- B Corp versus ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications: Aligned, or alternative paths, towards sustainable development?Publication . Fonseca, Luís; Silva, Vitor; Sá, José Carlos; Lima, Vanda; Santos, Gilberto; Silva, RuiCorporate social responsibility (CSR) emerged to deliver sustainable economic, environmental, and social value to organization's extended stakeholders and society in general. This study investigates the similarities, differences, and relationships between B Corp, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 certifications and is supported by a mixed research methodology and a sample of 701 B Corp companies certified between January 2020 and March 2021. The results indicate that ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certified B Corp companies have statistically higher scores for the Environment dimension but are inconclusive, or even contradictory, for the other BIA (B Impact Assessment) dimensions. Differences in size, activity sector and geographical location are discussed. It is shown that both B Corp, ISO 9001 and 14001 certified companies, guided by different missions and business models, contribute, at different levels, towards CSR and sustainable development goals.

- Preprocessing of magnetic resonance images with multiple Sclerosis lesionsPublication . Pinto, Rafaela; Ventura, Sandra Rua; Silva, Vitor; Tavares, Manuel R.S.According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that multiple sclerosis (MS) affects around 2.5 million people worldwide and more than 5000 in Portugal. Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory, demyelinating, idiopathic, and often disabling central nervous system disease that affects the white matter diagnosed in young adults and predominantly affects womens. Multiple sclerosis is the most common neurological disorder with unexplained causes and major repercussions in the lives of patients, causing the active search for answers by the researchers. Although the disease cannot be cured or prevented at this time, the available treatments only reduce its severity and delay its progression. In recent years, there has been a major development of image processing and analysis techniques in order to facilitate early diagnosis and suitable treatment. In general, images acquired by imaging devices and specialized techniques require transformations and enhancements to make them more suitable in order to extract as much information as desired with greater efficiency. Several authors, have described techniques of image preprocessing and segmentation of MS lesions, making evident the advantages of such computational tools. In this work, different preprocessing algorithms were applied in order to perform the brain extraction from resonance magnetic (RM) images for their easier further analysis.
- School-based practices of occupational therapists for an inclusive education in PortugalPublication . Silveira-Maia, Mónica; Alves, Silvia; Trigueiro, Maria João; Faias, Joaquim; Silva, VitorThe present study is part of a project that aims to develop a common framework defining general requirements – in terms of skills, contents and methods – to be considered on occupational therapists (OT)’ training for school-based practices aligned with the principles of inclusion. Although the concept of inclusive education has been, consensually, defined as the enablement of school contexts to support the access, participation and progression of all students - considering a wide spectrum of learning and functioning profiles -, the bridging of that conception and the field of practices has been subject to different understandings (e.g., Amor et al., 2019). Within school-based OT such praxeological divergences can be recognized in terms of the prominence assigned to in-class vs pull-out services; to child-direct vs consultation practices; and/or rehabilitation vs participation-centered approaches (e.g., Kaelin et al., 2019). In Portugal, there is around 90 Inclusive Resource Centers – IRC (DGE, 2019), which general goal is to mobilize specialized human resources – including the OT – to incorporate multidisciplinary teams at schools (along with regular and special education teachers, psychologists, principals, parents) promoting the process of inclusion of children in need of additional supports.
- Wii-based exercise program to improve physical fitness, motor proficiency and functional mobility in adults with Down syndromePublication . Silva, Vitor; Campos, C.; Sá, A.; Cavadas, M.; Pinto, J.; Simões, P.; Machado, S.; Murillo-Rodríguez, E.; Rocha, NunoPeople with Down syndrome (DS) usually display reduced physical fitness (aerobic capacity, muscle strength and abnormal body composition), motor proficiency impairments (balance and postural control) and physical functional limitations. Exergames can be an appealing alternative to enhance exercise engagement and compliance, whilst improving physical fitness and motor function. This study aims to analyse the effects of a Wii-based exercise program on physical fitness, functional mobility and motor proficiency of adults with DS.
