- ALE - advanced learning environments: work-based learningPublication .
- Communication skills in higher education vs the labor market: different perceptions and valuationsPublication . Braga, Inês; Abreu, AntónioCommunication skills are considered increasingly important by higher education institutions, but also by employers as they influence better professional perfor-mance. The literature review recommends a necessary and desirable alignment of the communicational aspect of academic curricula with work needs, so that graduates have professional success. The objective of this research is to know how communicational skills are seen and valued in higher education, specifically in a Portuguese Polytechnic Accounting and Business School. For this purpose, undergraduate and Masters students who integrate courses or approaches related to communicational skills are surveyed. Coordinators of some of these courses (who are also professors) are consulted too. The methodology adopted is the case study and the data collection techniques are questionnaires applied to a sample of students and interviews carried out with the Coordinators of some of afore-mentioned courses. According to a self-assessment carried out by students, it was concluded that their average communication performance is very good, which is not in line with the literature review. As for the existence of training, within the scope of communication skills, course coordinators and most students consider that these should be taught in higher education. In the opinion of the course di-rectors, there is an alignment between the skills taught in the courses and those that are required in the job market, an opinion that a not very expressive majority of students also share, although an overwhelming majority of students consider that this should be done. Course coordinators and students suggest motivating, practical and work-related pedagogical approaches for greater development of the skills in analysis.
- eHealth infrastructures and security in portuguese hospitals: benchmarking with european hospitalsPublication . Vidal de Carvalho, Joao; Rocha, Álvaro; Abreu, AntónioThe aim of this study is to describe and compare eHealth Infrastructures and Security in selected European Union (EU) countries. Using data available from the European Hospital Survey (2012/2013), the study reported in this paper analyses the adoption of five eHealth Infrastructures and Security indicators in Portuguese Hospitals, namely: Externally connected; Broadband; Single and unified wireless; Clear and structured rules on access to clinical data; and EAS (Enterprise Archiving Strategy) for disaster recovery in less than 24 hours. The analysis of these eHealth indicators allows us to understand the position of Portugal in relation to the European average. It has been found that the Portuguese Hospitals are well positioned with regard to the adoption of these indicators and in spite of this, remains a permanent concern to raise the eHealth Infrastructures and Security levels through new projects in progress.

- Necessidades e expectativas perante a plataforma Moodle e apoio institucional disponibilizado. O caso do ISCAPPublication .

- Virtual learning environments: formal environments vs informal environmentsPublication . Gonçalves, Maria José Angélico; Camarinha, Ana P.; Abreu, António; Braga, InêsSociety is constantly evolving and has so many repercussions on a social level as well as within personal and professional life. Information Technology (IT) has an increasing impact, bringing new challenges and paradigms to Education, by combining formal and informal environments in the communication that takes place between teachers and students, as well as between themselves. Nowadays, in education, the use of a an informal communication environment is increasingly verified in parallel with the formal environments already implemented. Teachers present challenges in the Learning Management System (LMS), but give students the freedom to use tools in less formal environments, as long as they meet with the stated objectives. The synergy between these two tools promotes learning environments with a social and interactive presence, one that is able to promote student success in virtual environments. This article presents an exploratory study of the use of platforms to support traditional teaching, such as social networks and LMS, using methods and pedagogical approaches that value the experimentation, discovery, research and integration of knowledge and skills. The purpose of this article is to identify the functionalities of each of the tools that promote the improvement of these environments in both formal and informal learning situations. The methodology used to reach the objective, besides the review of the literature, is based on an exploratory study, using research and interviews.
