- Supporting collaboration in multilingual ontology specification: the conceptME approachPublication . Moreira Silva, Manuel; Soares, António Lucas; Costa, RuteDespite the availability of tools, resources and techniques aimed at the construction of ontological artifacts, developing a shared conceptualization of a given reality still raises questions about the principles and methods that support the initial phases of conceptualization. These questions become more complex when the conceptualization occurs in a multilingual setting. To tackle these issues a collaborative platform – conceptME - was developed where terminological and knowledge representation processes support domain experts throughout a conceptualization framework, allowing the inclusion of multilingual data to promote knowledge sharing and enhance conceptualization.
- Localização de ontologias - elementos para a construção de uma abordagemPublication . Silva, ManuelO desenvolvimento de recursos multilingues robustos para fazer face às exigências crescentes na complexidade dos processos intra e inter-organizacionais é um processo complexo que obriga a um aumento da qualidade nos modos de interacção e partilha dos recursos das organizações, através, por exemplo, de um maior envolvimento dos diferentes interlocutores em formas eficazes e inovadoras de colaboração. É um processo em que se identificam vários problemas e dificuldades, como sendo, no caso da criação de bases de dados lexicais multilingues, o desenvolvimento de uma arquitectura capaz de dar resposta a um conjunto vasto de questões linguísticas, como a polissemia, os padrões lexicais ou os equivalentes de tradução. Estas questões colocam-se na construção quer dos recursos terminológicos, quer de ontologias multilingues. No caso da construção de uma ontologia em diferentes línguas, processo no qual focalizaremos a nossa atenção, as questões e a complexidade aumentam, dado o tipo e propósitos do artefacto semântico, os elementos a localizar (conceitos e relações conceptuais) e o contexto em que o processo de localização ocorre. Pretendemos, assim, com este artigo, analisar o conceito e o processo de localização no contexto dos sistemas de gestão do conhecimento baseados em ontologias, tendo em atenção o papel central da terminologia no processo de localização, as diferentes abordagens e modelos propostos, bem como as ferramentas de base linguística que apoiam a implementação do processo. Procuraremos, finalmente, estabelecer alguns paralelismos entre o processo tradicional de localização e o processo de localização de ontologias, para melhor o situar e definir.
- Integrating terminological methods in a framework for collaborative development of semi-formal ontologiesPublication . To tackle this issue a collaborative platform was developed where terminological and knowledge representation processes support domain experts throughout a conceptualization framework. In this article we describe the integration of a terminological method to support experts in eliciting and organizing concepts of their domain. The method is based on a linguistic analysis of textual resources with the help of a term extraction tool and by highlighting markers of relations between concepts. An application scenario is then presented to illustrate the connection between the terminological processes and the knowledge representation processes without blurring the theoretical distinction between terms and concepts.
- Promoting dynamic CLIL courses in portuguese Higher Education: from design and training to implementationPublication . Arau Ribeiro, María Del Carmen; Silva, Manuel; Morgado, Margarida; Coelho, MargaridaThis article demonstrates the method, procedures and results of a national research project aiming to implement Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) courses in Portuguese higher education (HE). ReCLes.pt, the Network Association of Language Centres in HE in Portugal, carried out a review of the literature and an extensive needs analysis based on interviews with administrators and subject teachers to substantiate this need for CLIL in HE. The irst 10-hour CLIL teacher training pilot courses, conceived of as Communities of Practice, involved learning to deal with approaches to teaching language and content by scaffolding and applying a terminology-based approach, all of which was systematized in a collaboratively written training guide. - Communicating (in) wine tourism: what are the paths for harmonising the sector and the Translation Process?Publication . Pataco, Teresa; Galanes Santos, Iolanda; Moreira Silva, ManuelWine tourism is an emerging area of specialisation to which several areas of knowledge (marketing, economics, anthropology, viticulture, etc.) converge. Portugal’s wine culture has a long tradition and is internationally recognised, placing it at the forefront of economic, professional, and academic initiatives in this sector. Communication between specialists and between specialists and national and international wine tourists requires an international terminology that is, simultaneously, mindful of tradition and that favours inclusive, efficient, and competitive trade exchanges. 226 Our research aims to contribute to the terminological harmonisation of Portuguese wine tourism, even though no ISO/IPQ standards have been issued in this emerging transdisciplinary area. In this article, two comparable academic sub-corpora (10 theses) on wine tourism will be analysed. Their comparison was carried out with the Sketch Engine programme, which allows, in addition to corpus management, to extract terms, identify keywords and represent their conceptual organisation. Our methodological approach included the analysis of the results based on the 50 most relevant terms in each of the corpus. Ten case studies taken from the corpora emphasise the diversity of terminogenic patterns in each language, the influence of cultural factors in the specialised wine tourism terminology of both languages, and, lastly, the influence of the English language on Portuguese wine tourism terminology. These results should be considered in the proposal of harmonised terminologies and in the translation of specialised wine tourism discourse.
