  • Role of intercultural mediation in problem solving in a transatlantic network
Publication . Ribeiro, Sandra; Noronha Cunha, Suzana; Moreira Silva, Manuel; Bigotte Chorão, Graça
Working in a multidisciplinary collaborative project through virtual exchange encompasses many advantages as well as some disadvantages. One of the many problems that might occur in virtual cooperation settings was identified as cultural mismatches, listed by Chase, Macfadyen, Reeder, and Roche (2002) into nine categories. Some of these mismatches were found during the Trans-Atlantic Pacific Project1 (TAPP), a collaborative and active learning bidirectional platform, where students from Portuguese and North American universities have been cooperating for several years to enhance their technical and linguistic competences whilst developing intercultural skills. By bringing together future Translators and Technical Writers into a multicultural simulated setting, students are given the opportunity to learn from each other and interact via technology-mediated communication. Yet, this endeavour revealed to be extremely demanding mostly due to cultural misunderstandings that occurred during virtual communication exchanges. Accordingly, a cultural mediation intervention plan was developed and implemented by the authors as a strategy to overcome these problems and strengthen virtual teamwork interaction. This plan was designed to raise cultural awareness of the self and the other and was divided into 4 separate phases: 1) the cultural awareness initial stage, followed by 2) peer-to-peer exchange of the pre-learning questionnaires, 3) the completion of the Cultural Self-Awareness Questionnaire, concluding with 4) the analysis of the results and discussion in class. This study addresses the Cultural Self-Awareness Questionnaire. The results and outcomes of this questionnaire are analysed and discussed and new avenues for research will be presented and proposed.
  • Exploring the Iinnovative aspects of CV distributed ledgers based on blockchain
Publication . Silva, F. O.; Pereira, Rui Humberto; Gonçalves, Maria José Angélico; Silva, Amélia Ferreira Da; Moreira Silva, Manuel
Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology aimed at decentralization and transparency. A blockchain record is immutable, which means that once created by an entity, no other can change what enables legitimacy checking. These are key features to ensure the accuracy of records with sensitive information such as the issuance of records of competencies and qualification certificates when issued by certified entities (education institutions, professional formation schools, companies, etc.). This paper aims to identify the most innovative aspects in CV records management systems based on a blockchain paradigm. In order to engage this objective, an assertive literature review of the CORDIS (The Community Research and Development Information Service (https://cordis.europa.eu/)) database was performed and discussed. The results are depicted and enable orientations to future work.

  • From backpacker to digital nomad-footpaths of a digital transformation
Publication . Barroso, Catarina Fernandes; Moreira Silva, Manuel
As globalization provided a more efficient path to mobility meanwhile facilitating the search for information, the urge to travel and seek new cultures became intense. People from around the world engaged in the act of traveling more deeply than what was known previously. The backpacker phenomenon evolved into a lifestyle, as being a tourist simply was not fulfilling for this new generation of travelers; an evolution of Cohen’s “drifters”. Backpacking culture has been growing exponentially over the years, becoming the answer for young, creative, and adventurous individuals to find freedom and life purpose. Through the creation of cowork spaces, the objective is to develop an environment of mutual help, embracing new connections and, above all, strengthen productivity. This article aims at analyzing digital nomadism in the context of digital transformation and present a case study - Selina -, as an example of innovation and creativity from the hospitality business. Our focus will be an approach to the organizational culture of the company which appropriates itself and encourages new behaviors (coworking) as a way to attract digital nomads for its business.
  • Communicating (in) wine tourism: what are the paths for harmonising the sector and the Translation Process?
Publication . Pataco, Teresa; Galanes Santos, Iolanda; Moreira Silva, Manuel
Wine tourism is an emerging area of specialisation to which several areas of knowledge (marketing, economics, anthropology, viticulture, etc.) converge. Portugal’s wine culture has a long tradition and is internationally recognised, placing it at the forefront of economic, professional, and academic initiatives in this sector. Communication between specialists and between specialists and national and international wine tourists requires an international terminology that is, simultaneously, mindful of tradition and that favours inclusive, efficient, and competitive trade exchanges. 226 Our research aims to contribute to the terminological harmonisation of Portuguese wine tourism, even though no ISO/IPQ standards have been issued in this emerging transdisciplinary area. In this article, two comparable academic sub-corpora (10 theses) on wine tourism will be analysed. Their comparison was carried out with the Sketch Engine programme, which allows, in addition to corpus management, to extract terms, identify keywords and represent their conceptual organisation. Our methodological approach included the analysis of the results based on the 50 most relevant terms in each of the corpus. Ten case studies taken from the corpora emphasise the diversity of terminogenic patterns in each language, the influence of cultural factors in the specialised wine tourism terminology of both languages, and, lastly, the influence of the English language on Portuguese wine tourism terminology. These results should be considered in the proposal of harmonised terminologies and in the translation of specialised wine tourism discourse.
