- An experiment with online practice for assessmentPublication . Vieira, Isabel; Paula Lopes, Ana; Lopes, Cristina; Azevedo, Jose Manuel; Torres, Cristina; Babo, LurdesWhen teaching is a passion we do whatever we can to pass it over to our students, and it is even more relevant when we teach a subject to students from a different area. As professors in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) we have the responsibility to prepare the students for the future. We have to gain their attention so that they become engaged in the subject taught and have success at the end. The aim of this paper is to describe and analyse an experiment that took place in the Spring term of 2019, with first year students of a Mathematics course from the undergraduate degree in Marketing. We have developed several questions, related to the course syllabus, on an online platform, and created a Question Pool. Outside the classroom, students at their own pace could solve these exercises. All questions have the solution step by step, thus the students can realize what is expected gaining insights in the subject. We discuss how the students accepted the initiative and how they used it. The results will be presented, analysed and used to improve the methodology.
- Analyzing the Implementation of Lean Methodologies and Practices in the Portuguese Industry: A SurveyPublication . Pinto, Carla; Mendonça, Jorge; Babo, Lurdes; Silva, Francisco J. G.; Fernandes, José L. R.The mass production paradigm on which much of the industry was based has changed. The market is increasingly demanding, requesting diversity and products that are more and more adapted to personal wishes and requirements. This implies producing a greater diversity of products in smaller quantities. Competitiveness is enormous, which forces most companies to be truly effective and efficient, taking care of product quality, delivery time, and final cost. Lean methodologies have been a valuable aid in this field. The diversity of Lean tools has been shown to have answers to the most diverse challenges, and companies are aware of this, increasingly adopting methodologies and processes that aim to progressively reduce waste and adapting their production paradigm to what the market requires. This work intends to provide a vision, as global as possible, of the pathway of Lean implementation in the Portuguese industry. For this purpose, a survey was carried out with a significant sample of Portuguese industrial companies from a wide range of activity sectors. The data collected through the survey were treated statistically, and then a SWOT analysis of the results was performed, which provided a collection of precious information on the evolution of industrial companies in Portugal

- Birth rate in PortugalPublication . Guerra, Maria; Pessoa, Ana; Rodrigues, Ana; Mesquita, Maria; Babo, Lurdes; Vieira, Isabel; Lopes, Isabel Cristina; Torres, CristinaThis paper presents a study on the birth rate in Portugal. The quantitative data analysis of 308 municipalities concludes that the variables “live births of mothers residing in Portugal with Portuguese and foreign nationality”, “fertility rate of the various age groups”, “live births of mothers residing in Portugal according to their level of education” and “births by gender” are strongly correlated, presenting common factors that significantly influence the birth rate.
- Depopulation of Portugal’s interiorPublication . Suavinha, Bárbara; Alves, Maria; Magalhães, Marta; Babo, Lurdes; Torres, Cristina; Vieira, Isabel; Lopes, Isabel CristinaThe depopulation of Portugal’s interior presents a crucial socio-demographic challenge, manifesting in widening disparities between major cities and inland regions. This study examines factors influencing depopulation in Portuguese municipalities, using data from PORDATA (2022). Through Linear Discriminant Analysis on twenty quantitative variables spanning education, demographics, health, and employment, municipalities are categorised by population density. The analysis reveals significant differences between groups across all variables, reinforcing the differentiation by population density. The model achieves a 71.2% correct classification rate, highlighting education and health variables as pivotal contributors to group discrimination.
- Engaging students to learn forecasting methodsPublication . Torres, Cristina; Babo, Lurdes; Mendonça, JorgePresently, higher education institutions are faced with the challenge of developing student’s abilities and skills needed in their future workplace. In what concerns technological skills, the use of spreadsheets for calculations, analysis of data and forecasting is a common and important practice in companies. Particularly, the MS Excel software is widely used by professionals from all fields. In this sense, Economic, Business and Marketing graduates need competencies in forecasting methods, extremely useful for decision-making processes. It thus becomes imperative to implement pedagogical practices to encourage students to use these technological tools. The later will promote the development of competencies in forecasting methods to solve future real problems. In this paper, we attempt to address these issues by analysing the MS Excel software capabilities as a teaching tool in a forecasting methods course. It was proposed to the students to carry out a learning project involving statistical concepts, namely linear regression, performed in MS Excel. We examine the performance and engagement of two samples of students with different backgrounds and from distinct realities. One group is composed of ERASMUS’ students from several nationalities and fields of study and other group consists of Portuguese students of the Marketing Bachelor degree, both enrolled in an optional course of the bachelor degree in Marketing taught at Porto Accounting and Business School from Polytechnic of Porto. The effectiveness of this approach is shown through the analysis of results of students’ projects. We verify that students in both groups achieved the task proposed goals and applied appropriately the required concepts in an engaged way.

No ano 2003, o Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração do Porto (ISCAP), integrado no Instituto Politécnico do Porto (IPP), introduziu a plataforma Moodle.
