  • Microbiological characterization of thermal waters
Publication . Machado, Adriana; Amorim, Manuela; Ferreira, Stephanie; Condeço, Jorge; Mota, Sandra; Moreira, Anabela; Augusto, António
Thermal waters are used for disease prevention or treatment, for rehabilitation or welfare. The health risks associated with the use of these waters depends not only on the nature of the waters, but also on the manner of its use and the immune status of users. Exposure to microorganism scan occur through inhalation, ingestion or contact. The related severity and diversity of diseases leads to the verification of bacteriological standards established by law in order to ensure its quality and safety.

The evaluation of the water quality was carried out through the research and quantification of microorganisms viable at 37ºC, Coliform Bacteria, Enterococci, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Coagulase Positive Staphylococci and the Total Number of Staphylococci.
The Rome Opinion Questionnaire for Psychiatric Wards”.

  • Microbiological evaluation of vegetable salads in school canteens
Publication . Carneiro, Mariana; Amorim, Manuela; Ferreira, Stephanie; Mota, Sandra; Moreira, Anabela; Augusto, António
Currently bacteria are the main responsible for infections and food poisoning, being a huge public health problem worldwide. Vegetables are potential vehicles of these microorganisms and their consumption, especially raw, increases contamination risk. It has been reported an increase in diseases associated with microbiological contamination by vegetables consumption. Vegetable cultivation and growth process makes them vulnerable to contamination sources that may act at any stage from planting to consumption. Salmonella, Escherichiacoli , Staphylococcus and Listeria are the microorganisms most commonly isolated from vegetables responsible for food borne diseases.
  • A meta-analysis on the role of sonication in the diagnosis of cardiac implantable electronic device-related infections
Publication . Araújo, Daniela; Martins, João P.; Ferreira, Stephanie; Mota, Sandra; Ferreira, Pedro L. ; Pimenta, Rui
One of the biggest obstacles in diagnosing Implant-Associated Infections is the lack of infection criteria and standardized diagnostic methods. These infections present a wide range of symptoms, and their diagnosis can be hampered by the formation of microbial biofilms on the surface of implants. This study aimed to provide insight into the performance of sonication in the diagnosis of infections associated with Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices, to help define a consensus on the algorithm for the microbial diagnosis of these infections. We carried out a systematic review with meta-analysis. The PRISMA methodology guidelines were followed, and an advanced search was carried out in PubMed and Web of Science, which enabled 8 articles to be included in the review, in which a meta-analysis was also carried out. QUADAS-2 was used to assess the risk of bias and effect measures were calculated to assess publication bias. The overall sensitivity of the method was 0.823 (95% CI: 0.682–0.910) and the specificity was 0.632 (95% CI: 0.506–0.743). These results suggest that sonication may offer advantages in diagnosing these infections. However, it is essential to approach these findings carefully and take into account the recommendations provided in the EHRA 2019 guidelines. This study highlights the importance of more effective diagnostic approaches for implantable medical device-associated infections to improve the quality of treatment and minimize the risks associated with these challenging medical conditions.

  • Microbiological monitoring of surfaces and food handlers
Publication . Barros, Sílvia; Amorim, Manuela; Ferreira, Stephanie; Condeço, Jorge; Mota, Sandra; Moreira, Anabela; Augusto, António
Every year, foodborne diseases affects about 48 million people in the United States alone, usually associated with microbiological infection or intoxication The increase in demand for catering services has contributed to cases increase (Kleter & Marvin, 2009; Lund, A.C. Baird-Parker, 2000; Newell et al., 2010). These data show the importance of quality assurance from food production to the consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account special care towards the environment (air), facilities, equipment, surfaces, utensils and handlers throughout the processing by cleaning processes and disinfection (Kleter & Marvin, 2009).
