- KeepingTrack: Helping dementia autonomyPublication . Sousa, Maria; Bastos, António; Rocha, Pedro; Bártolo, João; Peixoto, Sónia; Guimarães, Pedro; Marques, ArcelinaCurrently, the most developed countries are facing an increase in average life expectancy. This increase is mainly due to high technological advances in terms of techniques for preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases. In this way, more and more degenerative diseases will appear, including dementia. This disease affects memory, reasoning, judgment and learning capacity. Its carriers may, among other things, try to run away from home, lose their sense of direction and present changes in their personality leading to a state of mental confusion. In this way appears KeepingTrack, which, with a GPS pulse tracker and a camera capable of identifying when a patient leaves home, will allow the monitoring of patients diagnosed with this disease, ensuring their safety and assistance, without constant personal supervision by the caregiver, thus preserving the patient's daily autonomy. There are already several devices that serve this same purpose, but they present difficulties in terms of device portability, battery life and in maintaining an online history that is available for consultation.
- UVMove: Disinfection robotPublication . Terroso, David; Sousa, João; Fernandes, Ana; Lázaro Jacob, Frederico; Silveira, António; Guimarães, Pedro; Marques, Maria ArcelinaHomes are an environment where many human activities take place, leaving them exposed to infections and other diseases, putting at risk the health of its residents, especially those who have a more fragile health [1]. Infection through the floor presents a high risk of contamination, and can occur through vomit, blood, feces, and waste that humans or pets may carry into the house [2], [3].The development of this project started with the idealization on how to reduce the number of infections occurred with origin on the floor, without the use of chemical products that can lead to intoxication of children and negative consequences for the environment [4]. Then, many ideas came up but only the imple mentation of a robot with minimal human contact remained, which led to the UVMove. It is a small size robot capable of disinfecting the floor where it operates, without the use of water or chemicals, dedicated only to the automatic dis infection with ultraviolet radiation. However, room for improvement is left, changes that could not be done with the available resources, like improving the disinfection effectiveness and its battery autonomy, with possible implementation in hospitals and houses, in the future.
- ABHA - Advanced Biomechanical Hand AssistantPublication . Correia, Vasco; Alves, Lucas; Guimarães, Pedro; Vieira, Diogo; Oliveira, Diego; Marques, Arcelina; Lima, RafaelThe outlook for the future of physiotherapy is very promising, with a gradual increase in its demand. This trend is mainly explained by the fact that there is an increasingly active and ageing population in developed countries. The growing demand for this area will consequently lead to the need for many resources, both human and economic. Currently, there are several bionic hands with various uses and functions, and most of these hands are programmed to respond to the movements of a particular user. Besides, most of the applications of medical robotics are mainly directed to the area of surgery. With this proposal, we intend to simplify the whole physiotherapy or rehabilitation process. For that, we have developed an equipment capable of helping the patient to perform the exercises in the comfort of his home, but in an equally efficient way. The operation of the system consists of autonomous use by the patient, who must wear the glove and replicate the exercises, predefined for each user, performed by the biomechanical hand. Having the possibility to define the exercises, ABHA is transferable and can be used by more than one patient.
- The Internship Subject in a CTeSP CoursePublication . Jacob, Frederico Lázaro; Alberto, António Silveira D. P.; Guimarães, PedroIn any higher education degree, the internship subject is designed to provide stu-dents the opportunity to work as a company labourer, but is not considered an em-ployee, however, he/she must respect the rules of his/her host institution, and to get more hands-on work experience. In engineering courses, an internship is an on-job training similar to an apprenticeship, more often taken up by students during one semester, usually the last of the course, to supplement their formal education and expose them to the professional world. Therefore, the relationship between educa-tional institutions and public or private companies is considered as strategic to be possible to train students with practical skills, but also with some theoretical knowledge. In addition, the internships are also a form of interaction that students can use to guide them through the transition to a career. The goal of this study is to present a new kind of higher education program in Portugal, the Higher Technical Professional Course (CTeSP), but also to explore the perception and challenges faced by students in undertaking an internship in one of these courses.
- In search of an efficient assessment method for laboratory activitiesPublication . Alberto, António Silveira D.P.; Guimarães, Pedro M.S.; Jacob, Frederico L.There is a consensus in academia about the importance of laboratory activities in the learning process. At all levels of education, learning by doing is vitally important for obtaining the necessary technical skills expected. There is less agreement on how to assess the student’s performance and the skills developed in these tasks. Thus, this paper deals with the importance of assessing laboratory work and the best way to do it. To this purpose, an experience carried out in a physics subject is shared. This has the peculiar characteristic of having many students every academic year (around 300) performing experiments in the laboratory. The analysis is done following documented methodologies, and a corresponding and correct quantitative assessment can be determined for each student at the end of the subject.
- HANDCARE: Post stroke upper limb rehabilitation devicePublication . Lobão, Rebeca; Patacho, Maria; Pedro, Mariana; Oliveira, Ana; Jacob, Frederico; Guimarães, Pedro; Marques, ArcelinaStroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. In Portugal, the Portuguese Stroke Society (SPAVC) estimates that approximately three Portuguese individuals experience a stroke every hour, resulting in fatality for one and debilitating sequelae for another. The sequelae of stroke hinder patients from performing their normal daily activities, thereby affecting their quality of life. There are limited exercises that enable patients to autonomously improve their condition. Therefore, it is imperative to identify more effective treatments to enhance the quality of life for stroke patients. In this work, we describe the development of a rehabilitation device for the upper limb post-stroke. Conventional rehabilitation methods often possess disadvantages, primarily due to the use of repetitive exercises and bulky equipment requiring the assistance of a physiotherapist. However, the proposed device allows the patient to regain a certain level of autonomy in the affected limb through a game controlled by the upper limb. Additionally, the device records the patient's progress throughout the sessions, which can be monitored by a specialized healthcare professional. This rehabilitation device is expected to provide a more accessible and enjoyable approach to assist stroke patients in recovering their motor skills in the affected upper limb, thereby promoting a significant improvement in their quality of life.
- Home Assistive Robot for Alzheimer's PatientsPublication . Nóbrega, Antónia; Portela, Mariana; Tavares, Sofia; Guimarães, Pedro; Marques, Maria Arcelina; Lázaro Jacob, FredericoWith the increase in the senior population, especially patients with dementia and Alzheimer's, healthcare professionals are increasingly overwhelmed. Existing assistive technologies to improve these patients’ quality of life and their caregivers are scarce given the daily challenges they face. To tackle this issue, a domestic assistive robot was developed for Alzheimer's patients – AlzheimerAlly - which encompasses the functionalities of a service robot, and a companion robot. AlzheimerAlly's functionalities involve tracking continuous monitoring of the patient's anatomical points to detect the type of movement and medication intake. The movement of the robot follows the movement of the patient. Additionally, the graphical interface allows cognitive and stimulation tests to be carried out. The medication dispenser, implemented, contains compartments, each with a LED. Finally, there is a website, which allows you to enter and access relevant data about the medication dispenser and cognitive tests. The functionalities described were thoroughly tested, demonstrating effective implementation. However, the prototype still remains subject to improvements. Although AlzheimerAlly requires improvements, it is already a significant and functional contribution to the area of care for Alzheimer's patients. This robot represents innovation and improvement in the quality of life of patients, their caregivers and healthcare professionals.
