- Architecture of a maturity model for information systems in higher education institutions: multiple case study for dimensions identificationPublication . Pereira, Rui Humberto; Vidal De Carvalho, Joao; Rocha, ÁlvaroHigher education institutions (HEIs) are complex and dynamic organizations in terms of information management, forcing their information systems to respond to enormous challenges and threats. In order to evaluate the HEIs’ information systems, we propose the development of a maturity model capable of supporting the role of HEI’s managers, as well as accreditation agencies, in the assessment of the maturity of these systems, thus, promoting continuous improvement. In this paper, we present and discuss our proposal for an architecture of the maturity model being developed. This one is based on a two-dimensional architecture composed of vertical and horizontal dimensions. We selected a multi-case study approach, based on five Portuguese HEIs, and reviewed the literature to identify the dimensions. This case study was supported by interviews with experts from the selected HEI. The results of this research work were both encouraging and promising amongst the interviewed experts, revealing a high level of acceptance of the general model architecture, as well as positive expectations about its usefulness in the future. The development of our maturity model is carried out by following a formal methodology specially designed to support the construction of this type of model.

Ambos os grupos salientaram a importância da comunicação entre a Escola e a Família e manifestaram interesse na CE, enquanto instrumento de comunicação bidirecional.
- A clinical support system based on quality of life estimationPublication . Faria, Brigida Monica; Gonçalves, Joaquim; Reis, Luis Paulo; Rocha, ÁlvaroQuality of life is a concept influenced by social, economic, psychological, spiritual or medical state factors. More specifically, the perceived quality of an individual's daily life is an assessment of their well-being or lack of it. In this context, information technologies may help on the management of services for healthcare of chronic patients such as estimating the patient quality of life and helping the medical staff to take appropriate measures to increase each patient quality of life. This paper describes a Quality of Life estimation system developed using information technologies and the application of data mining algorithms to access the information of clinical data of patients with cancer from Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck services of an oncology institution. The system was evaluated with a sample composed of 3013 patients. The results achieved show that there are variables that may be significant predictors for the Quality of Life of the patient: years of smoking (p value 0.049) and size of the tumor (p value < 0.001). In order to assign the variables to the classification of the quality of life the best accuracy was obtained by applying the John Platt's sequential minimal optimization algorithm for training a support vector classifier. In conclusion data mining techniques allow having access to patients additional information helping the physicians to be able to know the quality of life and produce a well-informed clinical decision.
- Data Mining and decision support systems for clinical application and quality of lifePublication . Ferreira, Mário; Reis, Luís Paulo; Faria, Brígida Mónica; Goncalves, Joaquim; Rocha, ÁlvaroThe development of new technologies, information systems, decision support systems and clinical parameters prediction algorithms using machine learning and data mining, opens a new outlook in many areas of health. In this context, the concept of Quality of Life (QOL) has relevance in health and the possibility of integrate this measure in developing systems Decision Support Clinic (SADC). Through individual expectation of physical well-being, psychological, mental, emotional and spiritual patient, clinical variables and quality of life assessment, we intend to make a study of data to establish correlations with clinical data and pharmaceutical data, socio-economic factors, among others, for obtaining knowledge in terms of behavioral patterns of chronically ill, reaching a number of reliable data and easily accessible, capable of enhancing the decision-making process on the part of specialist medical teams, seeking to improve treatments and consequently the quality of life related to health chronically ill. This paper studied and compared related studies that develop systems for decision support and prediction in the clinical area, with emphasis on studies in the area of quality of life.

- Development and validation of a health and work survey based on the rasch model among portuguese WorkersPublication . Barros, Carla; Cunha, Liliana; Baylina, Pilar; Oliveira, Alexandra; Rocha, ÁlvaroThe purpose of this study was to develop the Health and Work Survey (INSAT) and examine the validity of the discomfort rating scale. Data were collected from 706 Portuguese workers from six economic sectors with the support of the Health and Work Survey (INSAT - Inquérito Saúde e Trabalho). The INSAT is a self-administered questionnaire to assessing working conditions, health and wellbeing, and to provide information to the occupational health systems in the organisations. For the survey instrument validation, the Rasch Partial Credit Model (PCM) was used to analyse item fit statistics. From the application of PCM, Person Separation Reliability was obtained (0.8761) and the value can be considered very good (>0.8). From the statistical analysis, the Overall Model fit information, given by Outfit Mean square/Infit Mean square, is between 0.5 and 1.5, meaning "Productive for measurement" and "acceptable fit overall". The INSAT items can generate predictable response patterns. We recommend that the INSAT discomfort rating scale and some other items should be reviewed in future works. In any event, this tool proves to be useful in assessing the relationship between work and health and in evaluating key main risk factors, helping to prevent problems and improving occupational health systems.
- Development methodology of a higher education institutions maturity modelPublication . Vidal de Carvalho, Joao; Pereira, Rui Humberto; Rocha, ÁlvaroMaturity models have been introduced, over the last four decades, as guides and references for Information System (IS) management in organizations from different sectors of activity. In the educational field, maturity models have also been used to deal with the enormous complexity and demand of Educational Information Systems. This article presents a research project that aims to develop a new comprehensive maturity model for the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) area. The HEIMM (Higher Education Institutions Maturity Model) will be developed to help HEI to address the complexity of there IS, as a useful tool for the demanding role of the management of these systems, and institutions as well. The HEIMM will have the peculiarity of congregating a set of key maturity influence factors and respective characteristics, enabling not only the assessment of the global maturity of the HEI IS but also the individual maturity of its different dimensions. In this article, we present the second phase of our project by discussing the methodology for the development of maturity models that will be adopted for the design of the HEIMM and the underlying reasons for its choice.
