- Accounting education in an action-based learning environment: lessons learnedPublication . Silva, Paulino; Freitas Santos, José; Vieira, IsabelIn the context of the Bologna Declaration a change is taking place in the teaching/learning paradigm. From teaching-centered education, which emphasizes the acquisition and transmission of knowledge, we now speak of learning-centered education, which is more demanding for students. This paradigm promotes a continuum of lifelong learning, where the individual needs to be able to handle knowledge, to select what is appropriate for a particular context, to learn permanently and to understand how to learn in new and rapidly changing situations. One attempt to face these challenges has been the experience of ISCAP regarding the teaching/learning of accounting in the course Managerial Simulation. This paper describes the process of teaching, learning and assessment in an action-based learning environment. After a brief general framework that focuses on education objectives, we report the strengths and limitations of this teaching/learning tool. We conclude with some lessons from the implementation of the project.
- An experiment with online practice for assessmentPublication . Vieira, Isabel; Paula Lopes, Ana; Lopes, Cristina; Azevedo, Jose Manuel; Torres, Cristina; Babo, LurdesWhen teaching is a passion we do whatever we can to pass it over to our students, and it is even more relevant when we teach a subject to students from a different area. As professors in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) we have the responsibility to prepare the students for the future. We have to gain their attention so that they become engaged in the subject taught and have success at the end. The aim of this paper is to describe and analyse an experiment that took place in the Spring term of 2019, with first year students of a Mathematics course from the undergraduate degree in Marketing. We have developed several questions, related to the course syllabus, on an online platform, and created a Question Pool. Outside the classroom, students at their own pace could solve these exercises. All questions have the solution step by step, thus the students can realize what is expected gaining insights in the subject. We discuss how the students accepted the initiative and how they used it. The results will be presented, analysed and used to improve the methodology.
- Behind video lectures in a MOOCPublication . Soares, Filomena Baptista; Lopes, Ana Paula; Vieira, IsabelThe year 2012 was the “boom year” in MOOC and all its outstanding growth until now, made us move forward in designing the first MOOC in our Institution (and the third in our country, Portugal). Most MOOC are video lectured based and the learning analytic process to these ones is just taking its first steps. Designing a video-lecture seems, at a first glance, very easy: one can just record a live lesson or lecture and turn it, directly, into a video-lecture (even here one may experience some “sound” and “camera” problems); but developing some engaging, appealing video-lecture, that motivates students to embrace knowledge and that really contributes to the teaching/learning process, it is not an easy task. Therefore questions like: “What kind of information can induce knowledge construction, in a video-lecture?”, “How can a professor interact in a video-lecture when he is not really there?”, “What are the video-lectures attributes that contribute the most to viewer’s engagement?”, “What seems to be the maximum “time-resistance” of a viewer?”, and many others, raised in our minds when designing video-lectures to a Mathematics MOOC from the scratch. We believe this technological resource can be a powerful tool to enhance students' learning process. Students that were born in digital/image era, respond and react slightly different to outside stimulus, than their teachers/professors ever did or do. In this article we will describe just how we have tried to overcome some of the difficulties and challenges we tackled when producing our own video-math-lectures and in what way, we feel, videos can contribute to the teaching and learning process at higher education level.
- Beneficiaries of Social Disability Pension in Small Municipalities in the Northern Region of Portugal: Application of Cluster Analysis in the Identification of Potential CausesPublication . Torres, Cristina; Vieira, Isabel; Lopes, Isabel Cristina; Monteiro, Rui; Ferreira, Carla; Bem-Haja, InêsThis study is focused on the northern region of Portugal and addresses the number of road accidents with casualties and the number of beneficiaries of the social disability pension. Municipalities with low population density are mostly located in the hinterland. The phenomenon of population aging entails the problem of people who are unable to work and become beneficiaries of the social disability pension. The hierarchical clustering method applied in this paper characterizes 46 municipalities in northern Portugal with a population of less than 20,000 inhabitants – designated small – according to economic activity, rate of road accidents with casualties and disability pensioners. These municipalities were divided into two homogeneous groups or clusters. It was possible to identify that Cluster 1 comprises the innermost municipalities featuring few road accidents with casualties, not many disability pensioners, and a small number of companies compared to Cluster 2. This study can contribute to helping local governments’ decision-making process to improve the economic activity, reduce the region’s human desertification, and improve municipal road conditions.
