Gregorka, Lea; Silva, Susana; Silva, CândidaEmployer branding is a marketing strategy that helps employers stay competitive in their markets. Although it is a concept used for over 20 years, its process and consequences have not yet been fully scrutinized. This study characterizes the employer branding implementation and the employers' perspective on it. By conducting ten semi-structured, in-depth interviews, the authors examine not only how employer branding practices have been applied, but also the role of human resources management in the process and used employee attraction and retention practices. The results suggest that although the employer branding process is not clearly structured, some stages can be identified as common. For that reason, the authors outline a stage divided framework and analyse each one of the identified stages. Furthermore, practical insights are provided about the company's departments roles and link them to the current state of the art. Finally, the authors suggest future investigation in particular stages of employer branding.

- The importance of shift work: the hospitality sectorPublication . Martins, Dora; Amaro, Sofia; Silva, SusanaThis study explores the importance of shift work in the organizational context of the hospitality sector. To answer its four research objectives: (1) to identify the degree of satisfaction with the shift work regime; (2) to characterize individual motivations for doing shift work; (3) to understand the impact of shift work on the worker’s physical, mental, social well-being and family environment and (4) to identify the willingness for choosing shift work a survey was developed, published online and it gathered the answers of 153 shift workers in the hospitality sector. The results indicate that the main motivation to work in shifts is related to the requirement of the function itself. The degree of satisfaction of workers doing shift work tends to decrease when they evaluate their satisfaction with the balance between work life and the other dimensions - personal, family, and social life. Most respondents say that if they could choose, they would not work in shifts, considering its negative effects on their physical and mental wellbeing, as well as on their family and social well-being. From the results obtained, we will contribute to the literature on shift work by showing the need for greater organizational support, be it at the level of physical conditions of work or the level of benefits promoting social well-being for this category of workers.
- The portuguese’s behavior towards travel agenciesPublication . Gavina, Beatriz; Silva, SusanaIt is stated that tourism has greatly grown in Portugal. Thus, one must ponder if the Portuguese use traditional travel agencies or online travel agencies. As such, the main objective of this study is to characterize the Portuguese’s behavior towards travel agencies, hence the use of a quantitative methodology. Gender, income, and promotions influence the Portuguese’s decision on whether to purchase in a specific type of travel agency, being that price is not the most relevant factor. While this study is relevant to the current lack of literature, there must be further studies on this theme.
- Teachers’ perceptions of remote learning during the pandemic: a case studyPublication . Silva, Susana; Fernandes, Joana; Peres, Paula; Lima, Vanda; Silva, CândidaThe closure of higher education institutions (HEIs) due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to visible changes in pedagogical practices. With the lockdown, there was ambiguity and disagreement about the workload of teachers and students, and about what to teach and what strategies to select. For most instructors, the first challenge was to recreate the face-to-face experience. Worldwide, most universities have speedily adopted synchronous and asynchronous communication modes. Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Cisco, Webex, Zoom, and Moodle were among the most used tools. The present study is based upon a quantitative approach, and it intends to analyse teachers’ perceptions of remote teaching during the first pandemic period. Data were collected through an online questionnaire during June and July 2020. The questionnaire had 27 questions divided into three main sections: sociodemographic characterization, e-Learning strategies, and remote assessment. The study population was teachers of a Portuguese HEI. A random sample was used with 547 participants. The main conclusions show that the less experienced teachers are, the more satisfied they feel with remote classes and remote assessment. On the other hand, the most experienced teachers used more tools during the remote teaching period and developed more strategies to perform remote assessment. Regarding the overall assessment of the emergency remote teaching, the participants consider that it was a positive period, and they were moderately satisfied with remote classes and the strategies and tools used during this period.
- The influence of company size on its internationalization capacity: a comprehensive view on PortugalPublication . Fernandes, Joel; Albuquerque, Eduardo B.; Silva, Amândio F. C.In the competitive environment that companies operate today, there is a need to adopt internationalization strategies to enable consolidation in diversified markets. The internationalization process is part of a relevant strategy for companies, has several implications and is influenced by innumerable specific aspects, namely by the behavior of companies, by their culture and structure, as well as by their leadership, but it is on the organization structure that we find one of the most relevant features: the dimension (size) of companies. Based on a qualitative methodology, we interviewed managers of the furniture manufacturing industry. We concluded that companies value increase in size; nevertheless, for cultural reasons, they are still resistant to such an increase. For increasing their size, companies value several instruments, such as: strategic alliances/corporate cooperation; fusions and acquisitions; and risk capital interventions. This work is an eye opener about the need to educate and train entrepreneurs in the Portuguese industrial sector and to bring about an awareness of the benefits of formation, training, expansion and diversification in order to be able to compete on a global basis.
- The impact of Covid-19 on the tourism activity in Portugal and Greece: a comparative studyPublication . Fernandes, Joel; Albuquerque, Eduardo B.; Silva, Amândio F. C. da; Sousa, Gisela P. de; Anjo, Manuel M.; Brito, Miguel A.; Cardoso, Miguel P.The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism sector of Portugal and Greece. Both countries have similar tourism demand and supply characteristics and the industry is very important for their economies. In the methodology, we reviewed the literature of the topic and analyzed several statistical data for the period of 2018 to 2021. The main results confirm that in both countries, tourism is the backbone of the economic activity, having a considerable weight on the gross domestic product. Regarding Covid-19´s impact on the tourism sector in 2020 and 2021, we noted that Portugal fared better than Greece in terms of revenue, even though the number of arrivals was lower in the former than in the latter. The number of hotel establishments increased in Greece and reduced in Portugal, during the same period. We conclude that in the tourism sector, Portugal fared better during the Covid-19 pandemic while Greece increased its investment even though there was a very high uncertainty in the market.
- The contribution of tourism to the Portuguese economy: comparison between 2019 and 2022 (pre-Covid-19 and post-Covid-19)Publication . Fernandes, Joel; Albuquerque, Eduardo B.; Silva, Amândio; Barroso, Andreia; Morim, Beatriz; Ferreira, Bruna; Pereira, Érica; Lopes, GabrielaTourism has developed in the last decade (2011/2020), allowing the growth of different destinations. Therefore, the main objective of this article is to understand the main characteristics of tourism supply and demand in Portugal and identify its importance and contribution to the Portuguese economy, through the comparison of data from 2019 with that from 2022 (pre-Covid-19 and post-Covid-19). In this article, we opted for a qualitative methodology, in a systematic review of the literature, and a quantitative methodology, in the analysis and interpretation of the various official statistics on Portuguese tourism. Regarding the results, the importance of the sector can be seen in the comparison of overnight stays from January to September of 2019 and 2022, where there was an increase in demand. Regarding revenues in the same period (January to September), it shows that in 2022 these were 14.4 billion euros, while those recorded in 2019 were 12.66 billion euros. In 2022 it was found that the United Kingdom is the country that stands out most in terms of international overnight stays in Portugal, and thus the one that contributed most to tourism revenue. We conclude that there was, in 2022 as compared to 2019, a significant growth in revenue that shows a positive relationship between the tourism sector and its impact on the Portuguese economy.
