- Management Information Systems and Technologies in Public HospitalsPublication . Luzia, José; Bertuzi da Silva, Rui; Silva, Paulino; Balloni, AntónioThe purpose of the present work was to analyse the importance of the use of information systems and technologies in management procedures in the hospital sector. We therefore intended to evidence the effects of the use of the information produced by means of those instruments in the improvement of management performance and as support to decision-making. In this study, which took place under the Gesiti/Hospital international research project “Evaluation of Management Information Systems and Technologies in Hospitals”, we present the results of 5 Portuguese public hospitals on the outskirts of the Greater Oporto region, which we consider a representative sample of the area studied. The case study methodology was used in this research. With the results obtained, we may conclude that the information systems and technologies have acted as a booster mechanism for improvements in productivity and in the performance of hospital organisations. Within these public sector organisations we also found evidence of the adoption of private sector management practices.
- A Qualidade e Extensão da Divulgação da Sustentabilidade Ambiental: o caso da Indústria da AviaçãoPublication . Pereira, D.; Bandeira, Ana M.; Vale, José; Bertuzi da Silva, RuiThis study aimed to determine the extent and quality of environmental sustainability disclosure in the aviation industry through indexes influenced by the following variables: "Disclosure is made through sustainability reports and similar", "Airlines are based in an industrialized country", "Airlines are part of Strategic Alliances", "Airlines are registered in the United Nations Global Compact " and "Airlines are listed on the stock exchange". For this purpose, a mixed methodology is used, as it combines data collection through content analysis and quantitative treatment of the data, based on a sample of 72 Airlines, extracted from the "World's Top 100 Airlines 2019" ranking. The results show that the overall performance of disclosure quality and the overall performance of disclosure extent is poor due to the low level of voluntary disclosure of environmental sustainability.
- Performance management in a family business: a case studyPublication . Silva, Paulino; Bertuzi da Silva, RuiThis research, still at an early stage, and then presented in a poster format, intended to explain the management of organizational performance of a family business in the succession process using the case study method. The scripts for semi-structured interviews that will apply to managers, owners and other workers who are deemed suitable for the investigation, which include relatives of the owners of the company are being developed. For this work the model of organizational performance management developed by David Otley in 1999 [1], consisting of five questions that seek to explain the existing performance management in any organization is utilized.
- Business simulation before and after ENTRE4FUTURE PROJECT: lessons learnedPublication . Silva, Paulino; Silva, Rui Bertuzi Da; Mesquita, AnabelaThis paper presents lessons learned from the changes introduced to Business Simulation (BS) courses at ISCAP / IPP as a result of the participation in the international project “Entre4Future – Simulation for Entrepreneurship”. Besides the exchange of professional experience among teachers, researchers and students, Entre4future Project intends to develop outputs, such as teaching methodologies and innovative contents to prepare young people to be entrepreneurs. Partners from different levels of education (vocational schools, high and higher education institutions) and from the business world (Chambers of Commerce and Industry) were selected to be part of the project. BS courses are part of the Accounting and Administration degree since 2003 and methodologies used are in some way innovative, as the aim is to provide the students the possibility to work in a real (but simulated and risk free) business environment. Although some previous studies demonstrated the importance of BS for profession life of accounting and administration students, it was recognized that when it comes to develop entrepreneurial skills there were small gaps identified. In order to overcome this problem and using the knowledge acquired with the Entre4future project additional training was provided to students. After a deep analysis of the BS curriculum and the Entre4Future curriculum, additional training was provided in order to prepare students in areas they were not prepared sufficiently with BS. The paper shows the very positive perception of students to this initiative and gives some clues to a possible inclusion of this new training in BS courses, which are part of the programme of studies of the Accounting and Administration degree.
- Using a Change Management Game to Improve Human Resources Management SkillsPublication . Silva, Paulino; Bertuzi da Silva, Rui; Elger, MartinIn a very changing business environment in which mergers and acquisitions are frequent, it is fundamental for a manager to know how to deal with these happenings. It is recognized today that employees are the best asset of enterprises, and so it is fundamental to maintain them motivated especially during transforming situations. Change Management is about facts in the context of business management and administration. The focus lies on items that are not measurable and not documentable in the business world. Nevertheless, these items have a very important important impact in connection with the strategic change process of a company and their staff members. In this paper we present some lessons learned from the experience of the use of a Change Management Game at ISCAP/IPP, as a result of a partnership with Cooperative State University Baden- Württemberg, a German University. For this study, a qualitative research approach was in place, since we used qualitative methods, mainly observation and semi-structured interviews. ISCAP/IPP is a business school of higher education that provides diverse programmes of studies in business areas: accounting and management, marketing, international commerce, business communication, secretary management, etc. Nevertheless, students miss some skills related with the human resources management, which can be improved through this learning experience. There are some important issues that participants need to consider in a company change process, namely national and regional differences, company specific differences, staff functions, visible things (such as room design), not visible things (such as strategy), invisible barriers of the employees towards the change and the new, published and public opinion about the company and its staff, hidden agendas, and outside presentations. The participant team, which has the function of Change Managers guides and instructs the organisation through the different phases of the change process. The Change Management Game includes 5 phases of change: 1) Attention; 2) Motivation; 3) Qualification 4) Commitment; and 5) Internalization. In each phase participants use interventions in order to improve the level of commitment of employees. The interventions of each phase have a higher ranking focus than the individuals which have to take part. Thus before each phase of the game the team has to discuss which interventions will be applied. Afterwards the individuals who fit to the planned interventions and/or who have to take part are put in them. It is the aim of the participants to bring almost all types of human personality within the organisation to personal action in the change project. Participants need to be deeply engaged to participate as active and effective persons to perform adequately the new tasks. At ISCAP-IPP we used the Change Management Game having a multicultural and interdisciplinary background for several editions, having the participation of students from different areas of studies and from several countries, including Portugal, Germany, Romania, Lithuania, France, just to mention a few. Feedback from students so far, was very positive, as they consider to participate again in a similar experience if they have the opportunity.
