Silva, Carina da Conceição Sousa da; Terra, Ana LúciaEste trabalho apresenta o produto final do estágio desenvolvido no âmbito do Mestrado em Informação Empresarial, que teve como objetivo principal o estudo e tratamento arquivístico do Sistema de Informação dos Serviços Hidráulicos do Cávado e Ave, por forma a servir a comunidade de investigadores. O método quadripolar orientou o tratamento arquivístico da informação produzida e acumulada por este Sistema de Informação, o que exigiu a elaboração de um estudo de natureza orgânica e funcional, que serviu de base à reconstituição da história dos serviços hidráulicos facultando a contextualização e compreensão da sua produção documental.
- School libraries and indexing policies in Brazil and PortugalPublication . Terra, Ana Lúcia; Fujita, Mariângela Spotti Lopes; Agustín-Lacruz, María del CarmenResearch data on indexing policies in Brazilian and Portuguese school libraries are presented and discussed. Legal and organizational contexts regarding these types of libraries are briefly described. The collection of empirical data was obtained by means of an inquiry that resulted in 150 questionnaires from Brazil and 406 from Portugal. Based on these samples, a generic identification of school libraries was carried out in terms of teaching levels and institutional/geographical integration. The existence of a catalog in the libraries was also determined. The use of the two main kinds of indexing languages (classification systems and verbal indexing languages) were identified as well as the existence of manuals designed to guide indexing procedures. References are made to aspects related to the specificity and the number of terms/subjects selected for each document and the use of indexing norms by comparing both Brazilian and Portuguese realities.

It is important to understand the information literacy and behaviors of LIS students to see if they are employing the skills they will need to assist and educate their future patrons, yet there is relatively little research into the information literacy and behaviors of librarians and library students. Using a survey on information behaviors, this study addresses this gap in the literature by examining how LIS students in 18 countries search for, evaluate, and use information in various contexts, and on whom they rely for help. The results of this study demonstrate library science students’ information literacy skills within an international context. Faculty in LIS programs will be interested to see how their students approach information problems, and might use this understanding to develop or strengthen courses and inform curricular decisions.
- Políticas, mediação e acesso à informação europeia: análise comparativa no âmbito da ciência da informaçãoPublication . Terra, Ana LúciaApresentam-se as primeiras etapas da política de informação das instituições europeia desde os anos cinquenta do século XX até ao primeiro semestre de 2007. Enfatiza-se o alargamento progressivo do público-alvo, inicialmente restrito a grupos de elite diversos, que, a partir dos anos setenta, começa a procurar abranger a opinião-pública de todos os Estados-Membros. Sublinha-se também a afirmação gradual de um discurso assente na política de comunicação em detrimento da política de informação. Os Centros de Documentação Europeia, rede de informação tutelada pela Comissão Europeia, são objecto de um estudo mais detalhado. Analisam-se as motivações para o acesso à informação europeia, as facilidades e os obstáculos existentes para esse acesso, os meios e as fontes preferenciais bem como os aspectos mais valorizados neste âmbito.
- A metodologia quadripolar de investigação científica aplicada em Ciência da Informação: relato de experiênciaPublication . Terra, Ana LúciaO texto retrata o percurso metodológico de uma investigação no âmbito científico da Ciência da Informação, com a aplicação do método quadripolar. Explica-se como este dispositivo de investigação proporcionou o conhecimento multidimensional do objeto de estudo. São abordadas em detalhe as componentes envolvidas nos quatro pólos desta metodologia: o epistemológico, o teórico, o técnico e o morfológico. Evidenciam-se as relações dinâmicas entre os quatro pólos, com o pólo epistemológico a enquadrar os referenciais teóricos, que influenciam o contacto com a realidade operado no pólo técnico, o qual determina os resultados do pólo morfológico.
- Uma análise de comportamento informacional: a utilização dos recursos da biblioteca escolarPublication . Terra, Ana Lúcia; Sá, SalvinaNeste artigo, apresentamos um estudo de caso centrado na análise do comportamento informacional de uma amostra dos alunos frequentadores da rede municipal de bibliotecas escolares do concelho de Vila de Conde. Procurámos conhecer as competências dos discentes para utilizarem as colecções e os recursos tecnológicos disponíveis no espaço da biblioteca escolar, em particular as formas de pesquisa de informação ou de localização e de uso dos documentos em livre acesso. Neste contexto, enfatiza-se o papel central da Ciência da Informação e dos seus profissionais na biblioteca escolar, em especial na transmissão de competências de literacia da informação.
