- A decision support approach to automatic timetabling in higher education institutionsPublication . Fernandes, Pedro; Pereira, Carla; Barbosa, ArmandoAt a time when the need to reduce costs has become part of the day-to-day reality of all educational institutions, it is unthinkable to continue to manually perform those tasks (i.e., the creation of timetables) that can be automated and optimized. The automatic creation of timetables for educational institutions is one of the most studied problems by the scientific community. However, almost all studies have been based on very simplified models of reality that have no practical application. A realistic model of the problem, robust algorithms that are able to find valid solutions in highly restricted environments, and optimization methods that are able to quickly provide quality results are key factors to consider when attempting to solve this (real) problem faced by educational institutions. This paper presents a summary of the work performed by Bullet Solutions over the last few years, from the first stage of understanding and modelling the problem to the final analysis of the results obtained using the developed software under real conditions.
- How Knowledge Acquisition Diversity Affects Innovation Performance during the Technological Catch-Up in Emerging Economies: A Moderated Inverse U-Shape RelationshipPublication . Li, Qiang; Guo, Jing-Jing; Liu, Wei; Yue, Xiao-Guang; Duarte, Nelson; Pereira, CarlaMany domestic enterprises in emerging economies are concerned with the question of how to better utilize the portfolio of technology sourcing channels to achieve rapid economic growth by technological innovation. This paper looks at this issue by exploring the impacts of knowledge acquisition diversity (KAD) on innovation performance of domestic enterprises in China and the technological contexts (in terms of technology gap and technology development speed) under which KAD is most likely to contribute. Using panel data of the manufacturing industry in China over the 2001–2009 period, the results show that KAD has an inverse U-shaped relationship with innovation performance in terms of both product-related innovation performance (NPS) and knowledge-related innovation performance (PAT). Specifically, it reveals that the capability to generate technological innovation over time is dependent on how domestic enterprises manage their portfolio of knowledge sourcing channels to learn from foreign enterprises. Moreover, it is shown that the technology gap significantly moderates the inverted U-shaped relationship between KAD and both NPS and PAT. Technology development speed has a moderating effect on the inverted U-shaped relationship between KAD and innovation only in terms of NPS. The results of this study can help us to understand the relationships among technological contexts, KAD and innovation performance of domestic enterprises in emerging countries.
- A New Approach to Monitoring Touristic and Cultural Routes: The Challenge of Development and Use of Indicators-Based SystemsPublication . Duarte, Nelson; Pereira, Carla; Ribeiro, Albano; Cardoso, SolangeThe present paper results of an ongoing research project were it is expected to develop an information system to monitoring a cultural-touristic route. The route to monitor is the Romanesque Route of Tâmega. This Route is composed of 58 monuments located in the region of Tâmega in the North of Portugal. Due to the particular location of this region, that is between coastal zone, but not yet in the inland, it has a weak political influence, and it is reflected in the low levels of development at several levels, observed. The Romanesque Route was implemented in a part of this region in 1998, and enlarged to the all-region in 2010. In order to evaluate the socio-ecomonic impact of this route in the region a research project is being developed. The main goal of this paper is to open a discussion on the elements that must be taken into consideration to evaluate the economic and social impact of a touristic cultural route within a region and this one in particular.
- Supporting conceptualisation processes in collaborative networks: a case study on an R&D projectPublication . Pereira, Carla; Sousa, Cristóvão; Soares, AntónioThe development of new products or processes involves the creation, re-creation and integration of conceptual models from the related scientific and technical domains. Particularly, in the context of collaborative networks of organisations (CNO) (e.g. a multi-partner, international project) such developments can be seriously hindered by conceptual misunderstandings and misalignments, resulting from participants with different backgrounds or organisational cultures, for example. The research described in this article addresses this problem by proposing a method and the tools to support the collaborative development of shared conceptualisations in the context of a collaborative network of organisations. The theoretical model is based on a socio-semantic perspective, while the method is inspired by the conceptual integration theory from the cognitive semantics field. The modelling environment is built upon a semantic wiki platform. The majority of the article is devoted to developing an informal ontology in the context of a European R&D project, studied using action research. The case study results validated the logical structure of the method and showed the utility of the method.
- Understanding users’ response to ontology based systems in the context of an enterprise sponsored virtual communityPublication . Pereira, Carla; Moreira Silva, Manuel; Castro Fernandes, Joana; Lucas Soares, AntónioThis paper aims at presenting the preliminary results of a research work that seeks to understand the users' response to semantic based technologies, in the context o/, enterprise sponsored virtual communities. The research follows a qualitative methodolog}' based on an action research approach. It particlllar~v focuses on the socio-cognitive processes that underlie usel:~' learning and acquisition methods when training and interacting with a new knowledge management approach based on semantically enabled technologies in a collaborative, and sometimes virtual. learning/working environment. The outcomes of this research are expected to provide an assessment frameworkfor a deeper level understanding of the cognition process in what concerns the evolution of individual~~ knowledge. opinions. beliefs. and thoughts abuut untology based systems.
- Worker 4.0: A textile exoskeleton to support apparel industryPublication . Oliveira, João; Costa, Luani; Ramôa, Ana; Silva, Ricardo; Fertuzinhos, Aureliano; Estudante, Inês; Pinheiro, João; Vale, Bruno; Pilastri, André; Dias, Paula; Matta, Arthur; Sampaio, Rosane; Machado, Dário; Cortez, Paulo; Costa, Marta; Roças, Ana; Madureira, Pedro; Moreira, Juliana; Pereira, João Rui; Pereira, Carla; Bruno, FernandoSTVgoDigital project aims the transition of the textile and apparel industries to the new Industry 4.0 paradigm promoting the digitalization to increase productivity and efficiency of the entire value chain. Specifically, the PPS4 Worker 4.0 aims to develop an exoskeleton solution based on sensing and active components within a garment to support sewing operation movements that may cause injuries and/or pain in sewing machine workers. Seamstresses’ work requires physical efforts related to poor posture and repetitive tasks that increase the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders. In a general context, in industrial environments have been implemented lower and upper limb devices empowered for human ergonomic improvement, due to the high prevalence of postural complaints and consequently pain. With this, much has been developed in the realm of exoskeletons and artificial muscles aimed at various situations. To achieve the objectives of developing an exoskeleton that integrates a sensing component that monitors workers’ movements in real-time, identifying its ergonomic posture, feeds the actuation component, and uses machine learning algorithms to predict future ergonomic risks in a wearable, light, and flexible garment to support the execution of movements inherent to some professional activities, this research was based on an ergonomic risk assessment and definition of performance parameters, the definition of the architecture system and the wearable garment, and in the construction of prototypes and analysis in a laboratory environment with seamstress’ volunteers.