- Terminology Management for Social Media Communication During Covid 19 Pandemic: A Case Study with a Portuguese Higher Education InstitutionPublication . Pinto, Susana; Tavares, Célia; Moreira Silva, ManuelThe process of attracting new students is a constant challenge for Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is challenging because it implies the definition of a communication strategy that uses both traditional and digital tactics to promote the institution and its educational offer. Considering the constraints resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, HEIs had to change their strategies and, in a short period, create digital communication mechanisms to facilitate new students' access to relevant information about the institution. This paper intends thus to determine and evaluate which are the predominant factors in seeking information about a degree in business sciences, specifically regarding the Porto Accounting and Business School in Portugal. To do that, we will consider the various factors that tend to influence the decision-making process of choosing a higher education degree, namely: the institutional website, social networks (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), other contact mechanisms (live chat, e-mail, text messages, ZOOM videoconference) and alumni testimonials. This study will also consider the role of terminology and positive language to obtain a successful communication strategy for social media. The analysis of these factors, combined with research developed with a focus group of high school students' graduates to assess their online preferences, will allow the presentation of a digital communication proposal whose purpose is to attract and retain new students. This proposal will consider the role of a strategic terminology management approach to capture students' attention when responding to their social media preferences. This paper results from the perception that being aware of the students' online preferences and communication skills and needs is essential to enhance the quality of the digital communication that HEIs promote in social media channels, especially in a time frame as specific and multifaceted as the one that we are currently experiencing.
- TerminoCLIL: a terminology-based approach to CLILPublication . Moreira Silva, Manuel; Albuquerque, AlexandraConsidering the new European educational context deriving from the Bologna Process, the urgency of improving university students’ Foreign Languages (FL) competences and the unsatisfactory results of present-day methodological approaches to FL teaching and learning, it seems that the ground is, as Morgado and Coelho (2012) state, ripe for new perspectives in this area. CLIL appears as one of these approaches – more content oriented, more able to meaningfully integrate language and content and to lead to the desired FL proficiency and pluricultural learning outcomes. It is also based on a new paradigm: that of the language user, rather than the language learner (Moore and Dooly 2010).
- Desafios ao multilinguismo na gestão e partilha do conhecimento: contributos terminológicosPublication . Silva, ManuelO avanço na direcção de uma cultura de gestão da informação verdadeiramente multilingue, resultado do estabelecimento de espaços multilingues de acesso à informação, caracterizados pela heterogeneidade e multiculturalidade, como é o caso dos sistemas de classificação de organizações globais, aumenta a necessidade de existência de metodologias e sistemas de organização da informação e do conhecimento que facilitem e tornem mais eficiente o uso destes recursos. Neste ambiente, a língua, meio por excelência da comunicação humana, e a terminologia, enquanto elemento nuclear à recolha, estruturação e disseminação do conhecimento, representam um papel de mediação cada vez mais importante na comunicação entre os vários interlocutores e na comunicação homemmáquina e um elemento essencial à descoberta e criação do conhecimento, bem como à sua eficiente conceptualização, representação, transmissão e reutilização. Pretendemos, neste contexto, por um lado, analisar o papel da terminologia e das metodologias e recursos de base terminológica na resposta aos desafios que resultam dos processos de gestão e partilha do conhecimento que se desenrolam em ambientes multilingues, e, por outro, discutir os possíveis contributos destas metodologias para o processo de conceptualização e representação multilingue do conhecimento de um domínio.