- Linguagens documentais para as bibliotecas escolares: o caso da Espanha, Portugal e BrasilPublication . Agustín-Lacruz, María del Carmen; Fujita, Mariângela Spotti Lopes; Terra, Ana LúciaEste artigo analisa as características específicas e os processos de indexação e classificação realizados em bibliotecas escolares para tratar e recuperar as informações de suas coleções. Também se analisam as linguagens como ferramentas documentais específicas utilizadas em bibliotecas escolares portuguesas espanholas, portuguesas e brasileiras. Para atingir este objetivo, o modelo de biblioteca escolar é estudado de forma crítica, se analisa o conceito de biblioteca escolar de forma crítica, se estudam suas funções e se examinam as técnicas e os instrumentos que permitem organizar a informação. Entre outras ferramentas, estudam-se listas de cabeçalhos de assuntos como os Cabeçalhos de assuntos para livros infantis e juvenis e a Lista de Cabeçalhos de assuntos para as bibliotecas; sistemas de classificação, como a Classificação Decimal Universal (edição de bolso) ou a classificação por centros de interesse e tesauros especializados como o Tesauro da Educação UNESCO-OIE e o Tesauro Europeu da Educação, entre outros.
- European information users: topics from a comparative analysis within the European UnionPublication . Terra, Ana LúciaPurpose – The aim of this article is to present some results from research undertaken into the information behaviour of European Documentation Centre (EDC) users. It will reflect on the practices of a group of 234 users of 55 EDCs covering 21 Member States of the European Union (EU), used to access European information. Design/methodology/approach – In order to collect the data presented here, five questionnaires were sent to users in all the EDCs in Finland, Ireland, Hungary and Portugal. In the remaining EU countries, five questionnaires were sent to two EDCs chosen at random. The questionnaires were sent by post, following telephone contact with the EDC managers. Findings – Factors determining access to information on the European Union and the frequency of this access are identified. The information providers most commonly used to access European information and the information sources considered the most reliable by respondents will also be analysed. Another area of analysis concerns the factors cited by respondents as facilitating access to information on Europe or, conversely, making it more difficult to access. Parallel to this, the aspects of accessing information on EU that are valued most by users will also be assessed. Research limitations/implications – Questionnaires had to be used, as the intention was to cover a very extensive geographical area. However, in opting for closed questions, it is acknowledged that standard responses have been obtained with no scope for capturing the individual circumstances of each respondent, thus making a qualitative approach difficult. Practical implications – The results provide an overall picture of certain aspects of the information behaviour of EDC users. They may serve as a starting point for planning training sessions designed to develop the skills required to search, access, evaluate and apply European information within an academic context. From a broader perspective, they also constitute factors which the European Commission should take into consideration when formulating its information and communication policy. Originality/value – This is the first piece of academic research into the EDCs and their users, which aimed to cover all Members State of the EU.
- Need for, demand for, and use of European Union informationPublication . Martín González, Yolanda; Terra, Ana LúciaThe discussion and analysis of the diverse outreach activities in this article provide guidance and suggestions for academic librarians who are interested in outreach and community engagement of any scale and nature. Cases are draw from a wide spectrum and are particularly strong in the setting of large academic libraries, special collections and programming for multicultural populations. The aim of this study is to present the results of research carried out regarding the needs, demand and consumption of European Union information by users in European Documentation Centres (EDC). A quantitative methodology was chosen based on a questionnaire with 24 items. This questionnaire was distributed within the EDC of Salamanca, Spain, and the EDC of Porto, Portugal, during specific time intervals between 2010 and 2011. We examined the level of EU information that EDC users possess, and identified the factors that facilitate or hinder access to EU information, the topics most demanded, and the types of documents consulted. Analysis was made of the use that the consumer of European information makes of databases and their behaviour during the consultation. Although the sample used was not very significant owing to its small size, it is a faithful reflection of the scarce visits made to EDCs. This study can be of use to managers of EDCs, providing them with better knowledge of the information needs and demands of their users. Ultimately this should lead to improvements in the services offered. The study lies within a frame of research scarcely addressed in specialized scholarly literature: European Union information.
