- 21st Century skills: some pedagogical approaches and reflections in a polytechnical superior schoolPublication . Braga, InêsThis analysis of the post Bologna Declaration Portuguese Higher Education System (from 2006) will highlight that despite the mandatory adjustments such has reducing the length of study cycles this system has not yet succeeded in and creating curricula that visibly reflect the development of the skill for academic and professional survival in the 21st century. Exceptions can be found and it is likely that transversal work exists within the courses. It is, however, strongly dependent on the training and awareness of its faculty, whereas the ideal setting would be that the training of such skills was in curricula. Upon conducting the literature review, the theoretical basis for this paper is anchored on Standards and on Information Science organizations’ studies on Information Literacy such as those of the American Library Association (ALA) – e.g. Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (ALA, 2000), Standards for the 21st Century Learner (ALA, 2007), Learning 4 Life: The National Plan for Implementation of Standards for the 21st Century Learner (2008). Within the context of the information society, of the constantly emerging information and communication technologies, and of the participatory culture we find the research of Henry Jenkins and co-authors - New Media Literacy White Paper. Confronting the challenges of participatory culture: media education for the 21st century (2006) and the more recent Skills for Today Research Series (P21, 2017) noteworthy. The data presented is the result of a research carried out within Porto Polytechnic in a scope comprising courses from diverse scientific areas. The data illustrates the contrast between a) the perception of teachers and students indicating that Information Literacy (IL) skills are fairly well developed within the training process and b) the results of IL tests applied to students being mostly negative. This paper reports some teaching and learning experienced by an Information Science and Communication teacher hoping it may help improving the adoption of pedagogical strategies that can motivate and potentiate a more effective development of IL skills. We believe that, in addition to an institutional involvement by management, faculty, librarians and, first and foremost, students, in this complex collaborative task of formation, these reflexions will contribute to make these individuals in the process of training more autonomous, critical, responsible, active and successful as students, workers and citizens.
- Academic libraries in the digital transformation: the case of the library of the Faculty of Economics of the University of PortoPublication . Ferreira, Mariana; Preto, Paulina; Braga, InêsIn a world in which the digital transformation is asserting itself with increasing impact, higher education (HE) and academic libraries (AL) do not escape this reality and have been playing an important role in supporting teaching and learning, contributing, through different means, for the training of students. This work aims to show how a university library - that of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP) - meets the needs of students, namely in terms of information literacy (IL) and digital literacy (DL), using for this the new technologies which enable the referred digital transformation and new ways of teaching and learning. Due to the current importance of the librarian's role as a trainer, the authors - the trainee of the degree in Documentation and Information Sciences and Technologies (LCTDI) of the Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto (ISCAP), the FEP librarian and the internship advisor - designed a set of training sessions for IL within the scope of the curricular internship of said course in the academic year 2019-20. This project had as main objectives: (1) to provide distance learning; (2) to reduce the on-site training provided by the library; (3) to allow any member of the FEP community to have access to information that is relevant to them, whenever and wherever they want; (4) to offer training to the entire educational community, including Erasmus students, with the production of materials in Portuguese and English. The methodology adopted consisted of a review of the literature on the subject and a practical part carried out in the library involving the production of videos based on the observation of training sessions. From a theoretical point of view, the themes of IL and DL in AL are addressed, the role of the librarian in the development of such skills in students, the exploration of new digital tools used for training, more specifically, the production of tutorial videos, as well as distance learning. In the practical component of this project, eight video tutorials were produced on the search and location of information using the online catalog, the subject of one of the training activities given by the FEP library, and which addresses the most basic resources of the library, which is an essential resource for students. In conclusion, the creation of support materials that will soon be made available on the institution's website will surely contribute to the development of LI skills of a greater number of students. In addition, the new format of these contents will serve as a complement and / or substitute for face-to-face training sessions, responding to a problem detected by the institution itself - that the training for LI is not sufficient nor the most diversified among the academic community. Finally, the sharing and availability of information designed with a specific target audience in mind and disseminated through the right communication channels, is crucial for a profitable use, leading to the consequent satisfaction of users.
