Abstract(s)
The aim of this artistic project was to develop a deeper understanding and performance practice of traditional and contemporary percussion techniques. Among the various traditional techniques of percussion I chose to develop the African percussion (from Guinea and Burkina Faso, and later from Nigeria) and the Cuban percussion. In this way, I created an artistic project of fusion entitled Das Raizes, in which a two-year master's course tour on African and Cuban music is presented, using both traditional and contemporary techniques and original compositions (my own and from other composers). For each work I first explored the traditional techniques and then adapted them to contemporary percussion in a process where their African, Cuban or even African-Cuban roots are clear. Moreover, in this project, using the hands to play percussion with assumes a leading role. In the XXI century the use of drumstick predominates as the strongest technique to master the instruments in conservatories and in schools of music. After acquiring this technique I decided to deepen the traditional techniques which highlight the use of the hand, a very old technique in its existence, but new to me. I hope to transport the listener to a world where colour, movement and sound, tradition and contemporaneity are in constant vibration.