- Birth rate in PortugalPublication . Guerra, Maria; Pessoa, Ana; Rodrigues, Ana; Mesquita, Maria; Babo, Lurdes; Vieira, Isabel; Lopes, Isabel Cristina; Torres, CristinaThis paper presents a study on the birth rate in Portugal. The quantitative data analysis of 308 municipalities concludes that the variables “live births of mothers residing in Portugal with Portuguese and foreign nationality”, “fertility rate of the various age groups”, “live births of mothers residing in Portugal according to their level of education” and “births by gender” are strongly correlated, presenting common factors that significantly influence the birth rate.
- Challenges in the creation and development of a mathematics MOOCPublication . Lopes, Ana Paula; Soares, Filomena Baptista; Vieira, IsabelThe fast development of distance learning tools such as Open Educational Resources (OER) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC or MOOCs) are indicators of a shift in the way in which digital teaching and learning are understood. MOOC are a new style of online classes that allow any person with web access, anywhere, usually free of charge, to participate through video lectures, computer graded tests and discussion forums. They have been capturing the attention of many higher education institutions around the world. This paper will give us an overview of the “Introduction to Differential Calculus” a MOOC Project, created by an engaged volunteer team of Mathematics lecturers from four schools of the Polytechnic Institute of Oporto (IPP). The MOOC theories and their popularity are presented and complemented by a discussion of some MOOC definitions and their inherent advantages and disadvantages. It will also explore what MOOC mean for Mathematics education. The Project development is revealed by focusing on used MOOC structure, as well as the quite a lot of types of course materials produced. It ends with a presentation of a short discussion about problems and challenges met throughout the development of the project. It is also our goal to contribute for a change in the way teaching and learning Mathematics is seen and practiced nowadays, trying to make education more accessible to as many people as possible and increase our institution (IPP) recognition.
- Depopulation of Portugal’s interiorPublication . Suavinha, Bárbara; Alves, Maria; Magalhães, Marta; Babo, Lurdes; Torres, Cristina; Vieira, Isabel; Lopes, Isabel CristinaThe depopulation of Portugal’s interior presents a crucial socio-demographic challenge, manifesting in widening disparities between major cities and inland regions. This study examines factors influencing depopulation in Portuguese municipalities, using data from PORDATA (2022). Through Linear Discriminant Analysis on twenty quantitative variables spanning education, demographics, health, and employment, municipalities are categorised by population density. The analysis reveals significant differences between groups across all variables, reinforcing the differentiation by population density. The model achieves a 71.2% correct classification rate, highlighting education and health variables as pivotal contributors to group discrimination.
- Designing video lectures for MOOCPublication . Soares, Filomena Baptista; Lopes, Ana Paula; Vieira, IsabelEducational videos differ from other teaching and learning technologies as they allow the benefit of using visual perception. Video lectures are not new to education, however with the use of innovative video technologies they can improve academic outcomes and extend the reach of education. They may offer extraordinary new experiences for higher education institutions (HEI). Through them lecturers can provide information and contents to students, and if used creatively, video lectures can become a powerful technological tool in education, inside and outside classrooms. Inside a classroom it can motivate students and improve topics’ debate and outside it is a good support for students’ self- learning. In some cases they can be used to work some subjects standing behind, but needed to support actual courses contents, that students do not remember (or were not even taught), opening an “in front to the past door” that backs students self-study. The student-educator dynamic is changing. Students are expecting exceptional instruction and educators are expecting students to be more and more well informed about subjects from online viewing. This article explores some of the potential benefits and challenges associated with the use of video lectures in the teaching and learning process at higher education. We will also discuss some thoughts and examples for the use of teaching materials to enhance student’s learning and try to understand how video can act as powerful and innovative to enlighten teaching and learning (note that unfortunately, sometimes, the opposite is happening).