- Active learning in higher education: students and multiple skills in the spotlightPublication . Braga, InêsThe active learning which presupposes an active and deep student learning rather than a passive and shallow student stance aligns with the Bologna process assumptions that place higher education students at the center of learning in order to develop skills of different natures. In opposition to the traditional teaching model, the protagonists of this new and necessary learning process are no longer the teachers who debit material that students memorize to reproduce mechanically and without critical judgment at the moment of assessment. Nowadays, students are in the spotlight, they should be the focus of all attention, always bearing in mind that they learn better the more opportunities they are given to be the protagonists of building their knowledge, according to their interests and needs. We intend to review the literature on some motivating and enhancing pedagogical strategies for the development of skills for the 21st century, as they are proven to be useful for the success of individuals not only in the academic context but also in the professional environment. We will highlight role-play, as it’s a strategy that we consider to be less pedagogically explored but very suitable for teaching in which we want students to learn better, with more pleasure, recognizing usefulness in their learning and obtaining better results. We will complete the investigation with the report of a pedagogical experience implemented with Portuguese polytechnic higher education students that fit the theme under study and which we consider beneficial.
- ALE - advanced learning environments: work-based learningPublication .
- An approach for automated service selection and ranking using services choreographyPublication . Silva, Firmino; Chituc, Claudia-Melania; Grefen, PaulIn today’s highly competitive market, it is critical to provide customers services with a high level of configuration to answer their business needs. Knowing in advance the performance associated with a specific choreography of services (e.g., by taking into account the expected results of each component service) represents an important asset that allows businesses to provide a global service tailored to customers’ specific requests. This research work aims at advancing the state-of-the-art in this area by proposing an approach for service selection and ranking using services choreography, predicting the behavior of the services considering customers’ requirements and preferences, business process constraints and characteristics of the execution environment.
- An architecture for an effective usage of data mining in business intelligence systemsPublication . Azevedo, Ana; Santos, Manuel FilipeBusiness Intelligence (BI) is one emergent area of the Decision Support Systems (DSS) discipline. Over the last years, the evolution in this area has been considerable. Similarly, in the last years, there has been a huge growth and consolidation of the Data Mining (DM) field. DM is being used with success in BI systems, but a truly DM integration with BI is lacking. Therefore, a lack of an effective usage of DM in BI can be found in some BI systems. An architecture that pretends to conduct to an effective usage of DM in BI is presented.
- An aspect-oriented framework for orthogonal persistencePublication . Pereira, Rui Humberto; Perez-Schofield, J. Baltasar GarcíaThe life cycle of software applications in general is very short and with extreme volatile requirements. Within these conditions programmers need development tools and techniques with an extreme level of productivity. We consider the code reuse as the most prominent approach to solve that problem. Our proposal uses the advantages provided by the Aspect-Oriented Programming in order to build a reusable framework capable to turn both programmer and application oblivious as far as data persistence is concerned, thus avoiding the need to write any line of code about that concern. Besides the benefits to productivity, the software quality increases. This paper describes the actual state of the art, identifying the main challenge to build a complete and reusable framework for Orthogonal Persistence in concurrent environments with support for transactions. The present work also includes a successfully developed prototype of that framework, capable of freeing the programmer of implementing any read or write data operations. This prototype is supported by an object oriented database and, in the future, will also use a relational database and have support for transactions.
- Analysing and improving mathematical formulation of webavalia: a self and peer assessment toolPublication . Babo, Rosalina; Fitas, Ricardo; Suhonen, Jarkko; Tukiainen, MarkkuRecently, Problem-based learning has been increasingly used, and with those practices, self and peer evaluation tasks have gained more importance. This method of learning assists learners in the acquisition of skills and competencies. In order to support self and peer evaluation tasks, there are some different software offers in the market. The ease use of them is demanded since these tasks are an important part of evaluation. With the literature emphasis on the importance of assessment and critical spirit, it arises the possibility to implement formulas to increase the efficiency on the methodology applied and satisfaction of students and teachers. This paper introduces formulation problems about marks weighting in self and peer evaluation. It presents the advantages and disadvantages of different solutions for the formulation and suggestions of adapting them among tools, feedback surveys, and teacher’s methods of evaluation. It is also expected that the formulation, which was implemented in the software tool WEBAVALIA, has a great impact on feedback, improving user experience, and both efficiency and flexibility.
