- Preservice teachers' knowledge on elementary geometry conceptsPublication . Couto, Angela; Vale, IsabelThis text is based on a research, which is still in progress, whose main objective is to identify and understand what are the main difficulties of future mathematics teachers of basic education are, regarding their content knowledge in geometry in the context of the curricular unit of Geometry during their undergraduate degree. We chose a qualitative approach in the form of case study, in which data collection was done through observation, interviews, a diverse set of tasks, a diagnostic test and other documents. This paper focuses on the test given to prospective teachers at the beginning of the course. The preliminary analysis of the data points to a weak performance of preservice teachers in the test issues addressing elementary knowledge of Geometry
- Constructing and Using Multimodal Narratives to Research in Science Education: Contributions Based on Practical ClassroomPublication . Lopes, Joaquim; Silva, António; Cravino, José; Santos, Carla; Cunha, Ana; Pinto, José; Silva, Adília; Viegas, Clara; Saraiva, Maria; Branco, MariaThis study deals with the problem of how to collect genuine and useful data about science classroom practices, and preserving the complex and holistic nature of teaching and learning. Additionally, we were looking for an instrument that would allow comparability and verifiability for teaching and research purposes. Given the multimodality of teaching and learning processes, we developed the multimodal narrative (MN), which describes what happens during a task and incorporates data such as examples of students’ work.

- Balearic shearwater and northern gannet bycatch risk assessment in Portuguese Continental WatersPublication . Araújo, Hélder; Correia Rodrigues, Pedro; Debru, Philippe; Ferreira, Marisa; Vingada, José; Eira, CatarinaEven though incidental captures in fisheries are one of the major threats to seabirds, bycatch has been difficult to quantify and specific risk areas are rarely identified. The present study evaluates the potential fisheries bycatch effect on two of the most emblematic seabird species wintering off continental Portugal, the critically endangered Balearic Shearwater and Northern Gannet. Information was collected by on-board observers and voluntary logbooks kept by fishing boat captains. Each species' Potential Biological Removal (for the study area) was based on the respective population abundance estimated through aerial surveys. The analysis of bycatch mortality identified the Fixed Gear in the Polyvalent fleet and Purse Seiners as the fisheries with the highest Balearic Shearwater bycatch rate. Longline and Fixed Gear fisheries had the highest Northern Gannet bycatch rate. The Potential Biological Removal thresholds were 41 Balearic Shearwaters per year (CI ¼ 20–83) and 2345 Northern Gannets per year (CI ¼ 2049–2680). The overlap between the predictive species distribution maps and fisheries density maps allowed for a seabird Bycatch Risk Assessment. The higher Balearic Shearwater bycatch risk was obtained for Fixed Gear and Purse Seines and the highest Northern Gannet bycatch risk was obtained for Longline and Fixed Gear fisheries. Bycatch mitigation measures should be applied in fisheries presenting the higher bycatch risks. This study identifies the potential areas where Balearic Shearwater and Northern Gannet bycatch is more likely to occur, including some of the already designated Special Protection Areas where management and conservation measures should urgently be applied.
- Monitoring Abundance and Distribution of Northern Gannets Morus bassanus in Western Iberian Waters in Autumn by Aerial SurveysPublication . Araújo, Hélder; Rodrigues, Pedro; Bastos-Santos, Jorge; Ferreira, Marisa; Pereira, Andreia; Martínez-Cedeira, José; Vingada, José; Eira, CatarinaSeveral North Atlantic breeding seabirds, such as the Northern Gannet Morus bassanus, use Western Iberian Waters for wintering and migration. In this study, we aimed at producing absolute population estimates of post-breeding Gannets and evaluating the importance of the study area within the species’ migration range. We performed six aerial surveys in September and/or October each year between 2010 and 2015, covering 74,840km2 in total. Using line transect methodology, 3,672 Gannet sightings were recorded along 10,496.3 nautical miles (nm). Immature individuals and adults comprised approximately 87% of all sightings. Using Distance sampling, overall abundance was estimated at 89,930 birds, ranging from 58,010 individuals in 2014 to 128,140 in 2015. the highest densities per sector areas were recorded in the North and Centre sectors whereas the lowest densities were registered in the Galicia sector, the Spanish region within the study area. Gannets were mostly present in shallow shelf waters of the continental shelf, particularly between 3 and 20 nautical miles offshore. Habitat suitability models for Gannets in the study area were tested using several eco-geographical variables and chlorophyll concentrations were found to contribute most to explaining annual Gannet occurrence probabilities. A global interannual spatial analysis demonstrated the core areas for conservation of the Northern Gannet in Western Iberian Waters. Moreover, our results demonstrate that Western Iberian waters are used by almost 10% of the global Northern Gannet population, corroborating the existence of seabird hotspots during the non-breeding period, along migration corridors and at their wintering grounds.
