- Brazilian coaches' role in facilitating positive development through university sportPublication . Gaion, Patricia; Gobbi, Vinicius; Lima, Rhuan; Trindade, Ana; Rathwell, Scott; Santos, FernandoIn recent years, the role of coaches in fostering Positive Development (PD) has been explored within the context of university sport. However, research in non-English speaking countries such as Brazil, which is highly representative of university sport in Latin America, is still scarce. The purpose of this study was to analyze Brazilian coaches' perceptions of their role in facilitating PD within university sport. In total, 16 university coaches from all regions of Brazil were interviewed (14 male and 2 female). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Findings showed that coaches perceived university sport as a conducive platform for fostering both performance and PD outcomes. However, the coaches found it difficult to articulate PD strategies and identified challenges such as lack of time and organizational support. The present study suggests that PD is not well integrated within the current model of university sport in Brazil and highlights a potential need for PD-focused coach education programs.
- Coaching effectiveness within competitive youth football: youth football coaches’ and athletes’ perceptions and practicesPublication . Santos, Fernando; Corte-Real, Nuno; Regueiras, Leonor; Dias, Cláudia; Martinek, Thomas J.; Fonseca, AntónioCompetitive youth sport can provide solid grounds for positive youth development (PYD). However, there is need to understand if coaches are facilitating these types of outcomes. The purpose of this study was to analyze how competitive youth sport is used to facilitate PYD. The participants in this study were four youth football coaches and 19 adolescent athletes from competitive leagues at north of Portugal. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field notes and nonparticipant observations. The majority of the coaches communicated appropriately and facilitated positive interactions with youth athletes. Nevertheless, the participants did not implement an explicit approach towards the development of confidence, character, connection and competence (i.e., 4 C’s) which has been linked to less PYD outcomes. Performance outcomes in certain moments superseded PYD ones. Moving forward, coaches need to comprehend how they can use their interpersonal knowledge to integrate the 4 C’s within competitive youth sport.
- Examining Portuguese High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Physical EducationPublication . Pereira, Paulo; Santos, Fernando; Marinho, Daniel A.Portugal ranks fourth among countries with the highest rate of overweight population, considering that 67.6% of the Portuguese population over the age of 15 is overweight or obese. To our knowledge, limited studies have investigated students' attitudes toward physical education in Portugal. Such research is necessary because it can provide valuable insights for policy and application in the curriculum development for physical education, which may eventually increase participation in physical and sports activities. This study analyzed students' attitudes toward physical education (PE) according to sociodemographic variables, including grade level, socioeconomic status, and gender, and their participation in extracurricular sports activities and respective PE grades. The sample comprised 476 high school students (from the 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade levels) from five public schools located in Portugal. The Students' Attitudes toward Physical Education Questionnaire was adapted and validated for use with Portuguese students as a two-factor model. Findings show that students generally have a moderately positive attitude toward PE. However, students' positive attitudes tend to decrease throughout high school, which is particularly significant in the 9th grade. Furthermore, students' attitudes are influenced by gender, extracurricular sports practice, and grades. These findings may help stakeholders reflect on how to frame PE in a more meaningful way to create a solid foundation for maintaining an active lifestyle throughout life. Implications for further research and practice are discussed.
- Exploring the Impact of a TPSR Program on Transference of Responsibility Goals within a Preschool Setting: An Action Research StudyPublication . Santos, Fernando; Miguel, Jacinta; Wright, Paul M.; Sá, Cesar; Saraiva, LindaThe teaching personal and social responsibility (TPSR) model has been extensively used in a vast array of settings. However, few TPSR studies have focused on preschool settings. The purpose of this action research study was to analyze the experiences of a program leader, her preschool children, and their parents throughout a TPSR program focused on transference of responsibility model goals. The participants were 25 preschool children, six parents, and a program leader involved in a preschool setting located in the north of Portugal. Data were collected through reflexive journaling, participant observations, semi-structured interviews, and focus group interviews. Findings suggest the TPSR model could be a useful instructional model for preschool teachers focused on providing social and emotional learning opportunities to their students. In order to foster transference, parents played a pivotal role in this process and were included in the intervention, which appeared to enhance life skill transfer.
- Facilitating Positive Youth Development through Competitive Youth Sport: Opportunities and StrategiesPublication . Santos, Fernando; Martinek, Thomas J.
- How to promote positive youth development in physical education? The experiences of a 5 physical educator and students through the delivery of Project SCORE!Publication . Santos, FernandoConfidence, character, competence and connection have been acknowledged as desired characteristics of positive youth development (PYD)-based programs titled the C's. Based on the 4 C's framework, an online tool called Project SCORE! has been designed to help coaches and parents, or other stakeholders facilitate PYD through a specific set of strategies, objectives and activities. However, research on PYD-focused teacher education programs, specifically using Project SCORE! is still scarce. The purpose of this case study was to analyze the influence of a PYD-focused intervention based on Project SCORE! on a physical education (PE) teacher's and his students' PYD behaviors. The participants were a PE teacher with extensive teaching and coaching experience and seven students involved in this participants' PE class. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, nonparticipant observations, reflexive journaling and focus group interviews. Findings showed how the PE teacher was able to transition from an unintentional approach towards PYD to an intentional one which resulted in more PYD outcomes reported by his students after the PYD-focused intervention based on Project SCORE!. In addition, his coaching experience have him an unique outlook on how to develop a PYD mandate in PE. Future research should focus on implementing Project SCORE! in a broad array of contexts and understand how parents may be involved in this online platform.
- Implementing the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility Model within Preschool Education: Strengths, Challenges and StrategiesPublication . Santos, FernandoThe teaching personal and social responsibility (TPSR) model has been considered a valuable tool for children to reach their full potential in life. However, little research has been conducted with the TPSR model in preschool contexts. The purpose of the present study was to understand the experiences of a program leader while implementing a TPSR-based program within a preschool setting. The participants were 24 children with five years of age attending a school located in the north of Portugal, and the program leader. Data sources included reflexive journaling, field notes and participant observations. Findings suggest the TPSR model could be adapted and implemented with preschool children. However, there is a need to consider specific adaptations to develop TPSR-based interventions and facilitate responsibility outcomes. This study provided a novel understanding of how TPSR may be implemented in a preschool context to foster social and emotional learning and enhance school readiness.
