- Assessing statistical reasoning through project workPublication . Pimenta, RuiNew technologies involve a reformulation of contents and methodology used for teaching statistics. Developing students’ statistical reasoning becomes an important task for teachers of applied statistics. This is particularly true in the field of health sciences. In this work the statistical reasoning ability acquired by health sciences students was evaluated in the context of their final undergraduate project.
- iiBOARD - Development of a low-cost interactive whiteboard using the wiimote controllerPublication . Silva, Marco; Reis, Luís Paulo; Sousa, Armando; Faria, Brígida Mónica; Costa, A. PedroInteractive whiteboards are gaining importance in our society, both at a business level and, especially, at an educational level. However, the products offered by the major manufacturers have a major barrier to their acquisition: very high prices. There is an urgent need to use new technologies in order to provide solutions that present the same performance levels than typical interactive whiteboards, but with a significantly reduced cost. Throughout this paper the steps taken for the development of an innovative low-cost interactive whiteboard are described. The proposed system is based on the Wii Remote command of the Nintendo Wii video-game console. This command, although very inexpensive has an infrared camera, and supports Bluetooth communication. The system control is based on a wireless device, based on infrared emitters, which supports most of the mouse events. A complete whiteboard application was also developed using Borland Delphi for Windows. This application may be used with either one or two Wiimotes and has a very simple and efficient calibration method. The application also includes viewing capabilities of some of the Wiimote characteristics, as well as a flexible Notebook to increase its range of possible uses. The results obtained through a survey conducted to a small set of whiteboard users were very positive indicators about the acceptance of the inexpensive solution proposed.
- Data visualization for analyzing simulated robotic soccer gamesPublication . Faria, Brigida Monica; Santos, Beatriz Sousa; Lau, Nuno; Reis, Luis PauloRoboCup is an international cooperative research project aimed at promoting research in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. It includes a simulation league where two teams of 11 players compete in a robotic soccer game very similar to real soccer. Teams exhibit very complex strategies in these games that are very difficult to analyze by conventional observation methods. This paper presents an approach to the visualization of simulated robotic soccer games using the RapidMiner software package. Various visualizations were developed using Andrew´s Curves, Survey Plots, several types of Parallel Coordinate visualizations and Radial Coordinate Visualizations. These visualizations enabled to take some interesting conclusions about the differences between games of FC Portugal robotic soccer team using different formations and against distinct opponents.
- The use of statistics in real and simulated investigations performed by undergraduate health sciences' studentsPublication . Pimenta, Rui; Nascimento, Ana Paula; Vieira, Margarida; Costa, ElísioIn previous works, we evaluated the statistical reasoning ability acquired by health sciences’ students carrying out their final undergraduate project. We found that these students achieved a good level of statistical literacy and reasoning in descriptive statistics. However, concerning inferential statistics the students did not reach a similar level. Statistics educators therefore claim for more effective ways to learn statistics such as project based investigations. These can be simulated, based on previously supplied data, or real, based on data collected by the students themselves. In this work, we intend to evaluate and compare the statistical reasoning and thinking ability acquired by health sciences’ students when conducting both real and simulated investigations.
- Machine Learning algorithms applied to the classification of robotic soccer formations and opponent teamsPublication . Faria, Brígida Mónica; Reis, Luís Paulo; Lau, Nuno; Castillo, GladysMachine Learning (ML) and Knowledge Discovery (KD) are research areas with several different applications but that share a common objective of acquiring more and new information from data. This paper presents an application of several ML techniques in the identification of the opponent team and also on the classification of robotic soccer formations in the context of RoboCup international robotic soccer competition. RoboCup international project includes several distinct leagues were teams composed by different types of real or simulated robots play soccer games following a set of pre-established rules. The simulated 2D league uses simulated robots encouraging research on artificial intelligence methodologies like high-level coordination and machine learning techniques. The experimental tests performed, using four distinct datasets, enabled us to conclude that the Support Vector Machines (SVM) technique has higher accuracy than the k-Nearest Neighbor, Neural Networks and Kernel Naïve Bayes in terms of adaptation to a new kind of data. Also, the experimental results enable to conclude that using the Principal Component Analysis SVM achieves worse results than using simpler methods that have as primary assumption the distance between samples, like k-NN.
- Data analysis of three procedures for constructing semiconductors: Mold, Solder Ball and SingulationPublication . Faria, Brígida Mónica; Faria, Brígida MónicaSemiconductor's production is a complex process that involves several sequential steps until obtaining the final product. Team and machine fault detection and performance analysis, in the manufacturing process, are essential to the success of a company in this field. This paper presents the results obtained by applying multivariate statistical methods to data on three processes of the production line of a semiconductor company: Molding, Solder Ball Attach and Singulation. From the analysis of the real data it can be concluded that there are statistical differences regarding the performance, concerning the time taken and number of faults, of the four teams that operate on the company analyzed.
- A methodology for creating intelligent wheelchair users´s profilesPublication . Brígida Mónica Faria; Vasconcelos, Sérgio; Reis, Luís Paulo; Lau, NunoIntelligent Wheelchair (IW) is a new concept aiming to allow higher autonomy to people with lower mobility such as disabled or elderly individuals. Some of the more recent IWs have a multimodal interface, enabling multiple command modes such as joystick, voice commands, head movements, or even facial expressions. In these IW it may be very useful to provide the user with the best way of driving it through an adaptive interface. This paper describes the foundations for creating a simple methodology for extracting user profiles, which can be used to adequately select the best IW command mode for each user. The methodology is based on an interactive wizard composed by a flexible set of simple tasks presented to the user, and a method for extracting and analyzing the user’s execution of those tasks. The results achieved showed that it is possible to extract simple user profiles, using the proposed method. Thus, the approach may be further used to extract more complete user profiles, just by extending the set of tasks used, enabling the adaptation of the IW interface to each user’s characteristics.