- A Two-Stage DEA Model to Evaluate the Performance of Iberian BanksPublication . Moutinho, Victor; Vale, José; Bertuzi da Silva, Rui; Bandeira, Ana M.; Palhares, JoséThis paper’s goal is twofold: it aims to assess the performance of 58 Iberian banks and explore the relationship between such performance and the banks’ Intellectual Capital (IC) efficiency during a post-crisis period. As long as the authors are aware, there is a gap in the literature in exploring the relationship between banks’ global performance and IC efficiency. First, the Data Envelopment Analysis model was adopted to measure the efficiency of Iberian banks and rank them according to their performance. Data were collected digitally, specifically by using the Bankscope database provided by Bureau van Dijk. Results show that by improving their resources management practices, banks can significantly increase their efficiency. Then, fractional regressions were used to infer the relationship between IC’s efficiency and the scores obtained in the first stage. Results suggest that Iberian banks’ global performance is mainly determined by their human capital efficiency. Finally, this study stresses the importance of IC measurement to support more efficient decision-making by bank managers.
- Intellectual Capital Change Management in the Construction Industry—The Case of an Inter-Organisational CollaborationPublication . Vale, José; Barbosa, Nádia; Bertuzi da Silva, Rui; Bandeira, Ana M.; Vale, Vera TeixeiraNowadays, due to the complexity of the relationships with external entities, along with the importance that traditional media and the innovative social media have in creating competitive advantages, it is necessary for companies to collaborate in order to create Intellectual Capital (IC). Although collaboration is crucial to create IC, there is a paucity in literature regarding the effects that a specific type of collaboration may have on the IC of an organisation, specifically a franchising with a mediatic actor. Moreover, literature addressing IC creation and destruction over time is scarce, especially when applied to the construction industry. This paper’s goal is twofold: understanding the longitudinal changes of a construction SME’s Intellectual Capital, regarding its creation and destruction; analysing the impact that a specific inter-organisational collaboration franchising—with a mediatic actor may have on such IC. A single in-depth case study was conducted, allowing to conclude that the actions of an organisation can develop both Intellectual Assets and Intellectual Liabilities. It was also concluded that inter-organisational collaboration, through a franchise with an actor with experience in communication, can generate, in the long term, positive and innovative effects regarding the different IC components, namely the Relational one. More specifically, the paper allowed to ascertain that an organisation’s IC changes over time in a dynamic fashion, i.e., Intellectual Liabilities which emerged before an innovative collaboration can be transformed into Intellectual Assets and create competitive advantages. This paper contributes to stress the importance of managing IC, not only when it is created, but namely in when it can be destroyed, in a context of inter-organisational collaborations applied to a construction SME
- Improving management skills through business simulationPublication . Silva, Paulino; Bertuzi da Silva, RuiA survey was conducted among students of the Accounting and Administration undergraduate degree at ISCAP – IPP (School of Accounting and Administration of Polytechnic Institute of Porto) in order to understand their perception value of their course Business Simulation (BS). This course is provided in a business environment where students can learn by doing through the management of a company as they were in the real life, but risk-free. The learning tasks are provided in an action-oriented format to maximize the learning process. Students learn by doing a set of tasks every session and have also to produce reports and presentations during the course. BS is part of the undergraduate degree of Accounting and Administration at ISCAP – IPP since the beginning of 2003. The questionnaire we used captured the students’ perception about general and specific skills and competencies considered important for managers and accountants in the real life, about the methodology used in the course, which is totally different from the traditional form, and also about the adequacy of the course included as part of the undergraduate degree. The results showed that students’ perception is highly positive and almost all of them think they improve the skills needed for a job during the course. These results are consistent with [1] Adler and Milne’s research in which the authors found that students agree with the use of action-oriented learning tasks in order to provide them the needed attitudes, skills, and knowledge. The improvement of group skills is the most important issue for students, which can be understandable as BS is the only course from the degree in Accounting and Administration they really have to work in groups.
