.
  • Towards an in-shoe pneumatic insole to plantar injury prevention in diabetic foot

    Diabetic foot is a serious complication of diabetes that affects millions of people around the world. It is characterized by poor circulation, nerve damage and high plantar pressure that can lead to the development of foot ulcers and amputations. Offloading plantar pressure in certain regions is extremely important. In this paper we propose a preliminary methodology for a new concept of pneumatic insole for plantar pressure offloading. It consists of an insole with pockets, located in critical regions of the diabetic foot, which can be inflated or deflated to maintain adequate pressure. The main goal of this work is to select the most suitable fluid for the system and that provides a better applicability for this new solution, describing its pros and cons. When analyzing the results, the use of compressed air as a fluid to regulate the pressure in the insole pockets stood out as the most appropriate and advantageous option compared to other gaseous or liquid fluids. Liquid fluids have negative aspects, such as the risk of damaging electronic components in case of leaks and the need for additional reservoirs. In addition, air has a better thermal insulation capacity and does not pose a risk of toxicity, an important aspect for a system that will be in direct contact with the diabetic foot. The availability and zero cost of air, its lightness, and the absence of the need for reservoirs make the pneumatic insole more accessible and low cost, also providing greater cushioning, shock absorption and pressure redistribution.
  • KeepingTrack: Helping dementia autonomy

    Currently, the most developed countries are facing an increase in average life expectancy. This increase is mainly due to high technological advances in terms of techniques for preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases. In this way, more and more degenerative diseases will appear, including dementia. This disease affects memory, reasoning, judgment and learning capacity. Its carriers may, among other things, try to run away from home, lose their sense of direction and present changes in their personality leading to a state of mental confusion. In this way appears KeepingTrack, which, with a GPS pulse tracker and a camera capable of identifying when a patient leaves home, will allow the monitoring of patients diagnosed with this disease, ensuring their safety and assistance, without constant personal supervision by the caregiver, thus preserving the patient's daily autonomy. There are already several devices that serve this same purpose, but they present difficulties in terms of device portability, battery life and in maintaining an online history that is available for consultation.
  • A comprehensive VISIR bibliographical reference

    VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality) is a remote laboratory environment in use in research and academic institutions since 2001. This paper presents a comprehensive VISIR bibliographical reference, including a performance analysis, which reviews the publication data and the citation indexes, and a science mapping, that presents the cognitive structure. The procedure to retrieve, aggregate, process, and analyze data is based on documented sources and is also presented in the article, including some comments on specific issues faced while applying the proposed methodology. The paper characterizes the publication evolution over time, the most prolific authors and their networks, the main research topics, the most frequent sources, and the most cited documents. The available results show a mature and evolving collaborative network and an expansion trend that allows predicting that VISIR is not only the source of many academic and applied research publications, but also a popular and continuously developing remote laboratory and the basis of a very active community.
  • Diabetic Shoe Upper Pressures: Preliminary Approach to Identify Relative Levels of Comfort and Injury

    Diabetic foot is one of the most serious complications affecting the feet of diabetic patients. It is characterized by a progressive loss of protective skin sensitivity and requires an early diagnosis due to the imminent possibility of infection, ulceration, and amputation [1]. Frequently, the anatomical deformation of the foot and the use of misfit shoes compromise the biomechanics of the foot, causing abnormal overload and minor trauma that can precipitate ulceration. The most critical pressure points, located in the plantar and dorsal region of the foot, are already well identified. In this sense, in addition to increased clinical attention, the use of appropriate footwear is also an essential factor in preventing injuries. The shoe must have an internal length between 1 and 2 cm greater than the foot, it must be adapted to the widest part of the foot and the height of the toecap must guarantee sufficient space for the toes. The choice of shoes should be evaluated with the patient standing and preferably at the end of the day when the feet are more likely to be swollen. In more complex cases, the use of custom-made shoes should be advised
  • Experimenting in PILAR Federation: a Common Path for the Future

    The PILAR (Platform Integration of Laboratories based on the Architecture of visiR) Erasmus Plus project started in September 2016 and will last three years. The core of the PILAR project is the VISIR remote laboratory —Virtual Instruments System In Reality—. The project aims for a federation of five of the existing VISIR nodes, sharing experiments, capacity and resources among partners, and to provide access to VISIR remote lab, through PILAR consortium, to students from other educational institutions. PILAR will be the framework from which management tasks will be performed and laboratories/experiments will be shared. PILAR will also foster the Special Interest Group of VISIR under the Global Online Laboratory Consortium (GOLC) of the International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE).
