- The power of the invisible beings: activities to raise awareness within children communitiesPublication . Lopes, Maria Inês Dias; Oliveira, Ana Catarina Caetano; Pinho, Catarina Vaz; Carvalho, Tiago Monteiro; Lamas, Maria Céu; Mota, Sandra; Amorim, ManuelaHealth promotion and education is especially important during childhood. Considering that children know the main hygiene care, but do not always have information regarding their importance, an intervention on this theme was carried out with a group of 10 children with an average age of 8 years, which aimed to motivate participants to perform hygiene acts. The activity was based on three sequential steps: introduction of fundamental concepts; exploration of the main groups of microorganisms and diseases; multiple choice games and crossword puzzles. During the session, attention and interest in the contents were notable, through the participation of the children. In the games, they demonstrated an excellent responsiveness and willingness to interact with all players. This intervention addressing various teaching-learning methodologies proved to be enriching and allowed the acquired transversal and specific skills to be acquired in several areas.
- Is there still space for pedagogical and technical-scientific creativity in higher education in health technologies?Publication . Tavares, Diana; Mota, Sandra; Amorim, ManuelaAfter pandemic period, it is urgent to create a facilitating means of internal cogitation and to identify creative strategies that can overcome the less positive aspects of distance learning. There is an increasingly constant problem - the lack of motivation and identity in the academic-scientific environment with a lack of proactivity and resistance of interaction with others. It is necessary to work with traditional teaching-learning methodologies and create out of the box grafts that are attractive and productive. This year we will implemented a set of strategies: clinical cases, health literacy training sessions, cultural tools, escape room and others. We will carry out a diagnostic assessment of knowledge, before and after the intervention; as well as an interview that will allow us to understand the personal evolution and the degree of satisfaction. In this phase, the intention is to share the methodological strategies in a constructive and enriching manner.
- Self-assessing Teachers’ Competences for Curricula Modernization Through MOOCsPublication . Mihaescu, Vlad; Butkiene, Rita; Andone, Diana; Aydin, Cengiz Hakan; Vaz de Carvalho, Carlos; Zubikova, Olga; Toprak, Elif; Genc-Kumtepe, Evrim; Brueggemann, Tim; Intveen, SonjaMassive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) paved the way for new instructional methods by and for academic early adopters, who shifted their traditional teaching in ways believed to improve the students experience and to provide more interactive learning opportunities. To analyze this impact in the education system, at different levels, we investigated the desired competencies of the academics who create, develop or integrate MOOCs in traditional higher education. For this purpose, a self-assessment tool for educators was created and this paper presents its pedagogical and technical design, its development and the main results from the first pilot evaluation with teachers from universities in different European countries.
- Inclusive higher education through e-learning in Israel and Georgia. Preliminary results from an ongoing projectPublication . Jesus, Ângelo; Araújo, André; Gonçalves, Maria JoãoHigher Education has seen growth across the world in recent decades. However, there are large asymmetries in terms of access, with specific countries/regions showing marked inequalities of opportunities, especially in population groups that are underrepresented due to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, disability, or origin geographic location. At the same time, access to the internet has become widespread and has proven its potential as a way of democratizing access to information. The Love.Dist@nce project was created to respond to the needs of Georgia and Israel, with input from European partners, with the aim of promoting inclusive education through distance learning. After 18 months of activity, the project is continuing its course and several reports and support materials have already been created that will serve as a basis for the implementation of pilot curricular units currently in progress, involving teachers, students, and non-teaching staff.
- Preventive medicine in pregnant women and newborns. Empowerment for better health indicators through community interventionPublication . Oliveira, Diana Silva; Válega, Inês de Carvalho da Silva; Vale, Gonçalo Luís de Albuquerque e; Azevedo, Catarina Silva; Lourenço, Inês de Melo; Lamas, Maria Céu; Mota, Sandra; Amorim, ManuelaIn health, the society empowerment is associated with increased levels of health literacy. Through more and better knowledge and skills, individuals can make decisions on health care, appropriate behaviours to prevent disease and promote health, improving health indicators. We developed a community intervention about Preventive Medicine (PM) aiming to inform and raise awareness about the importance of lifestyle and vaccination on their health, as well as on their babies. With the aim of transmitting the information in a clear and appealing way we used a PowerPoint in online format. It was created two questionnaires to use during the meeting: one before the presentation and another after, to assess the influence of the Webinar on the target audience’s opinion about PM. Most participants do not have a well-defined opinion about the importance of PM. However, after, it was found that they were more enlightened, being able to demystify some doubts and fears associated with the subject, particularly vaccination.
- Lithium–copper alloy embedded in 3D porous copper foam with enhanced electrochemical performance toward lithium metal batteriesPublication . Lu, Ziyu; Tai, Zhixin; Yu, Zhipeng; LaGrow, Alec P.; Bondarchuk, Oleksandr; Sousa, Juliana P.S.; Meng, Lijian; Peng, Zhijian; Liu, LifengSuppressing dendrite growth and accommodating volume change, among others, are the main challenges for lithium (Li) metal anode to be used in rechargeable Li batteries. The commercial macroporous copper (Cu) foam current collector may only tackle these challenges to a little extent, and it is usually unable to provide sufficient Li nucleation sites, leading to rapidly increased polarization and unstable cycling performance. Herein, we report a three-dimensional composite anode comprising Li–Cu alloy melt-cast on a commercial Cu foam (CF) current collector (Li–Cu/CF), which can be converted to a unique architecture consisting of Li metal supported by an interconnected CuLix alloy nanowire network formed because of the phase separation, when the molten Li–Cu alloy cools down and gets solidified. Compared to the bare Li foil, the Li–Cu/CF anode shows a smaller polarization and better cycle stability in the carbonate electrolyte at various current densities ranging from 1 to 5 mA/cm2 and is free from dendrite growth upon repeated Li plating/stripping. This can be attributed to the low Li nucleation overpotential and high Coulombic efficiency (96%) during Li plating on and stripping from the thus-obtained hierarchically structured CF collector, as well as the higher proportion of Li2O relative to LiF in the solid-electrolyte interphase layer. Moreover, when assembled in a full cell paired with the LiFePO4 cathode, the Li–Cu/CF anode also exhibits much better rate capability and cycle performance than the bare Li foil. Our work provides a new convenient approach to construct a dendrite-free Li metal anode that can be potentially deployed in the next-generation high energy density rechargeable Li batteries.
- Deep Reinforcement Learning for Persistent Cruise Control in UAV-aided Data CollectionPublication . Kurunathan, John Harrison; Li, Kai; Ni, Wei; Tovar, Eduardo; Dressler, FalkoAutonomous UAV cruising is gaining attention dueto its flexible deployment in remote sensing, surveillance, andreconnaissance. A critical challenge in data collection with theautonomous UAV is the buffer overflows at the ground sensorsand packet loss due to lossy airborne channels. Trajectoryplanning of the UAV is vital to alleviate buffer overflows as wellas channel fading. In this work, we propose a Deep DeterministicPolicy Gradient based Cruise Control (DDPG-CC) to reducethe overall packet loss through online training of headings andcruise velocity of the UAV, as well as the selection of the groundsensors for data collection. Preliminary performance evaluationdemonstrates that DDPG-CC reduces the packet loss rate byunder 5% when sufficient training is provided to the UAV.
