- Paul Auster and the music of change: building new storiesPublication . Santos, ClaraIn the work of Paul Auster (Newark, 1947 - ), we find two main themes: the sense of loss and existential drift and the loneliness of the individual fully committed to the work of writing, as if he had been confined to the book that commands his life. However, this second theme is clearly the dominant one because the character's space of solitude may include its own wandering, because this wandering is also often performed inside the four walls of a room, just like it is narrated inside the space of the page and the book. Both in his poetry, essays and fiction, Auster seems to face the work of writing as an actual physical effort of effective construction, as if the words that are aligned in the poem-text were stones to place in a row when building a wall or some other structure in stone.

Santos, ClaraNuma primeira abordagem a A Lady’s Visit to Manilla and Japan (1863), de Anna D’Almeida, os leitores não deverão esperar encontrar a narrativa de uma experiência que poderia ter sido produzida por um desses “Etonnants voyageurs! Quelles nobles histoires / Nous lisons dans vos yeux profonds comme les mers!”, citando o último poema de Les Fleurs du Mal de Baudelaire. Nem deverão esperar ser confrontados com o relato superficial de uma turista indolente sobre a diversão convencional ou o previsível choque moral experimentados durante as várias etapas do seu grand tour pessoal, tão em voga, e que são característicos deste tipo de literatura, particularmente popular no campo emergente do turismo do final do século xix. Neste artigo, proponho-me analisar a escrita feminina occidental no contexto dos encontros culturais, mais precisamente, as imagens que uma viajante ocidental do século xix cria a partir da sua breve exposição a vários espaços e práticas da Ásia. A família D’Almeida viajou pelo Extremo Oriente entre Março e Julho de 1862. O título A Lady’s Visit to Manilla and Japan induz em erro, pois a narrativa começa em Singapura e termina em Hong Kong, mas a família visitou também Macau, Xangai, Nagasáqui, Yokohama, Xiamen (Hokkien) e Cantão, entre outros lugares, atestando assim o profundo desejo dos D’Almeida de explorar in loco todas as potencialidades dos países visitados Neste estudo tenciono demonstrar as complexidades que existem dentro de / entre as histórias, experiências e actividades interculturais de mulheres, e como estas alargam o âmbito do estudo dos sistemas sociais e culturais. Ao examinar as diferenças e semelhanças de género, podemos elaborar construções teóricas que analisam as variações entre mulheres; como elas são influenciadas pela classe, raça, etnia e religião; e como estas moldam a forma como entendemos a posição da mulher na cultura e na sociedade. O preconceito de classe da elite ocidental considera a mulher não-ocidental como sendo ‘a outra’, alguém que representa aquilo que o escritor ocasional não é. A questão da representação feminina das suas congéneres como ‘mulheres-outras’, com base numa ampla variedade de diferenças, é definitivamente um desafio para os estudos interculturais e de género.

Santos, ClaraA leitura da obra de Paul Auster, desde os primeiros poemas e ensaios até à mais recente ficção, revela uma constante reflexão metalinguística e metaficcional sobre o trabalho da escrita. Auster equaciona o problema da escrita enquanto acto, permitindo ao leitor acompanhar e participar desse processo de construção. A narrativa e a linguagem intelectualizam-se, tornam-se conscientes, o que possibilita uma aproximação privilegiada ao ensino da tradução de textos literários através da própria literatura. The Invention of Solitude é como uma arte poética inspirada na experiência efectiva do sujeito, enquanto escritor e tradutor. Podemos considerá-lo um romance-manifesto em duas partes (Portrait of an Invisible Man e The Book of Memory), com especial incidência na exploração analítica da cena da escrita, utilizando a personagem-escritor e suas vivências como cobaia neste processo de auto e heteroconhecimento. A partir da análise aplicada de The Invention of Solitude, este artigo irá remeter também para os ensaios de Ernest Gellner sobre Wittgenstein em Language and Solitude, entre outros escritores que se debruçaram igualmente sobre questões ligadas à tradução literária, como Dryden, Goethe, Nietzsche, Benjamin, Ortega y Gasset e Octávio Paz.
- Impressões de leitura: o poema do mar de Jorge BarbosaPublication . Santos, ClaraPoema do Mar dá voz ao ideal da ―terra-longe‖ e ao ―querer bipartido‖1 do poeta caboverdiano mais desencantado frente à terra-cretcheu, amada. Jorge Barbosa (1902-1971) foi, juntamente com Baltasar Lopes e Manuel Lopes, uma das figuras de proa da Claridade. O aparecimento desta revista, em 1936, define o moderno movimento cultural caboverdiano. Conscientes da sua unidade cultural, pretendiam os ―claridosos‖ romper em definitivo com a subalternidade que os cingia à temática europeia, libertando o acto criador de tão colonial alienação. Já em 1935, ao publicar o seu primeiro livro, Arquipélago, Jorge Barbosa vencera a tradicional dependência dos modelos metropolitanos e tornava-se pioneiro da moderna poesia caboverdiana.