  • Business Intelligence como driver da Análise de Indicadores Académicos
Publication .
  • Terminology Management for Social Media Communication During Covid 19 Pandemic: A Case Study with a Portuguese Higher Education Institution
Publication . Pinto, Susana; Tavares, Célia; Moreira Silva, Manuel
The process of attracting new students is a constant challenge for Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is challenging because it implies the definition of a communication strategy that uses both traditional and digital tactics to promote the institution and its educational offer. Considering the constraints resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, HEIs had to change their strategies and, in a short period, create digital communication mechanisms to facilitate new students' access to relevant information about the institution. This paper intends thus to determine and evaluate which are the predominant factors in seeking information about a degree in business sciences, specifically regarding the Porto Accounting and Business School in Portugal. To do that, we will consider the various factors that tend to influence the decision-making process of choosing a higher education degree, namely: the institutional website, social networks (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), other contact mechanisms (live chat, e-mail, text messages, ZOOM videoconference) and alumni testimonials. This study will also consider the role of terminology and positive language to obtain a successful communication strategy for social media. The analysis of these factors, combined with research developed with a focus group of high school students' graduates to assess their online preferences, will allow the presentation of a digital communication proposal whose purpose is to attract and retain new students. This proposal will consider the role of a strategic terminology management approach to capture students' attention when responding to their social media preferences. This paper results from the perception that being aware of the students' online preferences and communication skills and needs is essential to enhance the quality of the digital communication that HEIs promote in social media channels, especially in a time frame as specific and multifaceted as the one that we are currently experiencing.
  • Digital-distance-education: a step back?
Publication . Bastos, Susana; Moreira Silva, Manuel; Santos de Oliveira, Helena Maria; Caggiano, Valeria; Poza-Lujan, Jose-Luis
In recent years, educational research has focused on implementing digitalization in education. However, the imposed practice of distance learning due to COVID 19 has shown that distance teaching still has a long path to follow to evolve. The digital platforms and methodologies available for use are still far from promoting real interaction and a way to manage emotions at a distance - the essence of face-to-face teaching. Based on the last months' challenging experience of distance teaching, it is clear that HEIs have to rethink their actions in this field and plan ahead. To help build an answer, we have developed a study to assess the impact that this time of digital distance learning has had on the lives of students and teachers and the results it has brought to academic and social life. The study was developed using questionnaires and interviews with students who, in the last months, have experienced distance learning with synchronous classes and whose evaluation was almost exclusively carried out at distance.

Methodology of the data preparation: 1. Data from each country survey was exported to IBM SPSS (using the syntax file provided by Limesurvey when exporting data to SPSS). 2. Qualitative variables Q00 and Q02 were automatically recorded into numerical form. 3. A binary variable “Completed” was created from the “submitdate”, using “recode into different variable” (Missing ->0, ELSE->1) to mark the complete answers from the incomplete 4. All string variables with Likert scales were transformed into numerical variables, using the “automatic recode” feature of IBM SPSS. Options ``Treat blank as user missing” and “Use same recording scheme” were activated. Then, all remaining codes for missing values or non-available data were coded with SYSMIS using “Recode into the same variable”. 5. The three questions S01c, L01c, and T02m had the scale of answers with an inverted logic. It was necessary to create new variables inverting the scale, using “Recode into different variables”. (1->5, 2->4, 4->2, 5->1, ELSE-> copy) 6. Measure of the numerical variables was corrected. 7. The labels of the questions were simplified (removing the answer options and non necessary text) 8. New variables for the constructs were computed using “Compute variable” with the mean of the variables that contribute to each construct in each group. (The syntax file “Data preparation.sps” can be used to automatize the procedure of data preparation. Just change the path in FILE=’…’ to your full directory path. The formulas for building the constructs are in lines 80-372.)
