Publication . Costa, Vânia; Pereira, Raquel; Loureiro, Isabel Sofia; Campinho, Sara; Moura, Andreia; Mira, Maria do Rosário; Silva, Goretti; Silva, Susana
An in-depth understanding of the business dynamics of a given sector enables key stakeholders to define appropriate strategies for its development, promotion and consolidation. This study aims to analyse the Portuguese tourism and hospitality sector, characterising the companies and their business dynamics between 2011 and 2022. It uses a Related-Samples Friedman‘s Two-Way Analysis of Variance by Ranks to identify any statistically significant differences between the subsegments of Hotels and Restaurants, Recreational and Cultural Activities, and Transports and Logistics using specific competitiveness indicators. The results show significant differences between the subsegments in some indicators. The sector is resilient and plays a key role in recovering from highly impactful challenges. Micro and small companies employ thousands of people and make hotels and restaurants a key subsegment of activity for the sector. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the tourism sector, providing valuable information to industry players and researchers.

This was a quantitative study, with an online survey applied to students, teachers, and professionals. It was a convenience sample with 150 participants. Data were analyzed statistically with IBM SPSS version 28.0. Our results suggested that students, professionals, and trainers value digital, green, and social and cultural skills. With reference to digital skills, all participants considered themselves having an intermediate or advanced level of proficiency. All the participants considered themselves having an intermediate or advanced level of green skills. Regarding social and cultural skills, all the participants considered themselves having an advanced level of proficiency. Therefore, professionals reported higher levels of proficiency in all skills. In the same way, in the tourism sector, we observed higher proficiency levels of skills. To summarize, educational, sectorial, and entrepreneurial sectors recognize the relevance of digital, green, and social-cultural skills for the tourism and hospitality industry. With these skills, the sector will be more prepared to implement sustainability practices and achieve sustainability goals. Additionally, entrepreneurs should value these skills in professionals, and education institutions should integrate the development of these skills into their curricula.

Publication . Fernandes, Joel; Albuquerque, Eduardo B.; Silva, Amândio; Barroso, Andreia; Morim, Beatriz; Ferreira, Bruna; Pereira, Érica; Lopes, Gabriela
Tourism has developed in the last decade (2011/2020), allowing the growth of different destinations. Therefore, the main objective of this article is to understand the main characteristics of tourism supply and demand in Portugal and identify its importance and contribution to the Portuguese economy, through the comparison of data from 2019 with that from 2022 (pre-Covid-19 and post-Covid-19). In this article, we opted for a qualitative methodology, in a systematic review of the literature, and a quantitative methodology, in the analysis and interpretation of the various official statistics on Portuguese tourism. Regarding the results, the importance of the sector can be seen in the comparison of overnight stays from January to September of 2019 and 2022, where there was an increase in demand. Regarding revenues in the same period (January to September), it shows that in 2022 these were 14.4 billion euros, while those recorded in 2019 were 12.66 billion euros. In 2022 it was found that the United Kingdom is the country that stands out most in terms of international overnight stays in Portugal, and thus the one that contributed most to tourism revenue. We conclude that there was, in 2022 as compared to 2019, a significant growth in revenue that shows a positive relationship between the tourism sector and its impact on the Portuguese economy.

Publication . Fernandes, Joel; Albuquerque, Eduardo B.; Silva, Amândio F. C. da; Sousa, Gisela P. de; Anjo, Manuel M.; Brito, Miguel A.; Cardoso, Miguel P.
The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism sector of Portugal and Greece. Both countries have similar tourism demand and supply characteristics and the industry is very important for their economies. In the methodology, we reviewed the literature of the topic and analyzed several statistical data for the period of 2018 to 2021. The main results confirm that in both countries, tourism is the backbone of the economic activity, having a considerable weight on the gross domestic product. Regarding Covid-19´s impact on the tourism sector in 2020 and 2021, we noted that Portugal fared better than Greece in terms of revenue, even though the number of arrivals was lower in the former than in the latter. The number of hotel establishments increased in Greece and reduced in Portugal, during the same period. We conclude that in the tourism sector, Portugal fared better during the Covid-19 pandemic while Greece increased its investment even though there was a very high uncertainty in the market.
  • Teachers’ perceptions of remote learning during the pandemic: a case study
Publication . Silva, Susana; Fernandes, Joana; Peres, Paula; Lima, Vanda; Silva, Cândida
The closure of higher education institutions (HEIs) due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to visible changes in pedagogical practices. With the lockdown, there was ambiguity and disagreement about the workload of teachers and students, and about what to teach and what strategies to select. For most instructors, the first challenge was to recreate the face-to-face experience. Worldwide, most universities have speedily adopted synchronous and asynchronous communication modes. Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Cisco, Webex, Zoom, and Moodle were among the most used tools. The present study is based upon a quantitative approach, and it intends to analyse teachers’ perceptions of remote teaching during the first pandemic period. Data were collected through an online questionnaire during June and July 2020. The questionnaire had 27 questions divided into three main sections: sociodemographic characterization, e-Learning strategies, and remote assessment. The study population was teachers of a Portuguese HEI. A random sample was used with 547 participants. The main conclusions show that the less experienced teachers are, the more satisfied they feel with remote classes and remote assessment. On the other hand, the most experienced teachers used more tools during the remote teaching period and developed more strategies to perform remote assessment. Regarding the overall assessment of the emergency remote teaching, the participants consider that it was a positive period, and they were moderately satisfied with remote classes and the strategies and tools used during this period.
  • The influence of company size on its internationalization capacity: a comprehensive view on Portugal
Publication . Fernandes, Joel; Albuquerque, Eduardo B.; Silva, Amândio F. C.
In the competitive environment that companies operate today, there is a need to adopt internationalization strategies to enable consolidation in diversified markets. The internationalization process is part of a relevant strategy for companies, has several implications and is influenced by innumerable specific aspects, namely by the behavior of companies, by their culture and structure, as well as by their leadership, but it is on the organization structure that we find one of the most relevant features: the dimension (size) of companies. Based on a qualitative methodology, we interviewed managers of the furniture manufacturing industry. We concluded that companies value increase in size; nevertheless, for cultural reasons, they are still resistant to such an increase. For increasing their size, companies value several instruments, such as: strategic alliances/corporate cooperation; fusions and acquisitions; and risk capital interventions. This work is an eye opener about the need to educate and train entrepreneurs in the Portuguese industrial sector and to bring about an awareness of the benefits of formation, training, expansion and diversification in order to be able to compete on a global basis.
  • The portuguese’s behavior towards travel agencies
Publication . Gavina, Beatriz; Silva, Susana
It is stated that tourism has greatly grown in Portugal. Thus, one must ponder if the Portuguese use traditional travel agencies or online travel agencies. As such, the main objective of this study is to characterize the Portuguese’s behavior towards travel agencies, hence the use of a quantitative methodology. Gender, income, and promotions influence the Portuguese’s decision on whether to purchase in a specific type of travel agency, being that price is not the most relevant factor. While this study is relevant to the current lack of literature, there must be further studies on this theme.