Santos, ClaraNas três narrativas que constituem The New York Trilogy – City of Glass, Ghosts e The Locked Room – Paul Auster emprega e desconstrói os elementos convencionais do romance policial, elaborando uma investigação recorrente da natureza, função e significado da linguagem, mas também da solidão, do encerramento e da problemática da identidade. A produção narrativa de Auster evoca fantasmas logocêntricos tradicionais (como a presença, a realidade e a verdade), que fazem eco do princípio de indissolubilidade entre palavra e significado, apenas para lograr esta identidade através de uma orientação textual para a marcação da ficcionalidade e consequente reforço dos efeitos de significação ilusórios. Auster altera os mecanismos logrando as expectativas do leitor em relação ao epílogo e à transparência textual, que um pacto mimético faria pressupor. O espaço vazio resultante confere ao texto uma liberdade plurissignificativa que dispersa todas as certezas e veicula o poder da criação do caos. Sob a aparência de fluência narrativa, a escrita de Paul Auster esconde uma subversão das premissas básicas da literatura realista e dos signos referenciais, numa poética auto-reflexiva ficcionalizada sobre a estruturação de universos imaginários.
- Culture, politics and identity: critical readings on gender in southeast AsiaPublication . Santos, ClaraThis article discusses some critical readings of theoretical texts on gender in Southeast Asian countries, where the intersections of past and present, of the global and the local, capitalism, post-colonialism and post-modernism define the guidelines to explore the negotiation and evolution of gender concepts. Gender issues are located not only within structures of symbolic meaning, but also in relation to the historical and political forces that have marked a plurality of post-colonial contexts, where local notions about gender (in)equality and complementarity are constantly evolving. This article claims that the previously silenced narratives of non-Western women must be given a new role and status, in a modern transnational, interdisciplinary cultural grid. Narratives of everyday common life create spaces of empathy, and consequently, projects of action and research will be conducted in order to obtain concrete and useful results. However, many narratives of the everyday practice are actually stories of violence, a type of discourse generated by extreme poverty, substantial inequality and daily contact with terror. In addition, this article also analyses the role played by female characters in the building of the nation’s narrative, both in colonial and post-colonial times, with its enduring stereotypes, dichotomies and metaphors of power.
- Heading east this time: critical readings on gender in southeast AsiaPublication . Santos, ClaraThis essay intends to discuss some critical readings of fictional and theoretical texts on gender condition in Southeast Asian countries. Nowadays, many texts about women in Southeast Asia apply concepts of power in unusual areas. Traditional forms of gender hegemony have been replaced by other powerful, if somewhat more covert, forms. We will discuss some universal values concerning conventional female roles as well as the strategies used to recognize women in political fields traditionally characterized by male dominance. Female empowerment will mean different things at different times in history, as a result of culture, local geography and individual circumstances. Empowerment needs to be perceived as an individual attitude, but it also has to be facilitated at the macrolevel by society and the State. Gender is very much at the heart of all these dynamics, strongly related to specificities of historical, cultural, ethnic and class situatedness, requiring an interdisciplinary transnational approach.
- All the world in a boat: portuguese folklore, common sense and ideologyPublication . Santos, ClaraThis essay sees “through” an object produced by Portuguese folklore: the moliceiro boat of Ria de Aveiro, whose most original characteristic is the group of four different panels painted on each boat. These unique panels have echoed national mythologies and have undergone influence from institutional channels of instruction and propaganda for much of the twentieth century. We will analyse how this boat expresses the inventory of a community’s identity, imagination, and practices.
